✏But What If We re Wrong Book Summary : New York Times bestselling author Chuck Klosterman asks questions that are profound in their simplicity: How certain are we about our understanding of gravity? How certain are we about our understanding of time? What will be the defining memory of rock music, five hundred years from today? How seriously should we view the content of our dreams? How seriously should we view the content of television? Are all sports destined for extinction? Is it possible that the greatest artist of our era is currently unknown (or—weirder still—widely known, but entirely disrespected)? Is it possible that we “overrate” democracy? And perhaps most disturbing, is it possible that we’ve reached the end of knowledge? Klosterman visualizes the contemporary world as it will appear to those who'll perceive it as the distant past. Kinetically slingshotting through a broad spectrum of objective and subjective problems, But What If We’re Wrong? is built on interviews with a variety of creative thinkers—George Saunders, David Byrne, Jonathan Lethem, Kathryn Schulz, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Brian Greene, Junot Díaz, Amanda Petrusich, Ryan Adams, Nick Bostrom, Dan Carlin, and Richard Linklater, among others—interwoven with the type of high-wire humor and nontraditional analysis only Klosterman would dare to attempt. It’s a seemingly impossible achievement: a book about the things we cannot know, explained as if we did. It’s about how we live now, once “now” has become “then.” From the Hardcover edition.

✏History Memory and State Sponsored Violence Book Summary : Modern historiography embraces the notion that time is irreversible, implying that the past should be imagined as something ‘absent’ or ‘distant.’ Victims of historical injustice, however, in contrast, often claim that the past got ‘stuck’ in the present and that it retains a haunting presence. History, Memory, and State-Sponsored Violence is centered around the provocative thesis that the way one deals with historical injustice and the ethics of history is strongly dependent on the way one conceives of historical time; that the concept of time traditionally used by historians is structurally more compatible with the perpetrators’ than the victims’ point of view. Demonstrating that the claim of victims about the continuing presence of the past should be taken seriously, instead of being treated as merely metaphorical, Berber Bevernage argues that a genuine understanding of the ‘irrevocable’ past demands a radical break with modern historical discourse and the concept of time. By embedding a profound philosophical reflection on the themes of historical time and historical discourse in a concrete series of case studies, this project transcends the traditional divide between ‘empirical’ historiography on the one hand and the so called ‘theoretical’ approaches to history on the other. It also breaks with the conventional ‘analytical’ philosophy of history that has been dominant during the last decades, raising a series of long-neglected ‘big questions’ about the historical condition – questions about historical time, the unity of history, and the ontological status of present and past –programmatically pleading for a new historical ethics.

✏Eternity and Time s Flow Book Summary : Neville returns eternity to the center of consideration by analyzing the obsessive culture that attempts to get along denying it; and he analyzes the nature of time’s flow itself, the nature of divine eternity, and the subtle problems of personal immortality. He argues that time and eternity constitute one topic and that, therefore, time itself is beyond understanding, beyond personal grasp, and beyond civilized orientation without a proper comprehension of eternity.

✏Collingwood s The Idea of History Book Summary : The Idea of History is the best known work of the Oxford philosopher and historian RG Collingwood. Published posthumously in 1946 it is, in effect, two books: a historiography and a philosophy of history. Students look to Collingwood for a history of thinking about history, and to discover his ideas about the nature of historical understanding. It is an indispensable text for historians and philosophers yet it is also highly challenging and many of Collingwood's innovations have been seriously misunderstood. The primary focus of this book is on Collingwood's actual arguments, especially the most radical of these, with the aim of elucidating their construction and appraising them in the clearest possible way. This guide is the ideal companion to Collingwood's classic text both for students coming to it for the first time and for those wishing to consider its arguments afresh. It offers clear and concise accounts of the book's composition; the intellectual context of Collingwood's ideas; its central arguments concerning the nature of history; and its reception and influence.

✏Reflections on a Time That Has Past the 2Nd World War Years 1939 1945 Book Summary : At the beginning of World War ll ,the British Government decided to evacuate the children from the cities to safer places in the countryside, and also overseas to other countries. Really where could be safer in the country? The logic behind the plan was that IF, Hitler succeeded in occupying Great Britain, the children could return someday and take their country back. This is the story of my brother, age 4,and myself age 9,who were evacuated September 9th. 1939, to America. My brother's mother, who was my step-mother, accompanied us to elderly relatives that lived in New York State. Then for reasons known only to herself, at that time, she decided to travel back across the U-boat infested waters of the Atlantic to England. Different homes were found eventually for us which was a miracle, as there were at least 2,664, Children's Oversees Reception Board (CORB) children to find homes for. The Kodak Company's families in New York opened their homes to these British evacuees, primarily for the children of the Kodak Company in Great Britian, however they ended up taking a lot of the other children. As we had been sent privately on the S.S.Scythia, we were not included in that number. We also were returned May 8th 1944, one month before D-Day, on a Neutral Portuguese ship to Lisbon. The war did not end until May 8th 1945 so we were back in England in time for the newest German weapon the Vengence Weapon l, or Doodle bug, or Buzz-bomb. This is our War Time story of our adventures, mostly mine, told 73 years later with the memories, some good and some bad, as you will see when you read the book. Thank you for your interest. It is still facinating to me today.

