✏On the Causes of Economic Growth Book Summary : In a sweeping review of economic history, the author presents the salient facts of booms and slowdowns in the major economies of the world, in 50-year intervals and demonstrates the weakness of orthodox theories. The only factor that consistently causes growth, he shows, is centralized support for manufacturing, which spurs the creation of new technologies, which lead to wealth creation. Since the earliest of times, human beings have endeavored to uncover the causes of prosperity. Step by step, Sabillon tests the principal theories on the causes of economic growth against the facts of history. Here, economic statistics of the world are presented in a rationalized format that allows for comparison across countries and through time, with a challenge to those who study them to determine, with an open mind, what the statistics show and what are the trends -- beyond cherished theories that suit various political purposes. Tested against the historical data, textbook ideas and theories consistently come up short. Such analyses are highly troubling because they reveal an absence of correlation between theory and reality. The data, statistics illustrating the development of the world economy during the last several centuries, were extracted from economic, history and economic history books, from publications of the World Bank, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, the International Monetary Fund, the World Trade Organization, the United Nations specialized agencies, research institutes and country statistical publications, and other books and journals. Analyzing the data over geography and time, Sabillon concludes that contrary to contemporary wisdom, left to market forces alone the economy will not and does not flourish. Only decisive intervention in support of manufacturing and technological advancement can provide growth. This systematic review of history and test of accepted dogma challenges economic theorists to consider one part of the equation of economic policy that has been wiped off the blackboard in today s politically-correct debates.

✏The Lessons Of History Book Summary : With the armed forces of the People's Republic of China celebrating their 75th anniversary on August 1, 2002, it only seemed appropriate and timely to take stock of the world's largest military. The People's Liberation Army (PLA) has officially been in existence for three-quarters of a century, and its history is one filled with turmoil and warfare. One weekend in September 2002, a group of PLA specialists gathered at Carlisle Barracks, the home of the U.S. Army War College, to assess what lessons China's soldiers had drawn from the history of their own armed forces. This volume constitutes the final product of months of extensive research by the individual authors and hours of intense discussion at the 3-day conference by approximately 50 participants. The conference was sponsored jointly by the American Enterprise Institute, the Heritage Foundation, and the U.S. Army War College. It is with great pleasure that I commend this book to anyone with a serious interest in the Chinese military.

✏The Power of History Book Summary : Throughout their stellar careers, Will and Ariel Durant were often queried on what lessons history had to teach us. Their answers offer a unique window through which to better view the nature of man is brilliantly illuminated. The absolute best of these conversations have now been brought together in this volume, offering a profound insight into the Durant's lives, the creation of their greatest books and their own personal philosophy of life. The topics the Durants discuss are profoundly important today and represent the distilled wisdom of their more than half-century of scholarship in the history of the world and the ideas of man, including the lessons we can (and in some cases must) learn from history in the realms of: -Civilization -Earth -Biology -Race -Gender -Character -Morals -Religion -Government -Community -Time & Space -Art -War -Freedom -Justice -Growth & Decay -Progress -The meaning of history Also included are rare autobiographical insights into the Durant's personal life, revealed in profound and compelling dialogues in which they discuss with characteristic wit and fondness their early years together and the story of their love and marriage (which lasted 68 - until their deaths a mere two weeks apart in 1981), as well as the lessons learned from a life-long love affair with the world of ideas.

