✏Communication Public Discourse and Road Safety Campaigns Book Summary : This book discusses the use of communication campaigns to promote road safety, arguing that they need to elicit public discourse on issues pertaining to culture, equity, gender, workplace norms, environmental issues, and social solidarity. Increasingly, new media channels and formats are employed in the dissemination process, making road safety-related messages ubiquitous, and often controversial. Policy makers, educators, researchers, and the public continue to debate the utility and morality of some of the influence tactics employed in these messages, such as the use of graphic images of injury or death, stigmatization (or "blame and shame"), and the use of "black humor." Guttman argues that influencing road safety requires making changes in normative and cultural conceptions of broader issues in society, yet the typical discourse on road safety tends to focus on individual attitudes and practices. The book highlights the importance of social and behavioral theory in communication campaigns on road safety, and critiques the tendency to focus on individual cognition, affect, and risk conceptions rather than on normative, structural, and cultural factors. The volume positions the discourse on road safety as a social issue, and treats road safety behavior as a social activity that directly relates to other public issues, social values, and social policy, while discussing potential uses of social media and participatory approaches. The discussion turns to the role of road safety communication campaigns as part of a democratic process of eliciting public discourse, including how contemporary society could address broader issues of risk and safety.

✏News on the Internet Book Summary : Online news sites play an ever-pervasive role in the daily gathering and flow of political information. Media has always played an intermediary role in the way that citizens receive and process news, but, with the speed of information transmission, the segmentation of news sources, and the rise of citizen journalism, issues of authority, audience, and even the definition of "news" have shifted and become blurred. News on the Internet synthesizes research on developing and current patterns of online news provision with the literature on traditional, offline media to create a conceptual map for understanding the way that public affairs and news are presented and consumed on the internet. Tewksbury and Rittenberg look at the dual role of the internet as a source of authoritative news and as a vehicle for citizens in contemporary democracies to create and share political information. Throughout, they address the tension between the benefits of internet news provision, specifically increased citizen engagement, and the negative, perhaps counterintuitive, effects: the fragmentation of knowledge and polarization of opinion in contemporary democracies. News on the Internet focuses on these points of conflict and contradiction in the online news environment and offers conclusions and predictions for how these phenomena will develop in the future.

✏Risk Perception and Outreach Intervention Evaluation Associated with Human black Bear Interactions Book Summary : In many areas where people and black bears coexist, negative interactions are increasing in frequency and magnitude. Reducing the risks associated with human-black bear conflict is an important goal for diverse stakeholders. This research identified factors influencing perceived risk associated with human-black bear conflict and used this information to implement and evaluate an outreach intervention designed to change residential bear-related behavior and reduce conflict. Semi-structured interviews (N = 54) were conducted with Adirondack Park campground stakeholders in 7 campgrounds during summer 2003. Nine risk perception constructs were found salient to human-black bear conflict in campgrounds: control, agents, trust, frequency, dread, environment, seriousness, responsiveness, and volition. Two factor groups: agency capacity (agents, trust, responsiveness) and individual capacity (volition, seriousness, frequency) were deduced using principle axis factoring. Three constructs were congruent between campground stakeholder groups (agents, trust, frequency). This information informed the design, implementation and evaluation of a black bear-related outreach intervention. Based on Elaboration Likelihood Model of persuasive communication, the New York NeighBEARhood Watch (NYNW) pilot program aimed to change 6 residential human behaviors (i.e., bird feeding, pet feeding, composting, garbage storage, grill storage, hobby farming) and reduce human-black bear conflict. A quasi-experimental control group design with pre- and post-program samples was employed for data sets (i.e., voluntary mail survey (N = 5600), secondary data about 6 annual environmental factors over 10 years. A town-level analysis concluded one behavior, composting, decreased after the NYNW pilot program. Respondents' perceived acceptability and likelihood of bear-related risks (e.g., risk perception) changed in magnitude; fewer respondents strongly agreed that risks were acceptably low and unlikely. Willingness to change behavior proved to be a key antecedent to bear-related risk perception and behavior change. Only peripherally-based materials (i.e., billboard, bear-o-meter, lawn sign, magnet) influenced respondents' bear-related behavior change. This research deepens understanding about risk perception, an important component of anticipating the effectiveness and impact of various human-related wildlife management and conservation strategies. Further, this research offers insight into the efficacy of outreach interventions to modify human behavior and reduce human-black bear conflict.
