✏Camping s Forgotten Skills Book Summary : Camping out has changed considerably from the good old days of pine bough beds, bonfires and fresh-cut trail shelters. No longer is it ethical to shape the land to suit our whims. There are just too few wild places and too many of us. As an unfortu-nate result, the days of the wise old scoutmaster who could sniff a coming storm and rig a tight camp in a driving rain seems to have succumbed to the age of the tech-weenie. Skills have taken a back acre to equipment. It's important to have high tech equipment, but what if you can't afford it? What if you become separated from your stove in a capsize? What if a large tear develops in your tent in canyon country or a remote northern river? Are you prepared? Are your skills honed? Do you have the skills it takes to survive the mosquitoes, the rain, or the cold food in the event of a disaster?

✏The Forgotten Few Book Summary : In June 1950, No 77 Squadron RAAF was in Japan, packed up and ready to go home. Instead, they went to Korea, flying Mustang fighters as part of a UN force aiding South Korea fight invading communists from the north. Early flights helped hold the crucial Pusan Perimeter, after which they moved north to fight both the enemy and the deep cold of the Korean winter. When Chinese MiG-15 jet fighters entered the war the squadron re-equipped with twin-jet Meteors. The MiGs were controlled by Russian fighter experts who targeted the Meteors, driving them out of 'MiG Alley'. Adopting ground attack with rockets as their main role, they still fought MiGs, ending the war with a five-all draw. It was valuable but very dangerous work and squadron pilots faced a one in four chance of death or capture for much of the war. Their deeds warranted lasting fame. Instead, they became the Forgotten Few of a largely forgotten war; those who read this book will find they deserve better than that.

✏The Forgotten Half Revisited Book Summary : The 10 papers in this report review what the United States has accomplished for late-adolescents and young adults in the past decade since publication of "The Forgotten Half." The consensus from the 15 authors is that many developments have not been encouraging. "Today's Forgotten Half: Still Losing Ground" (Samuel Halperin), a review of demographic and economic data, paints a generally discouraging picture of noncollege youth losing ground on a host of social and economic indexes. "Public Opinion and the Youth of America" (Daniel Yankelovich) sees the balance among important trends shifting toward the negative in education, governmental responses, moral values, and public attitudes toward youth. "The Changing American Family" (Carol Emig) examines how conditions and circumstances have changed for the American family. "Communities: Powerful Resources for America's Youth" (Martin J. Blank, Carol Steinbach) highlights initiatives at the community level that are of positive consequence for improving the lives of The Forgotten Half. "Youth and School Reform: From the Forgotten Half to the Forgotten Third" (Jack Jennings, Diane Stark Rentner) reports that more students do not end their education after high school, but those left behind face a bleaker future. "Postsecondary Education: Student Success, Not Just Access" (Lawrence E. Gladieux, Watson Scott Swail) argues the key to success is completion of postsecondary studies. "Preparing Youth for the World of Work" (Thomas Bailey, Vanessa Smith Morest) concludes that no strategy or policy change has caused a broad, consistent national movement. "Ten Years of Youth in Service to America" (Shirley Sagawa) focuses on development of service opportunities for students and young people. "Reflections on a Decade of Promoting Youth Development" (Karen Pittman, Merita Irby) offers suggestions to strengthen the insights and thrust of the youth development movement. "On the Horizon: America's Youth Face the New Century" (Harold Howe II) describes two main tasks to complete the youth agenda. A summary of the report is included. (YLB)
