This chapter is dedicated to studying fretting corrosion of implants. After describing the most significant implants subjected to fretting, fretting corrosion is defined. Fretting corrosion is a particular degradation mechanism; it highlights the key role of passive film, crevice corrosion, etc. For demonstrating the electrochemical effect of the fretting corrosion of metal, some investigations are presented at free corrosion potential and at applied potential to measure the specific current density. Moreover, the role of proteins is investigated because they constitute the biological environment and thus play a significant role in fretting corrosion processes. ✏Influence of Temperature on the Corrosion and Tribocorrosion Behaviour of High Strength Low Alloy Steels Used in Offshore Applications Book Summary : Abstract: Tribocorrosion is an important failure cause of High-Strength Low-Alloy steel (HSLA) components in offshore applications due to the synergistic effect of wear and the corrosiveness of seawater. In this work, the effect of temperature on the tribocorrosion behaviour of two steel grades has been investigated by performing tribocorrosion tests under reciprocating sliding at two electrolyte temperatures. The total material loss due to corrosion in the unworn surface and due to tribocorrosion in the wear track was quantified. Sliding was found to accelerate the corrosion in the unworn area. Furthermore, temperature was confirmed to have an important effect on the tribocorrosion behaviour of the steels, in terms of higher material losses due to corrosion at higher test temperature. Highlights: The influence of temperature on the tribocorrosion behaviour of two mooring steel grades was studied. Bidirectional sliding wear tests were performed at two electrolyte temperatures (2 °C and 23 °C). The corrosion resistance decreased considerably during sliding, specially at 23 °C. The principal cause of material loss was tribocorrosion in the wear track. The material loss due to pure corrosion was more than two times higher at 23 °C.

✏1866 Metal Release Response Surface for a Tribocorrosion Bioreactor to Study Cell Response to Wear and Corrosion Debris Book Summary : INTRODUCTION: Total joint replacement faces the problem of wear and corrosion which have the potential to trigger adverse local tissue reactions. Mechanical and electrochemical engineering studies aim to better understand the mechanisms of wear and corrosion of implant alloys in the presence of model synovial fluids (tribocorrosion tests). On the other hand, biology focuses on the cell and tissue response to wear and corrosion degradation products (particles, ions, complexes). Combining both engineering and biological approaches by integrating cell cultures into tribocorrosion tests would lead to new insights, particularly in the case of short lived, meta-stable ionic and/or proteinaceous degradation products. The aim of this work was to develop and calibrate a new tribocorrosion-bioreactor, operating inside a CO2 incubator and generating in a controlled way enough wear and corrosion debris to trigger cell response.METHODS: The test rig design was based on a lever-arm to load the metallic samples and a three-electrode configuration for potential control. The area of CoCrMo exposed to the lubricant was 1.3 cm2. Temperature and pH were maintained constant in a CO2 incubator. The tribological set-up was based on a ball-on-flat configuration (ceramic-on-metal/Al2O3-on-CoCrMo) with reciprocating sliding motion. A cell culture medium (RPMI-1640 + 10% Bovine Calf Serum) was used as lubricant. A 2-level 3-factor design of experiments with center point (n = 2, 20 tests) was implemented for a series of tribocorrosion tests run for 12 h at 4 Hz. The 3 factors were given by the following parameters: motion amplitude (range: 20u00b0- 40u00b0); applied load (range: 17N u2013 33N); electrochemical potential (range: 0V u2013 0.9V vs. Ag/AgCl). The amount of metal released from the CoCrMo-discs was quantified from measurements of weight loss and wear scar volume. The influence of the parameters was statistically evaluated, with generation of a calibration response surface for a 3D representation of the influence of the 3 parameters. Lubricant samples were saved after each test and the concentration of the metal elements Co, Cr, Mo in the lubricants was determined by ICP-MS (Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry).RESULTS SECTION: The motion amplitude was the most effective factor influencing the wear scar volume, followed by the applied load. Interestingly, the applied voltage had no significant effect of the wear scar volume (see Figure 2). In contrast, the applied voltage had a major effect on the overall weight loss of the metallic disc, which was not significantly influenced by motion amplitude