✏Why Distance Learning Book Summary : Despite significant investment in computer-based learning in higher education, there is a dearth of current research on administrative strategies for its effective use. Drawing from a national survey of higher education institutions and interviews with administrators, this book addresses key issues of distance learning: Why are higher education institutions pursuing such ventures? How are administration and management practices affected by these motivations? How should universities address the difficult administrative questions raised by distance learning? Despite significant investment in computer-based learning in higher education, there is a dearth of current research on administrative strategies for its effective use. Drawing from a national survey of higher education institutions and interviews with administrators, this book addresses key issues of distance learning: Why are higher education institutions pursuing such ventures? How are administration and management practices affected by these motivations? How should universities address the difficult administrative questions raised by distance learning? This book explores explicit motivations, focusing on access and a belief in the pedagogical advantages of this approach to higher education. The survey reveals that top university and continuing education administrators are more than twice as likely to lead the implementation push than individual faculty. The study also found that the core of distance learning is administratively housed in self-supporting continuing education units, and that the majority of respondents pay full-time faculty under a regular load arrangement for these courses--with no additional stipend for course development. Controversial findings involving issues of intellectual property and the different attitudes of community colleges and doctoral degree-granting institutions toward distance learning are also covered.

✏The Distance Learning Playbook for College and University Instruction Book Summary : First, let’s commend ourselves: how in the midst of a pandemic we faculty stepped up at record speed to teach in such a foreign learning environment. Try we did, adapt we did, and learn we did. But to be clear, and we already recognize this, this past spring was less about distance learning and more about crisis teaching. This time around we have the opportunity to be much more purposeful and intentional, and that’s where The Distance Learning Playbook for College and University Instruction will prove absolutely indispensable. Much more than a collection of cool tools and apps, The Distance Learning Playbook for College and University Instruction mobilizes decades of Visible Learning® research to reveal those evidence-based strategies that work best in an online environment. Supplemented by video footage and opportunities to self-assess and reflect, the book addresses every dynamic that must be in place for students to learn, even at a distance: Faculty-student relationships from a distance Teacher credibility from a distance Teacher clarity from a distance Engaging tasks from a distance Planning learning experiences from a distance Feedback, assessment, and grading from a distance Keeping the focus on learning, from a distance or otherwise What does our post-COVID future hold? “We suspect,” Fisher, Frey, Almarode, and Hattie write, “it will include increased amounts of distance learning. In the meantime, let’s seize on what we have learned to improve post-secondary education in any format, whether face-to-face or from a distance.” “We are all still active faculty members, committed to teaching, scholarship, and service. The unexpected transition to remote learning doesn’t mean we no longer know how to teach. We can still impact the lives of our students and know that we made a difference. The Distance Learning Playbook for College and University Instruction will show you how.” ~Douglas Fisher, Nancy Frey, John Almarode, and John Hattie

✏The Next Generation of Distance Education Book Summary : The world of education is being radically altered with the change being driven by technology, openness, and unprecedented access to knowledge. Older correspondence-style methods of instructional delivery are passé and “classroom adapted to the web” approaches to learning are often ineffective and do little to harness the transformational potential of technology. E-Learning scenarios, mobile technologies, communication and information access, and personal learning environments are becoming mainstream and, as a result, control of the learning process is shifting away from institutions and into the hands of learners. This volumes promotes a forward-thinking agenda for research and scholarship that highlights new ideas, deep insights, and novel approaches to “unconstrained” learning.

✏Evaluation of the distance learning systems in Turkey Book Summary : Education is one of the most important complement for people from the beginning of humanity. With the globalizing and fasten world, Distance Learning has gain an increasing importance. Especially, information technologies increase the spread and importance of the distance learning systems. Institutions and universities have started using distance learning systems day by day to reach the potential students from all over the world. Distance learning systems also decrease the costs of both institutions and students with effective learning way. Distance learning systems principally have four main supplements; cost, technology, education and distance learning related supplements. Due to its structure, the most important supplement of distance learning systems is technology–based components which contains various and complicated details. Most of these details looks totally technical but they are more important actually, because of their implementation to education, and connection with the people using the system. The main motivation of this book is to find out the most important components of distance learning systems in Turkey and prioritize them to lead the distance learning systems more effective and better, both for the students and for the investors. knowledge Within the current literature, none of the studies analyzed all components and prioritize them for both Turkey and in general, especially, educational components and technological components together. With the help of the advanced internet and digital technology, this is a challenging subject for the distance learning systems in today’s world. Educational institutions cannot promote their distance learning programs only with their instructors or course contents anymore like decades ago when the technology is much worse than now. Classical promotion materials do not take attention of the new generation who are digital natives. Because, they have already known how to access something or use technology, at least more than digital immigrants. Especially with the accessible technology and accessible reputed education contents with this technology all around the world, we should observe the importance of education and distance learning components together with technology components. In today’s World, if students want to access a distance learning system, they need only a computer and an internet access, excluding course cost. So, students can access to any distance learning system from all around the world easily. This situation is also valid for distance learning institutions. Similarly, this is valid for distance learning institutions. They can hire anybody from all around the world without bringing them to the institution with a perfect information technologies infrastructure. Investors of distance learning systems and institutions in Turkey should invest in and improve distance learning systems according to the importance of all components of distance learning systems together to get ahead of the world.

✏Teaching and Learning at a Distance Book Summary : Teaching and Learning at a Distance is written for introductory distance education courses for preservice or inservice teachers, and for training programs that discuss teaching distant learners or managing distance education systems. This text provides readers with the basic information needed to be knowledgeable distance educators and leaders of distance education programs. The teacher or trainer who uses this book will be able to distinguish between appropriate uses of distance education. In this text we take the following themes: The first theme is the definition of distance education. Before we started writing the first edition of Teaching and Learning at a Distance we carefully reviewed the literature to determine the definition that would be at the foundation of our writing. This definition is based on the work of Desmond Keegan, but is unique to this book. This definition of distance education has been adopted by the Association for Educational Communications and Technology and by the Encyclopedia Britannica. The second theme of the book was the importance of research to the development of the contents of the book. The best practices presented in Teaching and Learning at a Distance are validated by scientific evidence. Certainly there are “rules of thumb”, but we have always attempted to only include recommendations that can be supported by research. The third theme of Teaching and Learning at a distance is derived from Richard Clark’s famous quote published in the Review of Educational Research that states that media are mere vehicles that do not directly influence achievement. Clark’s controversial work is discussed in the book, but is also fundamental to the book’s advocacy for distance education – in other words, we authors did not make the claim that education delivered at a distance was inherently better than other ways people learn. Distance delivered instruction is not a “magical” approach that makes learners achieve more. The fourth theme of the book is equivalency theory. Here we presented the concept that instruction should be provided to learners that is equivalent rather than identical to what might be delivered in a traditional environment. Equivalency theory helps the instructional designer approach the development of instruction for each learner without attempting to duplicate what happens in a face to face classroom. The final theme for Teaching and Learning at a Distance is the idea that the book should be comprehensive – that it should cover as much of the various ways instruction is made available to distant learners as is possible. It should be a single source of information about the field.
