📒The Conquest Of Fear Basil King ✍ Basil King
✏The Conquest of Fear Basil King Book Summary : A passage from the book... here are many books which give some help to many people. There are books which give a set of rules, or even one master rule, by which to meet the problems of life. This is not such a book. It suggests no simple recipe for the conquest of fear. Instead, it presents, what all too few of us to-day possess, a philosophy of life. Moreover, in contrast to the dominant thinking of our age, which is materialistic, King's philosophy is spiritual and religious. Indeed, the ideas in this book are so profoundly different from the commonly accepted ideas of our times that they will come as a shock to many readers. One purpose of this introduction is to prepare the reader for such a shock.I have said that the dominant thinking of our age is materialistic, and by that I mean also physical. Let me illustrate this broad statement with reference to the subject of fears alone. The conquest of fear has gone on year after year chiefly through physical means.

📒Strike Fear In The Land ✍ W. George Lovell
✏Strike Fear in the Land Book Summary : The conquest of Guatemala was brutal, prolonged and complex, fraught with intrigue and deception, and not at all clear-cut. Yet views persist of it as an armed confrontation whose stakes were evident and whose outcomes were decisive, especially in favor of the Spaniards. A critical reappraisal is long overdue, one that calls for us to reconsider events and circumstances in the light of not only new evidence but also keener awareness of indigenous roles in the drama. While acknowledging the prominent role played by Pedro de Alvarado (1485–1541), Strike Fear in the Land reexamines the conquest to give us a greater appreciation of indigenous involvement in it, and sustained opposition to it. Authors W. George Lovell, Christopher H. Lutz, and Wendy Kramer develop a fresh perspective on Alvarado as well as the alliances forged with native groups that facilitated Spanish objectives. The book reveals, for instance, that during the years most crucial to the conquest, Alvarado was absent from Guatemala more often than he was present; he relied on his brother, Jorge de Alvarado, to act in his stead. A pact with the Kaqchikel Maya was also not nearly as solid or long-lived as previously thought, as Alvarado’s erstwhile allies soon turned against the Spaniards, fomenting a prolonged rebellion. Even the story of the K’iche’ leader Tecún Umán, hailed in Guatemala as a national hero who fronted native resistance, undergoes significant revision. Strike Fear in the Land is an arresting saga of personalities and controversies, conveying as never before the turmoil of this pivotal period in Mesoamerican history.

📒Nectar 29 ✍ Babaji Bob Kindler
✏Nectar 29 Book Summary : With a reverence for the universality of all religions, SRV Associations, under the auspice of its Chosen Ideals, Sri Ramakrishna, Sri Sarada Devi, and Swami Vivekananda, offers its 29th issue of Nectar of Nondual Truth into the world-wide community of truth seekers everywhere. The purpose is twofold: first, that religion aligned with philosophy get disseminated and become available to humanity in this trouble-prone day and age; second, that through this divine dispensation, the principle of Universality — the truth of all religions — gets propagated as well. For, as we often say in SRV Loka, “There is no such thing as a foreign religion; all religions are indigenous to your soul.” To this fine end, then, we are to laud and applaud all Nectar contributors towards this singular principle, writers and spiritual leaders from both different walks of life, and from various traditions as well. They are fine examples of the potential of a people united in a world of beings and societies who only grant lip-service to such high-minded causes, but seldom follow through in action and in realization. As Swami Vivekananda has pleaded, “When will man finally be friend to man?”

We offer here a selection of lectures the Swami delivered during his time at the Vedanta Society of Portland.
📒Sixty Days With Luke ✍ Larry Althouse
✏Sixty Days with Luke Book Summary : The purpose of this book is to help the reader to spend sixty rewarding days in the Third Gospel, following a schedule of readings taking the reader through Lukes 24 chapters. All too often the Gospels are experienced in bits and pieces. This book will expose the reader to the whole Gospel of Luke, providing a fuller sense of the scope and continuity of this marvelous tract of faith. The daily interpretations are intended, not as exhaustive expositions of all that is intended by the various passages, but as meditations, suggestive of contemplation, musing, pondering, reflection, study or thought,. With each days reading and meditation, there is a daily suggestion of a thought to ponder and prime the pump of the readers own mind and heart. Stimulated by these thoughts and questions, readers may find the Holy Spirit leading them to what is important and relevant for their own lives. Each day ends with a prayer-starter intended to suggest the direction in which the readers own prayers might be directed. No Amen is added because they are intended to be open-ended for the reader to complete. The study and prayer sections are equally important.
📒Nectar 11 ✍ Babaji Bob Kindler
✏Nectar 11 Book Summary : “V” is for Victory! In Vedanta, and in spiritual life per se, this equates to achieving success in maintaining the intimate and singularly meaninglful contact with Brahman, the Source of all Existence — even and especially in the midst of our daily life and routine. This is effectively brought about, as the timeless rishi, Vasishtha, relates, through mastery of the life-force (pranajaya), control of the mind (manojaya), attenuation of desires (vasanakshaya), and neutralization of karmas (karma-nirodha) — all penultimate to acquiring that special ability to focus upon Divine Reality to the exclusion of all else (samadhana) until the consummate inner connection (samadhi) is well-established. For this, it is necessary for the two forces of human aspiration and Divine Dispensation to work harmoniously together. To facilitate this in the timeless and time-tested Vedic tradition, advised and available to all, the aspirant utilizes Vedanta (the eternal path) to activate Vichara (self-inquiry) to increase Viveka (discrimination) to deconstruct Vivarta (false superimposition) to remove Vikalpas (mental projections) and destroy Vasanas (root desires) in order to establish Vairagyam (detachment) to become a Vidvan (wisdom-knower) and attain Vijnana (supreme realization). Thus, “V” is for Victory! With such salubrious teachings well-considered, we offer our current helping of Wisdom-Nectar, mainly of or based on the Vedanta. In past issues we have highlighted many of the world’s religions, thereby rendering heartfelt service to the excellent principle of Universality and the harmony of all religions; a timely theme, considering the state of the world and its affairs. But we, as Westerners — videlicet, temporarily embodied souls appearing in a Western setting but espousing no personal or permanent location other than the all-pervasive Atman — feel an inborn affinity with the timeless and eternal Vedanta and feel it has an especial message suited for these times. We thereby and herein emphasize it in a series of intriguing and galvanizing articles designed to preserve yet percolate our precious consciousness, keeping it pure and pellucid.
