Abstract : Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters can harvest singlet and triplet excitons for light emission to afford highly efficient organic light-emitting diode (OLED) devices, especially for all-TADF white OLEDs (WOLEDs). However, the majority of TADF emitters suffer from concentration quenching effects and require complicated doping techniques for device fabrication. Herein, we demonstrate a yellow TADF emitter that enables non-doped OLED systems, which is beneficial for the simplification of the OLED device structure and fabrication. The non-doped yellow OLED achieves a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 16.7% at a high luminance of 3600 cd m −2, in which such a high magnitude is rarely reported. More significantly, by the combination of the yellow TADF emitter with a blue TADF emitter, a fully non-doped emissive layer (EML) strategy has been demonstrated for the fabrication of an all-TADF WOLED, in which the non-doped yellow and blue TADF emissive layers are closely stacked together without any interlayers. The fully non-doped WOLEDs show a maximum EQE of up to 19.8%, along with high quality white-light emission. This is the first report regarding the fully non-doped all-TADF WOLEDs, and the presented design strategy provides a universal route towards the fabrication of simple and efficient WOLEDs.

✏A New Generation of Organic Light Emitting Materials and Devices Book Summary : Since the invention of the first efficient organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by C. T. Tang and S. VanSlyke, OLEDs have attracted close interest as a promising candidate for next-generation full-color displays and future solid-state lighting sources because of a number of advantages like high brightness and contrast, high luminous efficiency, fast response time, wide viewing angle, low power consumption, and light weight. The recombination of holes and electrons under electrical excitation typically generates 25% singlet excitons and 75% triplet excitons. For traditional fluorescent OLEDs, only 25% singlet excitons can be utilized to emit light, while the other 75% triplet excitons are generally wasted through nonradiative transition. By adopting noble metal phosphorescent complexes, an internal quantum efficiency (IQE) of 100% could be achieved by utilizing both the 25% singlet excitons and 75% triplet excitons. However, these phosphors usually contain nonrenewable and highcost iridium or platinum noble metals. Most recently, unity IQE has been readily achieved through noble metal-free purely organic emitters, such as thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, hybridized local and charge-transfer state (HLCT) “hot exciton” emitters, binary- or ternary-mixed donor-acceptor exciplex emitters, and neutral p radical emitters, etc. In addition, the combination of conventional p-type hole-transport and n-type electron-transport materials in an appropriate device structure can also provide an uncommon efficiency. Both strategies are essential and attractive for high-performance and low-cost full-color displays and white OLED applications. The stability of the encapsulated devices are investigated in detail. The devices with the 10 wt% doped TXO-PhCz emitter layer (EML) show the best performance with a current efficiency of 52.1 cd/A, a power efficiency of 32.7 lm/W, and an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 17.7%. The devices based on the 10 wt%-doped TXO-PhCz EML show the best operational stability with a half-life time (LT50) of 80 h, which is 8 h longer than that of the reference devices based on fac-tris(2-phenylpyridinato)iridium(III) (Ir(ppy)3 ). These indicate excellent stability of TXO-PhCz for redox and oxidation processes under electrical excitation and TXO-PhCz can be potentially used as the emitters for OLEDs with high efficiency and excellent stability. The high-performance device based on TXO-PhCz with high stability can be further improved by the optimization of the encapsulation technology and the development of a new host for TXO-PhCz.

The investigation of a large variety of complexes by absorption and emission spectroscopy, supported by theoretical calculations and electrochemical measurements, enabled a thorough understanding of the steric and electronic effects of the ligands on the complexes' emission. Furthermore, the mechanism of thermally activated delayed fluorescence could be illustrated by means of time-resolved emission spectroscopy, and the intersystem crossing of a representative TADF complex determined in the solid state for the first time, which is essential for the design of efficient TADF materials.

