✏The Peripheral Book Summary : The New York Times bestselling author of Neuromancer and Agency presents a fast-paced sci-fi thriller that takes a terrifying look into the future... Flynne Fisher lives down a country road, in a rural America where jobs are scarce, unless you count illegal drug manufacture, which she’s trying to avoid. Her brother Burton lives on money from the Veterans Administration, for neurological damage suffered in the Marines’ elite Haptic Recon unit. Flynne earns what she can by assembling product at the local 3D printshop. She made more as a combat scout in an online game, playing for a rich man, but she’s had to let the shooter games go. Wilf Netherton lives in London, seventy-some years later, on the far side of decades of slow-motion apocalypse. Things are pretty good now, for the haves, and there aren’t many have-nots left. Wilf, a high-powered publicist and celebrity-minder, fancies himself a romantic misfit, in a society where reaching into the past is just another hobby. Burton’s been moonlighting online, secretly working security in some game prototype, a virtual world that looks vaguely like London, but a lot weirder. He’s got Flynne taking over shifts, promised her the game’s not a shooter. Still, the crime she witnesses there is plenty bad. Flynne and Wilf are about to meet one another. Her world will be altered utterly, irrevocably, and Wilf’s, for all its decadence and power, will learn that some of these third-world types from the past can be badass.

✏Surgical Disorders of the Peripheral Nerves Book Summary : Since the highly praised first edition of Surgical Disorders of the Peripheral Nerves was published in 1998, greater understanding of the the molecular and cellular events which underlie the response of nerves to injury, regeneration and neuropathic pain has been achieved. This second edition has been fully updated in line with new clinical knowledge, and also incorporates the extensive study of thousands of surgical case studies spanning repairs of the supraclavicular plexus in the adult, the birth lesion of the brachial plexus, compound nerve injury and iatrogenous injury. Beginning with the fundamentals of the anatomy and function of the peripheral nervous system, and working its way through various types of injury, operative methods, the regeneration and recovery of nerves, surgical reconstruction, pain, and rehabilitation, this eloquently written work provides the reader with the solid understanding required to successfully perform surgery on the peripheral nervous system. Dr Shelagh Smith, joined by Dr Ravi Knight, has rewritten the chapter Electrodiagnosis. Professor Tara Renton has written a new chapter on injuries to the trigeminal nerve in maxilla-facial and dental work. The drawings, by Mr Philip Wilson, are new. Most of the 700 illustrations are also new. This thorough and authoritative look at the surgical treatment of the peripheral nerves is fully illustrated throughout with exquisite line diagrams and clear, instructive photographs.

✏High Resolution Sonography of the Peripheral Nervous System Book Summary : Diagnostic sonography of the peripheral nervous system is an evolving specialty of musculoskeletal ultrasound. This book provides an in-depth description of sonographic examination technique - how to access an individual nerve with sonography and how to interpret local findings. A particular focus is on sonographic-anatomic correlations. All currently possible clinical applications are addressed, including the evaluation of nerve compression syndromes, traumatic lesions, tumors, and postoperative complications. The book contains a huge number of high-quality patient sonograms, all derived from cases with clinical and in many instances surgical correlation.

✏The Peripheral Mind Book Summary : The Peripheral Mind introduces a novel approach to a wide range of issues in the philosophy of mind by shifting the focus of analysis from the brain to the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS). Contemporary philosophy of mind has neglected the potential significance of the PNS and has implicitly assumed that, ultimately, sensory and perceptual experience comes together in the brain. István Aranyosi proposes a philosophical hypothesis according to which peripheral processes are considered as constitutive of sensory states rather than merely as causal contributors to them. Part of the motivation for the project is explained in the autobiographical opening chapter, which describes the author's subjective experiences with severe peripheral nerve damage. Although Aranyosi's approach could be classified as part of the current "embodied mind" paradigm in the philosophy of mind and cognitive neuroscience, this is the first time that notions like "embodiment" and "body" in general are replaced by the more focused concept of the PNS. Aranyosi puts the hypothesis to the test and offers novel solutions to puzzles related to physicalism, functionalism, mental content, embodiment, the extended mind hypothesis, tactile-proprioceptive illusions, as well as to some problems in neuroethics, such as abortion and requests for amputation of healthy body parts. The diversity of the volume's methodology--which results from a combination of conceptual analysis, discussion of neuroscientific data, philosophical speculation, and first-person phenomenological accounts--makes the book both engaging and highly informative.

