✏Inverting the Pyramid Book Summary : 'One of the most revelatory sports books of the year' SCOTLAND ON SUNDAY 'Masterful ... it could be the best thing to have happened to English football in years' TIME OUT 'Gloriously readable, eccentric and informative' METRO In INVERTING THE PYRAMID, Jonathan Wilson pulls apart the finer details of the world's game, tracing the global history of tactics, from modern pioneers right back to the beginning when chaos reigned. Along the way, he looks at the lives of great players and thinkers who shaped the sport and probes why the English, in particular, have 'proved themselves unwilling to grapple with the abstract'. This fifth-anniversary edition of a football modern classic has been fully updated to include an investigation of the modern-day Barcelona and how their style of play developed from Total Football, which itself was an evolution of the Scottish passing game invented by Queens Park and taken on by Tottenham in the 1930s. It also analyses different styles in the early British game and the changing mentality of South American football in the 1970s, as well as looking at the birth of the 3-5-2 system so prevalent today.

✏The Inverting Pyramid Book Summary : Europe’s pension systems –among the most celebrated features of its social welfare model— face tremendous challenges. With only 11 percent of the world’s population, Europe spends about 60 percent of global outlays on social protection, largely in pensions. In many countries, pension rules have encouraged people to retire sooner, while enjoying longer lives. Payroll taxes on a continuously expanding contributory base have financed these benefits. This model of pension provision is now being severely tested as pension systems reach maturity, while the population is aging and the labor force is starting to shrink. Measures to enable a continued tradition of providing old age security will include • raising retirement ages such that pensions are provided in the last 15 years of life, when work capacity traditionally diminishes • encouraging immigration to help fill the declining work force • rationalizing pension spending, putting priority on preventing old age poverty, and • encouraging savings to help provide the more comfortable retirement that individuals have come to expect. Some measures may be more appropriate in particular countries than others, yet undertaking all of them will likely require less drastic changes in any one of them. The specific choices will need to be discussed and agreed among each country’s own population, and be accompanied by enabling changes in pension policy, tax policy, financial markets policy, and labor policy. The fundamental issue is that, with these changes, the important achievements of European social policy can withstand the demographic onslaught and continue to provide old age security for generations to come.

He's living with a fiery massage therapist and co-managing a website that investigates the inner workings of the media. At a conference in Seattle, Alex runs into an old friend--and flame--Media Studies Professor Camila Gray. But just as they begin to reconnect, Alex's business partner disappears, leaving Alex only one clue: the name of a hacker who was recently murdered in New York City. Alex and Camila travel to Alex's hometown, where they race to untangle a web of connections between the dead hacker, the disappearance of Alex's partner, and the death of Alex's parents seven years earlier. ✏The Inverted Pyramid Book Summary : 'The Inverted Pyramid' is a spy thriller that ingeniously explores the mind of its main character Zuby; while at the same time it reveals Nigeria's socio-political system with the aim of providing much needed answers to the many anomalies that exist in Nigerian society today. It gives an explanation both in political and economic terms for the slow rate of economic development, the very high level of corruption, and the apparent indifference of the Nigerian government to the economic plight of its people; amidst so much apparent wealth. It captures the Nigerian psyche explaining what we have all come to recognize as the 'Nigerian factor.' It also unveils a rare insight into the nuances of modern Nigerian society in which money, and sex play a pivotal role in the lives of the 'Vested Interest' who are the few who benefit from the status quo at the expense of the greater majority. An entertaining spy thriller with intrigue, espionage, and deception all captured within the cultural, social, and political backdrop of contemporary Nigeria.

✏Further Up the Inverted Pyramid Book Summary : This is the third of George Wilson’s fascinating explanations of his personal spiritual philosophy, first outlined in his previous books At Last I Know and Through the Doors of Time. The author interweaves his profound spiritual observations with recollections of his life, from childhood days in Motherwell to a career in heavy industry that took the author and his family wherever there was work, including Zambia and South Africa. These reminiscences are often humorous, though sometimes poignant and deeply moving. Reflecting on his profound observations and supporting them with references from the Bible, the author explains his theory on the nature of the human soul and its relationship with God. Personal tragedy has led to the author taking his lifelong belief in a benign supernatural force and eternal reincarnation to a greater depth, from where he has taken solace. George Wilson was born in Flemington, Scotland, and pursued a career in industry as a Comprehensive International Welding Inspector. He retired in 2003 and currently lives in South Africa.

✏Just the Facts Book Summary : In Critical Race Feminism, Anita Hill, Lani Guinier, Regina Austin, Patricia Williams, Emma Coleman Jordan (Anita Hill's lawyer) and over three dozen other women seek to ensure that their perspectives on race, power, law, and politics in America will never again be distorted or ignored. Revealing how the historical experiences and contemporary realities of women of color are profoundly influenced by a legacy of racism and sexism that is neither linear nor logical, the book offers a panoramic perspective on American women's lives, illustrating how women of color derive strength from oppression. Both a forceful statement and a platform, the volume addresses an ambitious range of subjects from life in the workplace, motherhood, and parenting to sexual harassment, the O.J. Simpson trial, and criminal justice. Extending beyond national borders, it also takes on such global issues as female genital mutilation with sensitivity and eloquence. In a foreword that discusses relations between black women and men in the wake of the Million Man March, Derrick Bell argues that there is a singular focus, and thus a unique power, in Critical Race Feminism that makes this anthology relevant for women and men of all colors.