and applied load (see Figure 3). The weight loss values were found to be proportional to the total charge density calculated by integration of the current curves during wear. The mass corresponding to the maximum wear scar volume (test with 33N, 0V vs. Ag/AgCl, 40u00b0) was 0.215 mg. The highest weight loss (test 33N, 0.9V vs. Ag/AgCl, 40u00b0) was 2.21 mg. Considering the composition of the bulk alloy for the material lost by wear and corrosion, these mass/weight values correspond to Cobalt concentration values of 6 ppm and 62 ppm respectively.DISCUSSION: The significant effect of the applied voltage on the weight loss of the metallic sample and its insignificant effect on the wear scar volume means that, at the highest voltage of 0.9V, metal dissolution occurs predominantly outside the wear scar. As no macroscopic evidence of any type of corrosion was seen, we assume that this metal dissolution occurs through the oxide film, which undergoes changes in its chemical and physical properties during the process. This assumption is supported by the observation, only at this potential, of a film of denaturized proteins covering the area of the sample around the scar. Further analysis of the oxide film properties was beyond the scope of this work.SIGNIFICANCE/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A related study [1] reported a 30-70% decrease in cell viability with cobalt concentrations between 6 to 60 ppm. In our study, the calculated amount of Cobalt released in both conditions at high and low voltage lays in this range. Consequently, we expect our test rig to produce enough metal debris to trigger an immune cell response. As next steps, we will develop a protocol to maintain sterility in the test rig and check for the effect of applied voltage on cell viability for baseline purposes. ✏Tribocorrosion Behavior of Metallic Implants Book Summary : Total joint replacements (TJR's) are used to replace deteriorating hip joints, knees, shoulders, wrists and fingers for millions of people in modern-day medicine. They are treatments used for patients with severe cases of arthritis or rheumatism which are mostly common in old-aged people. There was a reported 1.2 million total joint replacement surgeries, primary and revised, across the United States between the years 2012 and 2017. Recent research has pointed out the primary concern with TJR's is the loosening of the prosthetic which further causes destruction of the bone tissue following wear corrosion and failure of the implant. In addition, there were a total of 350 000 total hip replacement surgeries in the U.S between the years 2012 and 2017. The most common type of hip replacements is metal on metal hip replacements. They are preferred because of the less total loss of material being removed from the ball and socket during articulation, low chance of dislocation and reduced chance of fracture. The most common types of metals used in Metal on Metal hip replacements are Cobalt Chromate alloys and Titanium alloys. Cobalt Chromate alloys were studied by Haynes in 1900s who showed that the basic binary Cobalt Chromate alloy exhibited high strength and low chemical reactivity. Generally, these alloys have high-wear resistance, high strength, and modulus of elasticity and high corrosion resistance which makes them useful for orthopedic implants. Titanium on the other hand is useful for orthopedic implants because of its inertness in a biochemical environment with mechanical strengths. In this thesis, modular Cobalt Chromate (Co-Cr-Mo) and Titanium (Ti6Al4V) alloys were subjected to continuous fatigue contact in a corrosive biochemical environment. The change in the passive layers of these alloys were observed by electrochemical characterizations during small displacement mechanical loading in different pH environments. Namely, Phosphate Buffer Solution (PBS) with a pH of 7.4, Sodium lactate solution which pH of 4 and 2. To further understand chemo-mechanical synergism, and damage recovery behaviors of two different oxides, a Nano-scratch based experiment was carried out in a tribochemical cell. Cyclic reciprocating motions with an alumina sphere was applied with controlled normal load in the solutions. The open circuit potential and potentiostatic polarization were used to measure the 2 polarization resistance and potential. Changes of electrochemical responses were monitored using the Gamry Potentiometer to quantitatively compare alterations of wear track area, roughness, and oxide thickness on both implant materials during mechanical wear. After thorough investigation, it can be deduced that the formation of oxide layer in the Titanium alloys occurs during fretting, after fretting and in some instances before fretting. CoCrMo however does not re-passivate during fretting but does recover its oxide layer after.