✏The Lessons of Terror Book Summary : In The Lessons of Terror, novelist and military historian Caleb Carr examines terrorism throughout history and the roots of our present crisis and reaches a provocative set of conclusions: the practice of targeting enemy civilians is as old as warfare itself; it has always failed as a military and political tactic; and despite the dramatic increases in its scope and range of weapons, it will continue to fail in the future. International terrorism—the victimization of unarmed civilians in an attempt to affect their support for the government that leads them—is a phrase with which Americans have become all too familiar recently. Yet while at first glance terrorism seems a relatively modern phenomenon, Carr illustrates that it has been a constant of military history. In ancient times, warring armies raped and slaughtered civilians and gratuitously destroyed property, homes, and cities; in the Middle Ages, evangelical Muslims and Christian crusaders spread their faiths by the sword; and in the early modern era, such celebrated kings as Louis XIV revealed a taste for victimizing noncombatants for political purposes. It was during the Civil War that Americans themselves first engaged in “total war,” the most egregious of the many euphemisms for the tactics of terror. Under the leadership of such generals as Stonewall Jackson, the forces of the South tried to systematize this horrifying practice; but it fell to a Union general, William Tecumseh Sherman, to achieve that dubious goal. Carr recounts Sherman’s declaration of war on every man, woman, and child in the South—a policy that he himself knew was badly flawed, had nothing to do with his military successes (indeed, it hampered them), and brought long-term unrest to the American South by giving birth to the Ku Klux Klan. Carr’s exploration of terror reveals its consistently self-defeating nature. Far from prompting submission, Carr argues, terrorism stiffens enemy resolve: for this reason above all, terrorism has never achieved—nor will it ever achieve—long-term success, however physically destructive and psychologically debilitating it may become. With commanding authority and the storyteller’s gift for which he is renowned, Caleb Carr provides a critical historical context for understanding terrorist acts today, arguing that terrorism will be eradicated only when it is perceived as a tactic that brings nothing save defeat to its agents.

✏Doomed to Repeat Book Summary : The essays in this collection examine the place of history in terrorism studies and in contemporary discussions on terrorism and counter-terrorism. This volume marks an effort by a group of scholars and practitioners to provide a justification for the better understanding of Terrorism's past and the importance of this past for today and tomorrow. The collection is divided into four sections. Section One places Terrorism Studies and the study of history in context and considers the connections between these fields of study. Section Two is written by non-historians and practitioners who have seen the importance of historical context and perspective in the understanding of current events. Section Three provides case studies that explore the history of terrorism and politically motivated violence. Section Four places concerns about terrorism in regional and foreign policy context. "This collection helps us advance our understanding of terrorism beyond simplistic and dichotomist assertions about "them" and "us." Taken together, these essays highlight the importance of analyzing, rather than assuming." -Chris Dixon, Professor, School of History, Philosophy, Religion, and Classics, The University of Queensland, Australia. "This collection could not come at a more opportune time given the current preoccupation in government with Terrorism... It will not only contribute substantially to the current scholarship on the subject, but will set a benchmark by which future researchers will have to measure themselves. It will, furthermore, become a reference for both students and experts in the field." -Philip Dwyer, Director, Social and Cultural Conflict Research Group, University of Newcastle, Australia. "In this volume, the subject matter ranges widely over the field including important contributions on some of the major areas of international conflict of the last twenty years. By paying attention to national, regional and international phenomena, this collection will provide access to a breadth of historical perspectives and approaches that is uncommon in this field of studies." -Mark Finnane, Professor, ARC Centre of Excellence in Policing and Security, Griffith University, Australia.

✏Lessons from the Past Book Summary : Because of the didactic nature of the historical genre, many scholars ancient and modern have seen connections between history and rhetoric. So far, discussion has centered on fifth-century authors -- Herodotus and Thucydides, along with the sophists and early philosophers. Pownall extends the focus of this discussion into an important period. By focusing on key intellectuals and historians of the fourth century (Plato and the major historians -- Xenophon, Ephorus, and Theopompus), she examines how these prose writers created an aristocratic version of the past as an alternative to the democratic version of the oratorical tradition. Frances Pownall is Professor of History and Classics, University of Alberta.