✏The Inverted Pyramid Book Summary : Inverted Pyramid explores Canada's drift during WWI from a world of production to one based on finance, with all the attendant problems we are still enduring today. The novel offers a colourful account of British Columbia during this time through the history of two brothers -- Rod and Grove Norquay -- who belong to an old BC family. Rod hopes to build on the family's past success in forestry, but Grove, the older brother, takes the family's assets and invests them in finance -- with disastrous consequences. Even as the world declines into a post-war depression, Rod is forced to liquidate much of his family's timber holdings, but he remains hopeful that he and family, working with their own hands, will be able to make a good life for themselves -- even as the rest of the world totters into the horrors of modernity.

✏Made to Stick Book Summary : NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The instant classic about why some ideas thrive, why others die, and how to improve your idea’s chances—essential reading in the “fake news” era. Mark Twain once observed, “A lie can get halfway around the world before the truth can even get its boots on.” His observation rings true: Urban legends, conspiracy theories, and bogus news stories circulate effortlessly. Meanwhile, people with important ideas—entrepreneurs, teachers, politicians, and journalists—struggle to make them “stick.” In Made to Stick, Chip and Dan Heath reveal the anatomy of ideas that stick and explain ways to make ideas stickier, such as applying the human scale principle, using the Velcro Theory of Memory, and creating curiosity gaps. Along the way, we discover that sticky messages of all kinds—from the infamous “kidney theft ring” hoax to a coach’s lessons on sportsmanship to a vision for a new product at Sony—draw their power from the same six traits. Made to Stick will transform the way you communicate. It’s a fast-paced tour of success stories (and failures): the Nobel Prize-winning scientist who drank a glass of bacteria to prove a point about stomach ulcers; the charities who make use of the Mother Teresa Effect; the elementary-school teacher whose simulation actually prevented racial prejudice. Provocative, eye-opening, and often surprisingly funny, Made to Stick shows us the vital principles of winning ideas—and tells us how we can apply these rules to making our own messages stick. BONUS: This edition contains an excerpt from Chip Heath and Dan Heath's Switch.

✏The Drama of Russian Political History Book Summary : In his introduction, Alexander Obolonsky notes that Russian history and life are full of paradoxes, most of them rather sad. Why, he asks, have the Russians, who have not only been endowed by nature with enormous natural, human, and intellectual resources, but who have also developed a great literary and scientific heritage and made significant contributions to world civilization, proved unable to arrange the conditions of their own existence to realize their great potential? “What fundamental deficiency,” he wonders, “made this great anomaly possible?”Alexander Obolonsky has undertaken the formidable task of reinterpreting Russian history from the Time of Troubles and the reign of Ivan the Terrible to perestroika, glasnost, and the dismantling of the Soviet system under Gorbachev and Yeltsin. He seeks to understand the present and assess the social trends that will shape the future through a careful reconsideration of Russia’s past.In his sweeping analyses of historical trends, Obolonsky structures his analytic narrative around two opposed concepts–a system-centered understanding of social existence in which individuals are viewed as “cogs” functioning for the sake of the whole, and a liberal person-centered paradigm in which society seeks to promote the development of the individual.Obolonsky distrusts all monistic explanations, from Marxism and geopolitics to scientific and technological models. He prefers to utilize a variety of variables—ethical, economic, sociopsychological, cultural—to explain Russian history, presenting its course as a long-term and ongoing struggle between two competing models of life. Oblolonsky is neither a determinist nor a romantic. In his thought-provoking and historically grounded analysis, he challenges standard interpretations regarding Russia, the USSR, the role of political leaders, and the Russian people. Far from satisfied with Russia’s past, Obolonsky worries that Russia’s future will be tainted by the persistence of an anti-individualist mentality and attitudes shaped by centuries of autocratic rule and by a conservative mass consciousness rooted in Russian experience.Students of Russian history, politics, and culture, and also those interested in the broader issues of twentieth-century society will find this informative magnum opus of a senior Russian scholar insightful and thought-provoking.

✏Literary Journalism in the United States of America and Slovenia Book Summary : Slovenia is acquiring some literary journalism written by Slovene journalists and writers. Author Sonja Merljak Zdovc suggests that more Slovene writers should prefer literary journalism because nonfiction is based on truth, facts, and data and appeals more to readers interested in real world stories. The honest, precise, profound, and sophisticated voice of literary journalism is becoming increasingly good for newspaper circulation, as it reaches not just the mind but also the heart of the reader. Thus, the world of Slovene journalism should also take a turn towards the stylized literary journalism seen in the United States. There, journalists and writers realize that through literary journalism they could perhaps end a general decline of traditional print media by restoring to readers stories that uncover the universal struggle of the human condition.