✏Dominant Exudative Vitreoretinopathy and other Vascular Developmental Disorders of the Peripheral Retina Book Summary : Dominant exudative vitreoretinopathy (DEVR) is an eye disease which has only recently received wider attention. In 1969 Criswick and Schepens used the designation "familial exudative vitreoretinopathy" to describe a syndrome they observed in six patients belonging to two families. The condition was characterized by several symptoms involving the vitreous and retina, e. g. "posterior vitreous detachment, organized vitreous membranes, heterotopia of the macula, retinal neovascularizations, subretinal and intraretinal exudates, and localized retinal detachment". The clinical features impressed the authors as strongly reminiscent of retrolental fibroplasia, but none of the patients had a record of premature birth or postnatal oxygen administration. In 1971 Cow and Oliver described the same syndrome in several members of one family. They considered their findings to be compatible with auto somal dominant transmission. Canny and Oliver (I976) were the first to de monstrate the fluorescein-angiographic changes of DEVR in four members of the abovementioned family. The most striking finding was "abrupt cessation of the capillary network in a scaloped edge near the equator". Fluorescein was seen to leak from the retinal vessels localized in this marginal zone, and in some eyes from massive fibrovascular lesions as well. Similar fluorescein angiographic changes have been described in recent years in other reports on families with DEVR (Nijhuis et aI., 1979; Slusher and Hutton, 1979; Dudgeon, 1979; Ober et a1., 1980; Laqua, 1980). In 1979 I commenced a clinical study of this still little-known condition at the Nijmegen University Institute of Ophthalmology (The Netherlands).

✏The Peripheral Blood Film Book Summary : The Peripheral Blood Film, Second Edition presents the various concepts of the origin, development, and functions of blood cells. This book serves as a practical guide to the different types of film appearances that may be encountered in the routine examination of peripheral blood films. Organized into 14 chapters, this edition begins with an overview of the composition of plasma, which consists mainly of water and many organic and inorganic compounds. This text then discusses the process of obtaining capillary blood and explains how the thin blood film is prepared in the laboratory. Other chapters present the alphabetical listing of diseases, disorders, and abnormal film appearances for easier reference. This book discusses as well the characteristics of normal peripheral blood cells. The final chapter deals with the characteristics of blood film in various types of diseases, including Cushing's disease, Addison's disease, cirrhosis of the liver, and collagen disorders. This book is a valuable resource for hematologists and pathologists.

✏The Central and the Peripheral Book Summary : Representing reality in terms of secure, familiar centres and dangerous, lesser known peripheries is one of the most elementary human cognitive instincts. However, we live in a world where this established division is becoming more and more problematic. One person’s periphery can be another’s centre, and many simple geographies of the world and of the mind, clearly separating the known from the unknown, have become obsolete. How can one reconcile this complexity with the fact that human thinking cannot escape the centre/periphery dichotomy? How is it possible to find one’s way in a world in which peripheries become centres, and centres turn into peripheries? The chapters of this book try to determine how the problem of centres and peripheries has been dealt with in the domains of literature and culture. The contributors focus on different aspects of the issue – from travel writing, through attempts at mapping the self, to finding central and peripheral territories in narrative itself.

✏Nitric Oxide and the Regulation of the Peripheral Circulation Book Summary : Nitric oxide is involved in the regulation of the circulation in physiologic and pathophysiological conditions. Evidence indicates that alterations in endothelial production of nitric oxide may be involved in the pathogenesis of central hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, renal disease and coronary vasopastic disorders. In addition to being involved in regulation of the circulation in physiologic and pathophysiologic conditions, the inducible form of the enzyme may play a role in the refractory hypertension.

