📒Modernizing Legal Services In Common Law Countries ✍ Laura Snyder
✏Modernizing Legal Services in Common Law Countries Book Summary : Most people understand that regulations have a direct bearing on their access to things such as clean air and water and safe working environments. However, in the United States, few people make the connection between how legal services are regulated and how difficult it is for them to access legal services. Indeed, on the question of affordable and accessible civil justice, the World Justice Project ranks the US 94th out of 113 countries, behind Albania, Belarus, Myanmar, and Russia. For decades academics and others have debated whether the legal profession is self-regulated and, if it is, whether it should be. But is it the right debate? Self-regulation—or not—does not obviate the need for effective regulation. Independent, accountable, and transparent regulatory bodies, effective oversight of those bodies, the genuine engagement of citizens in the regulatory process, evidence-based research to fully assess the impact of regulation, and an approach to regulation that is proportionate and targeted to actual risks are essential for effective regulation. Through the lens of the adoption of alternative structures, this book explains how England, Wales, and Australia have, by embracing these essential elements, successfully modernized their regulatory environments for legal services, and how Canada has taken firm steps down its own path to the same. In contrast, by rejecting these elements, the United States remains paralyzed in an unproductive regulatory environment for legal services. This book provides a blueprint for how the US can take inspiration from its common law sisters to breathe new life into its regulatory environment for legal services. Ultimately, modernization will require more—and better—regulation that is financed publicly through equitable, progressive revenue sources.
📒Never Deny A Duke ✍ Madeline Hunter
✏Never Deny a Duke Book Summary : He is the last duke standing . . . the sole remaining bachelor of the three self-proclaimed Decadent Dukes. Yet Davina MacCallum’s reasons for searching out the handsome Duke of Brentworth have nothing to do with marriage. Scottish lands were unfairly confiscated from her family by the Crown and given to his. A reasonable man with vast holdings can surely part with one trivial estate, especially when Davina intends to put it to good use. Brentworth, however, is as difficult to persuade as he is to resist. The Duke of Brentworth’s discretion and steely control make him an enigma even to his best friends. Women especially find him inscrutable and unapproachable—but also compellingly magnetic. So when Davina MacCallum shows no signs of being even mildly impressed by him, he is intrigued. Until he learns that her mission in London involves claims against his estate. Soon the two of them are engaged in a contest that allows no compromise. When duty and desire collide, the best laid plans are about to take a scandalous turn—into the very heart of passion . . . Madeline Hunter’s novels are: “Brilliant, compelling. . . . An excellent read.” —The Washington Post “Mesmerizing.” —Publishers Weekly “Pure passion.” —Booklist
📒The Rabbi S Cholent ✍ Norbert Weinberg
✏The Rabbi s Cholent Book Summary : An old maxim states that a rabbi delivers three sermons every Shabbat morning. The first is the one he prepares. The second is the one he delivers, followed by the third which is the one he wishes he would have delivered. The bulk of this book is inspired by the third part of this adage. There are so many ideas, concepts and even proverbs which the author was eager to share with his congregants, students and friends. However, people’s lives are busy and few opportunities present themselves to express favorite and cherished perceptions and ideas. Since Rabbi Weinberg’s hobby is to cook, bake and putter in the kitchen, the thought struck him that an in-tellectual/spiritual “cholent recipe” encapsulated in the pages of a book might give him and his readers an enriching experience. The themes are eclectic and run a free course. They are culled from study, experience and much of what has been heard and observed. The reader is invited to enter this charming world of thought, hypo-thesis and speculation. Each essay will doubtless trigger many personal thoughts and experiences in its wake.
