✏The Butterflies of Canada Book Summary : Beautifully illustrated and clearly presented, The Butterflies of Canada is an indispensable guide to all aspects of butterfly study. Butterfly collecting has long been a popular summer activity, and as the growing popularity of butterfly watching and conservatories in Ontario and British Columbia shows, butterflies are a continuing source of delight and interest to Canadians. The Butterflies of Canada is the first comprehensive guide to all the butterflies found in Canada. Based on the national butterfly collection maintained by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, it contains descriptive individual accounts for the close to three hundred butterfly species recorded in Canada, including descriptions of early stages, subspecies, and key features that help distinguish similar species. Each species of butterfly has an individual distribution map, generated from a database of more than 90,000 location records. More than just a field guide to identifying Canadian butterflies, however, The Butterflies of Canada includes chapters on Canadian geography and butterfly distribution, conservation, gardening, photography, and the history of butterfly study in Canada. It also contains new and unpublished information on the classification of butterflies, their ranges, larval food plants, abundance, flight seasons, and noteworthy habits. Thirty two colour plates provide diagnostic details for each species, and also feature butterflies in their natural habitats. There is an extensive bibliography.

✏The Butterflies and Moths of Canada Book Summary : (LARGE PRINT EDITION) With Descriptions Of Their Color, Size, And Habits, And The Food And Metamorphosis Of Their Larvae. Alexander Milton Ross, Canadian physician, abolitionist, author, naturalist, and reformer, was born on December 23, 1832, in Belleville, Upper Canada (Ontario). A considerable part of his life was spent in the United States, and he died in Detroit, Michigan, on October 27, 1897, at the age of 65 years. Ross basically was an idealist, who with intense energy and dedication promoted causes in which he aligned himself. He graduated from the College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City in 1855. Ross spent the next ten years promoting the abolition movement in the northern and southern states of the United States and in Canada, a devotion that he pursued until the Civil War. Ross traveled widely and reportedly befriended William Cullen Bryant, Abraham Lincoln, John Brown, Giuseppe Garibaldi, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Henry Wadswoth Longfellow, and John Greenleaf Whittier. He served, apparently unofficially, as President Lincoln's informant on abolition activities in Canada during 1864. On his return to Canada in 1865, Ross became an avid collector of natural history specimens. The Butterflies and Moths of Canada... (1873) followed The Birds of Canada... (1871), but neither of his planned books on the ferns nor wild flowers were released despite being advertised as "in press." Ross was elected a Fellow of the Linnaean Society of London and of the British Association for the Advancement of Science.--Henry M. Reeves.

This usable guide provides sizes, shapes, color patterns and salient features of some species of each major family by pointing out those groups most likely to be encountered, including all North America pests. What's New in this Edition? Researchers in many orders use the results of cladistics, a new tool for determining the relationship of orders, families, genera, and species of organisms, including plants as well as animals Specialists have provided lengthy lists of generic changes Many of the identification keys have been revised by adding more illustrations and making sure all description terms are in the Glossary The bibliographies of each Order section have been updated to include all important works that have appeared since the original edition

✏Annotated List of the Lepidoptera of Alberta Canada Book Summary : This checklist of the Lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) of Alberta lists 2367 species reported to occur in the province, as well as 138 species whose occurrence in Alberta is probable. Each species entry includes adult flight time and distribution status in the Cordilleran, Boreal, and Grasslands ecozones, as well as references to taxonomic works and to the literature and public collection sources of the records. Detailed notes on taxonomy, nomenclature, distribution, habitat, and biology are given for 1524 of the listed species. An additional section provides details on 171 species erroneously reported from Alberta in previous works. The authors hope it will be a useful resource for anyone carrying out species-level work on Lepidoptera in western Canada, or taxonomic work on Lepidoptera in general. An introductory section provides a general overview of the order Lepidoptera and the natural regions of Alberta, and the history and current state of knowledge of Alberta Lepidoptera. Each of the 63 families (and selected subfamilies) occurring in Alberta is briefly reviewed, with information on distinguishing features, general appearance, and general biology. The list is accompanied by an appendix of proposed nomenclature changes, consisting of revised status for 25 taxa raised from synonymy to species level, and new synonymy for 20 species-level and one genus-level taxa here considered to be subjective synonyms, with resultant revised synonymy for one taxon and formalization of seven new combinations.

✏The Butterfly Plague Book Summary : "A distilled and refined novel." --Gail Anderson-Dargatz It is Hollywood 1938. A great star is planning a stunning comeback, while another is bent on self-destruction. And, as dark clouds hang ominously over Europe, hordes of Monarch butterflies swarm beautifully but menacingly over Hollywood. Against a colourful backdrop of butterflies and beaches, Timothy Findley skillfully phases reality into nightmare, exploring mothers' relationships to sons, women's relationships to men, beauty's relationship to evil. Blending biting humour with brilliant perceptions of the levels of despair, "The Butterfly Plague" presents the movie world in all its splendour and decay.