✏1006 Carbide Derived Carbon CDC on Ti alloy To Enhance Tribocorrossive Resistance at THR Interfaces Book Summary : INTRODUCTION: The wear products generated from the interfaces of total hip replacements (THR) (head-cup bearings or modular junctions) cause several adverse effects on the patients. Recently, there is an increased effort in solving such effects by novel protective materials such as carbide-derived carbon (CDC). The tribocorrosion processes in the hip implant are mainly attributed to the combined impact of wear and corrosion in the crevice of the taper junction. Typically, the motion amplitudes are small, which is called fretting. The wear products and metal ions that are released can cause hypersensitivity, toxicological reaction, bone resorption and formation of pseudotumor[1]. Deposition of other materials onto the surfaces of metals is a common approach, but has often yielded unreliable adherence of the deposited layer to the substrate, which lead to sudden delamination and instability of the coating. Another set of modification techniques includes the growth of protective material into the substrate, as in the case of thermal oxidized titanium or solid carburization[2], which provides strong bonding between the protective layer and substrate and, thus, reduces any possibility of delamination. In this category, the CDC is considered as a recent novel development. Moreover, in a prior study, the superior tribological behavior and sustainable properties of CDC could be estblished[3]. However, there is still some concern on the tribocorrosion and biological properties of CDC for the application in hip joints. In this study, we hypothesize CDC can provide a good tribocorrosion resistance with acceptable biocompatibility on Ti6Al4V alloy. In order to test the hypothesis, CDC was tested in a tribocorrosion hip simulator under varying wear conditions and its biocompatibility was evaluated.METHODS: This research can be divided into five stages: (1) Material preparation: there are two steps to produce CDC on Ti6Al4V, carburization, and chlorination. In this study, we chose solid carburization methods. Here, Ti6Al4V pins (11 mm dia and 7mm thickness) were first inserted in an alumina crucible and enclosed by graphite powder. Then, the crucible was transported into a horizontal furnace, the specimens were undergone carburization and chlorination in the presence of argon (Ar) gas for a period of 27 hrs. (2) Material characterization: The carburized titanium and CDC were characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). (3) Tribocorrosion test (N=3): the hip simulator consists of two components, corrosion cell, and tribometer [4]. The corrosion cell contains bovine calf serum (protein content: 30 g/L) as the simulated synovial fluid, graphite rod as a counter electrode (CE), standard calomel electrode (SCE) as a reference electrode (RE) and the specimen (Ti-control and CDC) as the working electrode (WE). The data acquisition system was made from Gamry Instruments (Interface 1000). The tribometer is comprised of pin-on-ball tribological system. The metal sample (Pin) is pressed with a normal force of 16N against a ceramic ball (CeramTec) using a pneumatic pressure system. The ball oscillates with a u00b130u00b0 amplitude at a frequency of 1Hz. The coefficient of friction and electrochemical parameters can be monitored throughout the experiment. There were two conditions of the tribocorrosion experiment , open circuit potential(OCP) and potentiostatic (PS) at -0.2(V) vs SCE and both of them were performed for 3600 (s). (4) Fretting corrosion test (N=3): Similar to the tribocorrosion test, the experimental set-up consists of two parts, corrosion cell and fretting corrosion instrument. The corrosion cell has a similar configuration as mentioned above. The fretting corrosion instrument has been designed to simulate the modular junction of the femoral head and the implant stem, in which two samples are pressed at a normal force of 200 N against a CoCrMo rod that reciprocated with +/- 50 u03bcm for 3600s at a frequency of 1 (Hz). (5) Biocompatibility (N=3): Biocompatibility was tested with osteoblast cells (MG-63). Cell proliferation and cellular growth after 1, 3, 6 days were analyzed using alamarBlue assay and Rhodamine phalloidine/DAPI staining. Confocal images were taken to confirm the results of cell proliferation.RESULTS: (1) Material characterization: The XRD spectrum clearly shows the presence of TiC, which confirms the success of the carburization process. The remaining titanium alloy peaks might stem from the substrate, which means the formed titanium carbide layer is not very thick. After the chlorination process, Raman spectroscopy verified that CDC has successfully been produced. (2) Tribocorrosion: Compared to Ti6Al4V, CDC had less of a potential drop, less induced current, a lower amount of wear loss and a lower friction coefficient, demonstrating the protective effect of CDC relative to the substrate. (3) Fretting corrosion: Titanium alloy specimens were detected at much lower open circuit potential (E= -0.7 V) than CDC group throughout the experiment, indicating the fretting corrosion resistance of CDC. (4) Biocompatibility: Based on the cell proliferation data, CDC has the same cell proliferation rate as titanium alloy, suggesting its biocompatibility.DISCUSSION: Compared with Ti6Al4V, CDCu2019s OCP values show only a slight reduction when sliding starts. Moreover, values remained stable during sliding and the overall wear volume was lower. This indicates a better tribological and corrosion behavoior of CDC. The slight decrease in potential during sliding might stem from the penetration of solution into the substrate through the CDCu2019s porous structure. In addition, the oscillation of the alumina ball might encourage such penetration of the solution resulting in potential drops that could eventually adversely affect the re-passivation kinetics[4]. PS data clearly indicate that there is no induced current at E = -0.2V under mechanical sliding, which is remarkable. It is worth mentioning that in 2011, from retrieved hip implant, Liao et al [5] characterized a tribolayer [6] , which has the similar Raman spectrum, representing the likeness between tribolayer and CDC. The authors suggested that the tribolayer could provide solid lubrication and mitigate in-vivo wear and corrosion. Based on the current study, CDC not only structurally resembles the tribolayer, but also provides similar protection. In this study, Ti6Al4V has been chosen as substrate material However, its application on other material, as for example CoCrMo, is conceivable. Further research will focus on the novel carburization technique to form stable carbide and CDC on CoCrMo alloy.SIGNIFICANCE: Compared with titanium, CDC has superior tribocorrosion resistance and protects the underlying Ti6Al4V alloy substrate.
