✏The Future of Automated Freight Transport Book Summary : This book explores the many challenges faced by the development and implementation of automated freight transport systems. It offers a unique overview of current applications, developments and future perspectives. The subject of automation is not covered extensively in the existing literature on freight transport and this book aims to fill the gap.In view of the increasing difficulties in coping with growing transport volumes in an efficient and sustainable way, the development of new automated freight applications could be a viable alternative. The first chapters of the book are devoted to an overview of concepts and current research developments in automated transport, outlining the opportunities, barriers and threats for further development paths for different transport modes. The authors then go on to focus on innovative tools to design and evaluate these new transport developments. The book closes with a detailed and critical analysis of what is, probably, the most critical part of system innovation; that is the implementation of automated systems.Written from a multi-disciplinary perspective, which reflects the diversity of the relevant issues needing consideration when designing, developing and implementing such systems, this book will be an invaluable source for scholars and researchers of innovation and transport studies. In addition, the book will be useful to policymakers and practitioners involved in the design, development and implementation of new technologies for freight transport. It may also appeal to wider readers with an interest in the future of freight transport systems.

✏Critical Infrastructure Protection in Homeland Security Book Summary : "...excellent for use as a text in information assurance orcyber-security courses...I strongly advocate thatprofessors...examine this book with the intention of using it intheir programs." (Computing Reviews.com, March 22, 2007) "The book is written as a student textbook, but it should beequally valuable for current practitioners...this book is a veryworthwhile investment." (Homeland Security Watch, August 17,2006) While the emphasis is on the development of policies that lead tosuccessful prevention of terrorist attacks on the nation’sinfrastructure, this book is the first scientific study of criticalinfrastructures and their protection. The book models thenation’s most valuable physical assets and infrastructuresectors as networks of nodes and links. It then analyzes thenetwork to identify vulnerabilities and risks in the sectorcombining network science, complexity theory, modeling andsimulation, and risk analysis. The most critical components become the focus of deeper analysisand protection. This approach reduces the complex problem ofprotecting water supplies, energy pipelines, telecommunicationstations, Internet and Web networks, and power grids to a muchsimpler problem of protecting a few critical nodes. The new editionincorporates a broader selection of ideas and sectors and moves themathematical topics into several appendices.

✏Arizona Intelligent Vehicle Research Program Book Summary : This Phase One report documents a three-year research program by the Arizona Transportation Research Center to study possible practical applications of vehicle and infrastructure-based technologies. The project has reviewed, evaluated and demonstrated Intelligent Vehicle and Automated Highway System concepts that may improve the safety and efficiency of Arizona's highway system, particularly in winter maintenance operations. The key accomplishment of Phase One was to develop a research partnership with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in their Advanced Snowplow (ASP) program. The Caltrans prototype plow, guided by discrete magnetic markers in the roadway, features lane position indication, lane departure warning, and a forward collision warning radar system.

✏Human Operator autonomous Vehicle Interactions with System Bias and Transitions of Control Book Summary : Autonomous vehicles are considered the future of transportation. They offer several potential long-term benefits, including reduction in driving and navigation chores, enhanced mobility for individuals with disabilities, improved safety and decreases in traffic collisions, and reduced infrastructure costs. Currently, however, autonomous vehicle systems in development are still limited by their abilities to detect their surroundings, interpret sensory information, and fully navigate without human input. The human operator needs to both supervise the imperfect system and collaborate with it to navigate the driving environment. The research presented in this dissertation was aimed at better understanding human operator and autonomous vehicle interactions and how they affect system design and implementation. An immersive driving simulator was modified to develop experimental studies that analyzed interactions between the human operator and the autonomous vehicle system. The first part of this research focused on the inherent algorithmic biases present in designing autonomous vehicle systems, and the effects of changes in the system's sensitivity level and autonomy level were analyzed. The results show that a system biased towards lower sensitivity can improve operator vigilance and performance. The results further demonstrate that higher levels of autonomy in vehicles can result in reduced operator performance during potentially fatal events. Subsequent research focused on transitions of control from automation, in which the system hands control of the vehicle over to the human operator because there is a failure in the autonomous driving system. The effect of varying alert frequencies and levels of failure severity on the human operator's ability to successfully navigate a transition was analyzed. Significant differences in operator performance between the presence or lack of an alarm were observed, as well as the fact that an initial system failure's severity level did not seem to affect operator performance in a later failure event. Overall, the results of this work show that engineers and designers of autonomous vehicle systems need to consider a number of scenarios when specifying system actions and responses. This research provides a starting point for further exploration of the implications of system bias, particularly with varying levels of automation. It also provides insights that can help inform the design of transitions of control. A better understanding of human operator and autonomous vehicle interactions remains critical as vehicles with higher levels of automation become more prevalent on the road.

✏Recent International Activity in Cooperative Vehicle highway Automation Systems Book Summary : This report summarizes the current state of the art in cooperative vehicle-highway automation systems in Europe and Asia based on a series of meetings, demonstrations, and site visits, combined with the results of literature review. This review covers systems that provide drivers with a range of automation capabilities, from driver assistance to fully automated driving, with an emphasis on cooperative systems that involve active exchanges of information between the vehicles and the roadside and among separate vehicles. The trends in development and deployment of these systems are examined by country, and the similarities and differences relative to the U.S. situation are noted, leading toward recommendations for future U.S. action. The Literature Review on Recent International Activity in Cooperative Vehicle-Highway Automation Systems is published separately as FHWA-HRT-13-025.
