The detection and resolution of conflicts, which are particularly complex and must be dealt with in real time, are currently processed manually by operators. However, the experience and abilities of these operators are no longer sufficient when faced with the complexity of the problems to be solved. It is thus necessary to provide them with an interactive tool to help with the management of disturbances, enabling them to identify the different disturbances, to characterize and prioritize these disturbances, to process them by taking into account their specifics and to evaluate the impact of the decisions in real time. Each chapter of this book can be broken down into an approach for solving a transport problem in 3 stages, i.e. modeling the problem, creating optimization algorithms and validating the solutions. The management of a transport system calls for knowledge of a variety of theories (problem modeling tools, multi-objective problem classification, optimization algorithms, etc.). The different constraints increase its complexity drastically and thus require a model that represents as far as possible all the components of a problem in order to better identify it and propose corresponding solutions. These solutions are then evaluated according to the criteria of the transport providers as well as those of the city transport authorities. Model simulations can be use to gain insight into the system behaviour of different land use and soil composition under temperate humid and humid tropic conditions, The existing package OPOL, based on a non steady model, was further developed to the version OPOL5 for the simulation of hydrological conditions and optimization of the main components of water management systems in polder areas in the temperate humid and humid tropical zone. This model reveals a system's behaviour as well as the effects of variation in the main components of the systems to the overall costs. For example, the designs of pumped drainage systems in polder areas can be optimized by varying the main components until the annual equivalent costs are minimum. A GIS tool has been used to complement OPOL5 for the simulation of the real situation in an area with respect to land use, damage, topography, and soil type. The model package has been applied to two case studies: one in the temperate humid zone, namely the Netherlands and to Thailand in the humid tropical zone.

✏Application of Flow and Transport Optimization Codes to Groundwater Pump and Treat Systems Book Summary : A 1995 Department of Defense (DOD) Inspector General report indicates that the cumulative operating and maintenance (O & M) costs for 75 pump and treat systems operating at DoD chlorinated solvent groundwater sites (a subset of over 200 DoD pump and treat sites) was $40 million in fiscal year (FY) 1996. The report also projected that these costs would reach $1 billion by the year 2020. Recent studies completed by the EPA and the Navy indicate that the majority of pump and treat systems are not operating as designed have unachievable or undefined goals and have not been optimized since installation. Even under ideal circumstances, (i.e. when the initial pump and treat system has been appropriately designed with clearly-defined objectives), changes in contaminant distributions and aquifer stresses, coupled with evolving regulatory climates, result in the need for system optimization. Although it is recognized that many of these pump and treat systems are ineffective for cleanup regulations require that they continue to operate until a more effective solution is developed. In the interim the potential for tremendous cost savings exists with the application of simple screening tools and optimization- simulation modeling. The optimization- simulation models link mathematical at optimization techniques with simulations of groundwater flow and/or solute transport to determine the best combination of well locations and pumping rates.