Abstract : Three highly efficient blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters, 2SPAc-HPM, 2SPAc-MPM and2SPAc-PPM, have been synthesised based on pyrimidine (PM), 2-methylpyrimidine (MPM) and 2-phenylpyrimidine (PPM) as the acceptor and 10 H -spiro[acridan-9, 9′-fluorene] (2SPAc) as the donor moiety. With their appropriate molecular design, these emitters successfully achieve small singlet–triplet splitting energies for efficient reverse intersystem crossing, and exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields. As a result, TADF OLEDs based on2SPAc-HPM, 2SPAc-MPM and2SPAc-PPM emit blue light peaking at 479–489 nm and generate very high external quantum efficiencies of 25.56%, 24.34% and 31.45%, respectively. The2SPAc-PPM -based TADF OLED is also one of the very few blue TADF emitters with an external quantum efficiency of more than 30%, and it has the best OLED performance among the pyrimidine-based TADF emitters.

✏Modular Design Strategies for TADF Emitters Towards Highly Efficient Materials for OLED Application Book Summary : Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are one of the most promising lighting technologies of the recent years not only due to their efficiency and energy saving capabilities, but also for their unique features in the realization of transparent and flexible display solutions. Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is considered as the most promising mechanism for electroluminescence for OLED application as this allows a complete conversion of excitons to photons. In this work, strategies for the development of TADF materials for solution processed OLED devices were pursued: Isophthalonitrile- and phthalimide-based TADF emitters were chemically modified with derivatization on the acceptor and donor groups in order to study the structure-to-property relationships. A modular approach allowed the introduction of various functional groups and structural motives. Besides succeeding in attaching a TADF emitter to biomolecules and oligomers for various applications like fluorescence imaging, the optoelectronic properties were manipulated mainly with regards to the emission wavelength covering a total range of 437 nm to 541 nm with typically small increments of 2 nm. Most promising emitters were employed in solution processed OLED devices, resulting in external quantum efficiencies (EQE) of up to 16%. In addition, the tris[1,2,4]triazolo[1,3,5]triazine (TTT) core was successfully implemented as novel acceptor group for TADF emitters. Hence, a synthesis for the TTT core with peripheral donor groups was developed. The donor strength and count were identified as key drivers for the emission color (398 nm to 466 nm) and the dihedral angle as critical measure for TADF characteristics.

✏Unicolored Phosphor sensitized Fluorescence for Efficient and Stable Blue OLEDs Book Summary : Improving lifetimes and efficiencies of blue organic light-emitting diodes is clearly a scientific challenge. Towards solving this challenge, we propose a unicolored phosphor-sensitized fluorescence approach, with phosphorescent and fluorescent emitters tailored to preserve the initial color of phosphorescence. Using this approach, we design an efficient sky-blue light-emitting diode with radiative decay times in the submicrosecond regime. By changing the concentration of fluorescent emitter, we show that the lifetime is proportional to the reduction of the radiative decay time and tune the operational stability to lifetimes of up to 320)h (80% decay, initial luminance of 1000)cd/m2). Unicolored phosphor-sensitized fluorescence provides a clear path towards efficient and stable blue light-emitting diodes, helping to overcome the limitations of thermally activated delayed fluorescence.

✏24 1 Device Stability Enhancement In TADF OLEDs Book Summary : Abstract : Organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) under constant current operation suffer from a decrease of luminance accompanied by an increase of driving voltage. We report a way to greatly improve the stability of OLEDs having a green emitter exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF), (4s, 6s)‐2, 4, 5, 6‐tetra(9Hcarbazol‐ 9‐yl) isophthalonitrile (4CzIPN), by introducing ultrathin (1 to 3 nm) interlayers of 8‐hydroxyquinolinato lithium (Liq) between hole‐blocking layer and its surrounding emissive and electron‐transport layers. Under constant current operation starting at a luminescence of 1, 000 cd/m 2, the time to reach 90% of initial luminance (LT90 ) increased eight times, resulting in LT90 = 1, 380 hours after insertion of the interlayers. Combining this new concept and mixed host system, LT95 was further extended to 1315 hours that is 16 times of reference device. This is the best value reported for TADF‐based OLEDs and is comparable to the operational lifetimes of well‐established phosphorescence‐based OLEDs. Thermally stimulated current measurements showed that the number of deep charge traps was reduced with the insertion of the ultrathin Liq interlayer, indicating that reducing the number of deep traps is important for improving the operational lifetime and that exciton‐polaron annihilation may be a source of the device degradation.
