✏The Day the Crayons Came Home Book Summary : The companion to the #1 blockbuster bestseller, The Day the Crayons Quit! “Highly anticipated (yes, even for adults)” —Entertainment Weekly I'm not sure what it is about this kid Duncan, but his crayons sure are a colorful bunch of characters! From Maroon Crayon, who was lost beneath the sofa cushions and then broken in two after Dad sat on him; to poor Turquoise, whose head is now stuck to one of Duncan's stinky socks after they both ended up in the dryer together; to Pea Green, who knows darn well that no kid likes peas and who ran away—each and every crayon has a woeful tale to tell and a plea to be brought home to the crayon box. ✏Teaching Evidence Based Writing Fiction Book Summary : One in a million. Yes, that’s how rare it is to have so many write-about-reading strategies so beautifully put to use. Each year Leslie Blauman guides her students to become highly skilled at supporting their thinking about texts, and in Evidence-Based Writing: Fiction, she shares her win-win process. Leslie combed the ELA standards and all her favorite books and built a lesson structure you can use in two ways: with an entire text or with just the excerpts she’s included in the book. Addressing Evidence, Character, Theme, Point of View, Visuals, Words and Structure, each section includes: Lessons you can use as teacher demonstrations or for guided practice, with Best the Test tips on how to authentically teach the skills that show up on exams with the texts you teach. Prompt Pages serve as handy references, giving students the key questions to ask themselves as they read any text and consider how an author’s meaning and structure combine. Excerpts-to-Write About Pages feature carefully selected passages from novels, short stories, and picture books you already know and love and questions that require students to discover a text’s literal and deeper meanings. Write-About-Reading Templates scaffold students to think about a text efficiently by focusing on its critical literary elements or text structure demands and help them rehearse for more extensive responses. Writing Tasks invite students to transform their notes into a more developed paragraph or essay with sufficiently challenging tasks geared for grades 6-8. And best of all, your students gain a confidence in responding to complex texts and ideas that will serve them well in school, on tests, and in any situation when they are asked: What are you basing that on? Show me how you know.

✏Insane Euphoria Speaks Book Summary : Insane Euphoria Speaks: Diary of a Late Pregnancy is one woman's account of her third pregnancy from May 1971 through March 1972. When she first suspects that she is pregnant, she wonders what her husband's reaction might be. Should she or should she not have a third child? In her deepest self, she feels that she would like the profound natural happiness of being pregnant once again. At the same time, she wonders if she and her husband have both the emotional and financial resources to provide for a third child. The narrator tries to balance the anticipated euphoria of the experience against the very substantial demands of a third child. This will be the last pregnancy because she will be thirty-nine years old in two months. The positive side is that she is emotionally and psychologically ready for the experience and expects that she can make it into something more wonderful than her first two pregnancies had been. She served her motherhood apprenticeship with her first two children, and the third time around, she can appreciate her hard-won expertise. She realizes that she will be able to enjoy a mastery of the motherhood experience akin to the professional mastery she enjoyed before motherhood. An added plus to the third pregnancy is that she will be able to keep a journal, something she wanted to do with her first two pregnancies but was never sufficiently in control to do so. Her decision to continue the pregnancy is supported by her husband's enormous happiness at the prospect of a third child. The narrator records both the resources and the limitations of her current situation. She wants the pregnancy to be a beautiful experience and contain all that her previous two pregnancies lacked. She feels she knows what to expect from the experience, and this makes a significant difference. She likes the house where she lives and is grateful for the view of the hill and field across the street from her living room window. This is her relaxing view, her contact with nature and the eternal. The limitations of her situation are the lack of any household or babysitting help and the resulting acute need for some private time to herself. Having been an independent professional woman before she had children, she finds being a full-time at-home mother and an economic dependent a limiting and, sometimes, demeaning experience. There are fluctuations in her relationship with her husband and negotiations about power and money in their everyday life. The relationship is tugged one way by his wanting her to go back to work and the other way by her wanting him to expand his professional practice. The narrator tries to keep anything from marring the enjoyment of her third and final pregnancy. She wants to experience all the pleasure possible. She finds this a time of psychic integration where the discordant elements of her personality are integrated and present more and deeper meaning than she had previously known. The baby moves for the first time, she witnesses her two-year-old learn to talk, and her three-year-old start nursery school. His family, her family, and their friends form a chorus in the background. She experiences increasing dreaminess while she enjoys keeping a journal and, at one point, rereading some of her earlier journals. In the end, it culminates in the birth of a beautiful healthy baby girl.