✏Preventive War and Its Alternatives Book Summary : The 2002 National Security Strategy suggested preventive attacks, diplomacy, deterrence, and other policies as means of curtailing threats presented by the spread of nuclear, biological, and chemical (NBC) weapons to terrorists and rogue states. The author analyzes which mix of these policies might best and most cost effectively address the NBC threat, with special focus on preventive attacks. The past performances of preventive attacks, diplomacy, deterrence, and other policies as means of curtailing the NBC threat are analyzed. The central findings are that preventive attacks are generally unsuccessful at delaying the spread of NBC weapons; that deterrence, especially nuclear deterrence, is highly successful at preventing the use of NBC weapons by states; and that diplomacy has had moderate and perhaps unappreciated success at curtailing the spread of NBC weapons. The author also discusses how funds spent on preventive wars, which are much more expensive than diplomacy or deterrence, might be better spent to combat threats from terrorism and proliferation, on initiatives such as fissile material recovery, ballistic missile defense, and port security.

✏The Lessons of Tragedy Book Summary : The ancient Greeks hard†‘wired a tragic sensibility into their culture. By looking disaster squarely in the face, by understanding just how badly things could spiral out of control, they sought to create a communal sense of responsibility and courage—to spur citizens and their leaders to take the difficult actions necessary to avert such a fate. Today, after more than seventy years of great†‘power peace and a quarter†‘century of unrivaled global leadership, Americans have lost their sense of tragedy. They have forgotten that the descent into violence and war has been all too common throughout human history. This amnesia has become most pronounced just as Americans and the global order they created are coming under graver threat than at any time in decades. In a forceful argument that brims with historical sensibility and policy insights, two distinguished historians argue that a tragic sensibility is necessary if America and its allies are to address the dangers that menace the international order today. Tragedy may be commonplace, Brands and Edel argue, but it is not inevitable—so long as we regain an appreciation of the world’s tragic nature before it is too late.

✏Heroes of History Book Summary : In the tradition of his own bestselling masterpieces The Story of Civilization and The Lessons of History, Pulitzer Prize–winning historian Will Durant traces the lives and ideas of those who have helped to define civilization, from its dawn to the beginning of the modern world. Heroes of History is a book of life-enhancing wisdom and optimism, complete with Durant's wit, knowledge, and unique ability to explain events and ideas in simple, exciting terms. It is the lessons of our heritage passed on for the edification and benefit of future generations—a fitting legacy from America's most beloved historian and philosopher. Will Durant's popularity as America's favorite teacher of history and philosophy remains undiminished by time. His books are accessible to readers of every kind, and his unique ability to compress complicated ideas and events into a few pages without ever "talking down" to the reader, enhanced by his memorable wit and a razor-sharp judgment about men and their motives, made all of his books huge bestsellers. Heroes of History carries on this tradition of making scholarship and philosophy understandable to the general reader, and making them good reading, as well. At the dawn of a new millennium and the beginning of a new century, nothing could be more appropriate than this brilliant book that examines the meaning of human civilization and history and draws from the experience of the past the lessons we need to know to put the future into context and live in confidence, rather than fear and ignorance.

Friedman, studies the contribution of the Naval War College, especially in the presidency of Admiral Raymond Spruance, to strategic thought during the first critical postwar years—that is, between the end of the war and the formulation of Containment. This transition period is especially valuable as a window through which to explore institutions such as the College in transition from a hot war to a cold one. While seminal studies exist of the College’s work in the interwar years, none have been published on this period.

✏Hurricane Katrina and the Lessons of Disaster Relief Book Summary : Hurricane Katrina, which hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, exposed the failings and incompetence of local, state, and federal officials, as well as the private sector and a host of other public and private agencies. This volume explores how inaction, lack of planning and undisguised greed insured that a category 3 hurricane would result in widespread destruction of both lives and property. It adopts a multifaceted approach to Hurricane Katrina, and includes studies from the fields of oral history, environmental science, physics, political science, sociology, and history. Part One provides first-hand accounts from people that lived through the hurricane and its aftermath. Part Two looks at how various entities responded, or failed to respond, to the disaster. Included in this section are articles on public health, tourism, environmental science, and the role of the Army Corp of Engineers. Part Three incorporates data from the aftermath of Katrina to suggest future responses to hurricanes and other natural/human made disasters. Finally, Harry Shearer, actor, radio host of Le Show, and director of The Big Uneasy, a documentary on Katrina and its aftermath, contributes an article on the various elements that went into the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina.