✏New Philosophy of Social Conflict Book Summary : A New Philosophy of Social Conflict joins in the contemporary conflict resolution and transitional justice debates by contributing a Deleuze-Guattarian reading of the post-genocide justice and reconciliation experiment in Rwanda -the Gacaca courts. In doing so, Hawes addresses two significant problems for which the work of Deleuze and Guattari provides invaluable insight: how to live ethically with the consequences of conflict and trauma and how to negotiate the chaos of living through trauma, in ways that create self-organizing, discursive processes for resolving and reconciling these ontological dilemmas in life-affirming ways. Hawes draws on Deleuze-Guattarian thinking to create new concepts that enable us to think more productively and to live more ethically in a world increasingly characterized by sociocultural trauma and conflict, and to imagine alternative ways of resolving and reconciling trauma and conflict.

Ayya Khema, author of the best-selling Being Nobody, Going Nowhere, uses one of the earliest Buddhist suttas to guide us along the path of the oldest Buddhist meditative practice for understanding the nature of "self." By following the Buddha's explanation with clear, insightful examples from her years of teaching meditation, she guides us back and forth between the relative understanding and higher realizations of the Buddhist concept of "self." Her thoughtful contemplation of the Buddha's radical understanding of "self" and her practical advice for achieving insight offer the reader a profound understanding of the "self." Both beginning and advanced practitioners will greatly benefit from Ayya Khema's warm and down-to-earth exposition of the Buddha's meditation on "self."

✏The Past in Present Times Book Summary : The Past in Present Times exposes the violations of human rights, war crimes, and genocide during the rise of the former Yugoslavia during World War I, prior to and directly after World War II, the Yugoslav War, and the recent fall of the federation. In addition to the legal findings by the Nuremberg and Hague Tribunals, including the most recent trials, this legal-historical analysis reviews details of undisputed facts and recorded dialogues, which unveils surprising background information. As Dr. Lajco Klajn leads the reader along an historical line of events, he clarifies the factors and circumstances that led to genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity while explaining the social, legal, historical, and moral consequences. Without forcing judgment about the past, Dr. Klajn exposes the roots of these conflicts and explains why if the roots are not eradicated, the conflicts may resurface in the future as a manifestation of even more monstrous wars and suffering as the past becomes the present once again.

Yet the fascinating fact is that these polarizing time differences play a potent role in attracting lovers in the first place. ✏A Guide to English Grammar Book Summary : There is elements of language that allow us to better understand the world. Abstractions in language help us classify ideas into groups so that we may generalize or specify parts within a label. For instance a car is made up of many parts, such as the engine, the wheels, the body, etc. We call it a car instead of of "an engine driving the wheels with a body attached to carry passengers", to make it easier for us not only to transfer the though within our mind, but also to others. Also, by calling it a car, we have differentiated the object from a train or a bike, both being other modes of transportation. Abstractions are part of our mental girds that help us by chopping reality into fragments so that we may organize it and put it into our grasp of understanding. Something such as the temperature cannot be measured because it is infinitely variable. It is just our enviroment reduced to numbers so that we can conceive it in our minds. Again, our world is divided into pieces so the human mind can understand it bit buy bit. From seeing a car to measuring the temperature, language offers an explanation to our experience and it is a powerful tool to help us think.

✏Resolving Environmental Conflicts Second Edition Book Summary : True progress toward an ecologically sound environment and a socially just culture will be initially expensive in money and effort. The longer we wait, however, the more disastrous the environmental condition will become, the more disputes will arise as a result of our declining quality of life, and the more expensive and difficult the necessary social changes will be. The second edition of a bestseller, Resolving Environmental Conflicts demonstrates how to practice the type of conflict resolution that not only settles a dispute but also heals the people. Once the consultants and mediators leave, the work must go on. This second edition covers the basic transformative concepts vital for resolving environmental conflicts. It includes discussions of the inviolate biophysical principles, how the English language is changing, as well as the critical principles of social behavior. It also examines new dynamics in making decisions along with the effects of the younger generations shifting their interests from nature-oriented interest to technologically oriented interests and their subsequent lack of understanding the importance of the natural environment to a sustainable society. No biological shortcuts, technological quick fixes, or political rhetoric can mend what is broken. Dramatic, fundamental change is necessary if we are really concerned with bettering the quality of life. It is not a question of can we change or can't we, but one of will we change or won't we. Change is a choice, a choice of individuals reflected in the collective of society and mirrored in the landscape throughout the generations. Considerably more than a "how to" directive, this book examines the "whys" of the mediation process and broadens the knowledge base by providing the philosophical underpinnings of "a new environmental responsibility."