✏Japanese Lessons Book Summary : Gail R. Benjamin reaches beyond predictable images of authoritarian Japanese educators and automaton schoolchildren to show the advantages and disadvantages of a system remarkably different from the American one... --The New York Times Book Review Americans regard the Japanese educational system and the lives of Japanese children with a mixture of awe and indignance. We respect a system that produces higher literacy rates and superior math skills, but we reject the excesses of a system that leaves children with little free time and few outlets for creativity and self-expression. In Japanese Lessons, Gail R. Benjamin recounts her experiences as a American parent with two children in a Japanese elementary school. An anthropologist, Benjamin successfully weds the roles of observer and parent, illuminating the strengths of the Japanese system and suggesting ways in which Americans might learn from it. With an anthropologist's keen eye, Benjamin takes us through a full year in a Japanese public elementary school, bringing us into the classroom with its comforting structure, lively participation, varied teaching styles, and non-authoritarian teachers. We follow the children on class trips and Sports Days and through the rigors of summer vacation homework. We share the experiences of her young son and daughter as they react to Japanese schools, friends, and teachers. Through Benjamin we learn what it means to be a mother in Japan--how minute details, such as the way mothers prepare lunches for children, reflect cultural understandings of family and education. ✏A Search for the Motherline Book Summary : In A Search for the Motherline, the narrator, an at-home mother of three young children, deals with the problems of life in a development from 1974 to 1975. While her husband copes with the problems of a modern dental practice, the narrator deals with house and children. She faces the trauma of coping with a difficult middle child, an unplanned pregnancy, and the husband pressuring her to find a job. She searches for balance between the demands of children and husband and her own interests as a person. She looks forward to a future of writing, a return to her career in librarianship, and the opportunity of training as a Jungian analyst. ✏The Indian Tipi Book Summary : When the first edition of this book was published in 1957, the art of making a tipi was almost lost, even among American Indians. Since that time a tremendous resurgence of interest in the Indian way of life has occurred, resurgence due in part, at least, to the Laubins' life-long efforts at preservation and interpretation of Indian culture. As The Indian Tipi makes obvious, the American Indian is both a practical person and a natural artist. Indian inventions are commonly both serviceable and beautiful. Other tents are hard to pitch, hot in summer, cold in winter, poorly lighted, unventilated, easily blown down, and ugly to boot. The conical tipi of the Plains Indian has none of these faults. It can be pitched by one person. It is roomy, well ventilated at all times, cool in summer, well lighted, proof against high winds and heavy downpours, and, with its cheerful fire inside, snug in the severest winter weather. Moreover, its tilted cone, trim smoke flaps, and crown of poles, presenting a different silhouette from every angle, form a shapely, stately dwelling even without decoration. In this new edition the Laubins have retained all the invaluable aspects of the first edition, and have added a tremendous amount of new material on day-to-day living in the tipi: the section on Indian cooking has been expanded to include a large number and range of Indian foods and recipes, as well as methods of cooking over an open fire, with a reflector oven, and with a ground oven; there are new sections on making buckskin, making moccasins, and making cradle boards; there is a whole new section on child care and general household hints. Shoshoni, Cree, and Assiniboine designs have been added to the long list of tribal tipi types discussed. This new edition is richly illustrated with color and black and white photographs, and drawings to aid in constructing and living in the tipi. It is written primarily for the interested amateur, and will appeal to anyone who likes camping, the out-of-doors, and American Indian lore.

With one bag of food at my door I fed my kids for a week, we were literally without a dime. My strength and willful confidence kept us going and my children believed in me, that was what kept us alive. Today I can honestly say- Ive come a long way.

✏The Ears at the Top of the Stairs Book Summary : Tom and Rita Parker got married 8 years ago and bought a small house in the suburbs. They had 2 cars, 2 TVs, 2 computers, and each worked, he as a mechanic, she as a part-time school teacher. After 3 years, they decided it was time to start a family and that is when Rosie came along. Now Rosie was named after Ritas great aunt and Tom argued against the name as hard as he could. He stated he was afraid she would be stuck with the unfortunate name of Nosy Parker throughout her life. But Rita was extremely fond of her aunt and said the last time she heard the Nosy Parker insult was about 25 years ago so eventually Tom gave in. I should say at this time that the Parkers married rather late in life and by the time Rosie was born, Tom was 38 and Rita was 35 and each was rather set in their ways. They both doubted they would have any more children so they vowed to do their best with their new daughter.
