✏Zeitoun Book Summary : In August, 2005, as Hurricane Katrina blew in, the city of New Orleans had been abandoned by most citizens. But resident Abdulrahman Zeitoun, though his wife and family had gone, refused to leave. For days he traversed an apocalyptic landscape of flooded streets by canoe. He protected neighbours' properties, fed trapped dogs and rescued survivors. But eventually he came to the attention of those 'guarding' this drowned city. Only then did Zeitoun's nightmare really begin. Zeitoun is the powerful, ultimately uplifting true story of one man's courage when confronted with an awesome force of nature followed by more troubling human oppression.

✏Quicklet on Dave Eggers s Zeitoun CliffNotes like Summary Analysis and Review Book Summary : Quicklets: Your Reading Sidekick! ABOUT THE BOOK Zeitoun is both a a scathing condemnation of Bush-era policies and the egregious mishandling of the Hurricane Katrina recovery and a story of one familys undying faith and strength in the face of disaster. Abdulrahman Zeitoun known simply as Zeitoun is a prosperous Syrian-American in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hits in 2005. Although his wife, Kathy, and their four children evacuate before the storm hits, Zeitoun stays behind to care for their house, business, and rental properties. When he awakens the day after the hurricane hit to see an ocean of clear blue water covering much of his neighborhood, Zeitoun realizes that the levees have been breached. Instead of immediately seeking evacuation, he stays in the city to help his stranded neighbors. Paddling around in an old canoe, Zeitoun pulls the elderly from the water, delivers food and water, and transports people to evacuation sites. In return, he is arrested and incarcerated, first in a Guantanamo-like compound and then in a maximum security prison. He is never read his rights. He is never given a phone call. He is called a terrorist and treated like an animal. MEET THE AUTHOR Lacey is a writer, traveler and lover of the arts. After graduating from the University of Virginia with a BA in Drama & the Studies of Women and Gender, the only thing she knew for sure was that she wanted to travel. So, she embarked on a 10 12 month round-the-world trip. Lacey then traveled to Costa Rica where she spent one year teaching elementary school English in a small mountain town. Throughout her two years of travels, she has always kept a blog. EXCERPT FROM THE BOOK On August 25, 2005, the balmy New Orleans day starts out like it always does for the Zeitoun family with a constantly ringing phone and the bustle of getting the kids off to school on time. As he pulls out to attend to the needs of his painting contractor business, Abdulrahman Zeitoun is not even thinking of the tropical storm off the coast of Florida. As Kathy savores half an hour of solitude after dropping her four children off at school, the storm is just a tiny nagging worry in the back of her mind. Abdulrahman Zeitoun was born in Jableh, Syria, but spent most of his early adult life working on ships all over the world before settling down in New Orleans. Finding that his first name was difficult for Americans to pronounce, his new country and adopted home came to know him simply as Zeitoun. Zeitouns wife, Kathy, was born in Baton Rouge to a large Christian family. After a tough divorce that essentially left her a single mother in her early twenties, she converted to Islam. ✏X Ray Lasers 2012 Book Summary : These proceedings comprise of invited and contributed papers presented at the 13th International Conference on X-Ray Lasers (ICXRL 2012) which was held 11–15 June 2012 in Paris, France, in the famous Quartier Latin, inside the historical Center of Cordeliers. This conference is part of a continuing series dedicated to recent developments and applications of x-ray lasers and other coherent x-ray sources with attention to supporting technologies and instrumentation. New results in the generation of intense coherent x-rays and progress towards practical devices and their applications are reported in these proceedings, including areas of research in plasma-based x-ray lasers, 4th generation accelerator-based sources and higher harmonic generation. Recent achievements related to the increase of the repetition rate up to 100 Hz and shorter wavelength collisional plasma-based soft x-ray lasers down to about 7 nm are presented. Seeding the amplifying plasma with a femtosecond high-order harmonic of infrared laser was foreseen as the required breakthrough to break the picosecond frontier. Numerical simulations based on the Maxwell-Bloch model are presented in these proceedings, transposing the chirped pulse amplification technique to the x-ray domain in order to increase the time over which the femtosecond seed can be amplified. These proceedings also include innovative applications of soft x–ray lasers based on techniques and diagnostics relevant to topical domains such as EUV lithography, inertial confinement fusion, or warm dense matter physics.

✏Real Ghosts Restless Spirits and Haunted Places Book Summary : The culmination of Brad Steiger’s 50 years of paranormal research, this book is a bold telling of true ghost stories and firstperson encounters with the supernatural. Arranged topically, it covers every sort of ghost and haunting: poltergeists, shadow beings, and phantoms alongside haunted apartments, hotels, and trains. From ghosts that still haunt Ohio’s State Reformatory, otherwise known as Shawshank, to Abe Lincoln’s regular consultation with mediums, this compendium delves into the true scary stories from both historical documents and personal accounts. In its 30 chapters, spirits represented include the good (“Ghosts that Saved Lives”), the bad (“Invisible Home Wreckers”), and the ugly (“Demonic Spirits That Whisper Commands to Kill”). The book goes on to unearth the ghastly goingson and macabre manifestations at haunted places such as museums, churches, graveyards, restaurants, and sacred sites while also instructing how to perform a cleansing ritual to rid a home of unwanted spectral visitors. This second edition is updated to include new stories and compelling evidence of both the existence of ghosts and proof of hauntings that will entertain, induce chills, and make the doubtful believe.

✏Water Security Book Summary : The purpose of this book is to present an overview of the latest research, policy, practitioner, academic and international thinking on water security—an issue that, like water governance a few years ago, has developed much policy awareness and momentum with a wide range of stakeholders. As a concept it is open to multiple interpretations, and the authors here set out the various approaches to the topic from different perspectives. Key themes addressed include: Water security as a foreign policy issue The interconnected variables of water, food, and human security Dimensions other than military and international relations concerns around water security Water security theory and methods, tools and audits. The book is loosely based on a masters level degree plus a short professional course on water security both given at the University of East Anglia, delivered by international authorities on their subjects. It should serve as an introductory textbook as well as be of value to professionals, NGOs, and policy-makers.