✏Biomicroscopy of the Peripheral Fundus Book Summary : It gives me particular pleasure to write the foreword to this book; this is largely due to the fact that I have devoted a substantial part of my life to the improve ment of the methods used in ophthalmic research. Rarely has one of my students taken the opportunity of dealing systematically with the possibilities of these methods. Dr. Eisner is, however, one of these exceptions. First, he has substantially improved the indentation contact glass; secondly, he has, with untiring enthusiasm, made a systematic collection of the normal and pathologic findings, which, with the help of the indentation contact glass and the slit lamp, can be observed in the outermost periphery of the fundus and the ciliary body. He has compared them to findings obtained with slight magnification in autopsy eyes and to histological sections. Owing to a fortunate circumstance, W. Hess, who is both an excellent draughts man and a master of the special examination technique, was able to reproduce the visual phenomena faithfully. The reader who tries to interpret these illustrations spatially will discover that this was often not easy. It is a process which requires a certain effort of imagi nation of space, but which is very rewarding. Dr. Eisner's monograph is an introduction to a little-known branch of biomicroscopy which broadens our means of diagnosis and promises further interesting aspects for the future. I wish him well-earned success.

✏Atlas of Anatomy of the peripheral nerves Book Summary : This book focuses on the anatomy of the peripheral nervous system. Using the latest 3D-computer graphic modeling techniques, the author developed the innovative NEURO 3D LOCATORTM concept, which provides 3D in-vivo ultrasound images of peripheral nerve architectures, allowing readers to develop a mental real-time 3D GPS of the peripheral nervous system. This new edition is an extended version of the “Student edition” dedicated to Experts and is divided into three main parts: The first part describes fundamental concepts, from immunohistochemistry to limb innervation, and includes a detailed evaluation of the morphofunctional anatomy of the peripheral nerves. It also presents relevant data on neuromuscular transmission, from both classic and recent literature, to enable readers to gain an understanding the physiology and pathology of peripheral nerves as well as the prospects of repair. The second section addresses the upper limb, the brachial plexus and related peripheral nerves, while the third section focuses on the lower limb, the lumbosacral plexus and related peripheral nerves. By providing MRI sections related to the drawings and the descriptions of main nerve injuries, it facilitates radiological interpretation and clinical learning. The book also features detailed descriptions of surgical approaches and the ultrasound anatomy of the limbs, and includes supplementary material on applications to peripheral nerve stimulation, surgical procedures and interventional pain medicine techniques. Presenting high-quality 3D videos showing the progression of the ultrasound probe in real-time, synchronized with live ultrasound views and enhanced with anatomical computerized graphic layers, as well as over 500 outstanding full-color 2D and 3D illustrations, and access to than 100 practical videos, this unique book is a valuable resource for anesthesiologists, radiologists, orthopedic surgeons, neurosurgeons, neuromodulators, physiatrists, pain physicians and rheumatologists. It will also appeal to the medical community in general.

✏The Peripheral Nerve Involvement in Parkinson Disease A Multifaceted Phenomenon Book Summary : Abstract: In the last decade the possible relationship between Parkinson's disease (PD) and peripheral neuropathy (PN) has received increasing attention. Given that PN is quite common in Parkinson's disease, much controversy has arisen on whether it is part of the neurogenerative process itself - actually one of the possible causes - or a complication of levodopa administration. In this article we will discuss the different hypotheses, as well as our perspective on these open issues. Highlights: The involvement of the peripheral nervous system in the context of Parkinson's Disease is a phenomenon with many facets. A peripheral neuropathy (PN) can be observed both in the early stages and advanced disease. The late-stage neuropathy is mainly axonal sensitive and is related to the chronic levodopa use. The PN detected in early or preclinical stages has intrinsic determinants and especially involves the enteric and olfactory nerves. Peripheral involvement could be an early step or, even, the gateway for the neurodegeneration before it spreads to the CNS.
