✏Understanding the Historical Books of the Old Testament Book Summary : This book combines a careful study of the subject matter and the literary form of each of the historical books of the Old Testament and at the same time explains why this literature should be of great interest to Christian and Jewish believers today. The study is text based, carefully examining the wording of selected pericopes and following up with reflections on the theological significance of the texts. Its focus is twofold. First, it is a study of the history of Israel through a critical examination of the biblical sources attempting to see the events through the eyes of the authors/editors and to understand the religious and national filters through which they saw those events. Secondly, it is also a study of the faith of Israel expressed in these writings in an attempt to reflect on the major patterns and themes expressed and presupposed in the narratives. Special attention is given to the stories of the prophets in these books. This book examines the biblical books in four groups: 1) the Deuteronomist history extending from Joshua to 2 Kings, 2) the Chroniclers¿ or priestly history extending from 1 Chronicles to Nehemiah, 3) the Maccabean story looking and 1 and 2 Maccabees from the Greek Bible, and 4) the midrashic accounts including Ruth, Esther, Judith, Esther, and Tobit. Numerous maps and diagrams assist the reader to follow the geographical references in the texts as well as complicated family lines and sequences of kings. An index assists in finding specific names and events.

✏Understanding Old Testament Theology Book Summary : Over the past century the field of Old Testament studies has seen an explosion of theologies of the Old Testament, a trend that has only intensified in the past ten or twenty years. This proliferation of literature has made it difficult for students, pastors, laity--and even scholars--to keep up with. In Understanding Old Testament Theology, professors Brittany Kim and Charlie Trimm clearly organize and explain the myriad contemporary approaches to Old Testament theology. The book begins by highlighting the flash points that have produced such a wide range of Old Testament theologies and presents a brief history of the discipline. It then explores various approaches to Old Testament theology in seven chapters, divided into three parts. Part I examines approaches that ground Old Testament theology in history. Part II surveys approaches that foreground Old Testament theme(s). Finally, Part III considers approaches that highlight different contexts for doing Old Testament theology. Each main chapter describes both common features of the approach and points of tension and then offers a test case illuminating how it has been applied to the book of Exodus. Accessible and unique, Understanding Old Testament Theology provides the only summary introduction of its kind to the field of Old Testament biblical theology.

✏Knowing Jesus Through the Old Testament Book Summary : We cannot know Jesus without knowing his story. And that story began long before Jesus was born in Bethlehem. The Gospels tell us clearly that Jesus himself, along with his earliest followers, understood who he was and what he came to do in the light of the story of Israel as told in the pages of the Old Testament. Like them, we too will find that our own understanding of both Jesus and the Old Testament is transformed as we see each in the light of the other. Engaging with the Scriptures, Christopher J. H. Wright uncovers Jesus’ self- understanding as Son of Man and Son of God, following the path and fulfilling the call that God had placed before Israel. Through this we discover that the deeper we go into understanding the Old Testament, the closer we come to the heart of Jesus. In this revised and updated second edition Wright digs deeper into the Old Testament revealing the God whom Jesus embodied. Each chapter is followed with questions and exercises, which can be used either in personal study or in group discussion.

✏Understanding the Bible Head and Heart Book Summary : Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides readers a forum for more fully comprehending the Bible. Each book of the Bible tells a story that relates to the larger story, and to understand each book’s story, it is important to understand the larger story, and vice versa. To do so, however, entails a careful reading of the entire Bible, grasping both the fact of the story and the spirit of the story. Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart provides interpretative prose summaries for helping the reader understand and remember the fact of the story, and penetrating poetic summaries for helping the reader experience the story and thereby readily ingest its spirit. Since Understanding the Bible: Head and Heart would be a bit lengthy under one cover, it is divided into three parts: Part One: The Old Testament; Part Two: Matthew through Acts; and Part Three: Romans through Revelation.
