✏Telemental Health Book Summary : Acquiring access to mental health treatments can be difficult for those who are not near mental health facilities. The growing field of telemental health addresses this problem by using video and telephone conferencing to provide patients with access to psychiatric professionals. However, the process faces challenges to gain adoption into mainstream medical practice and to develop an evidence base supporting its efficacy. In this comprehensive text, leading professionals in the field provide an introduction to telemental health and explore how to construct a therapeutic space in different contexts when conducting telemental health, how to improve access for special populations, and how to develop an evidence base and best practice in telemental health. In the past 15 years, implementation of telemental health has seemed to follow more from need than from demonstrated efficacy. The thorough and insightful chapters within this book show the importance of continued research and thoughtful development of ethical and responsible practice that is needed in the field and begin to lay out steps in constructing this process. Telemental Health will be an essential book for all clinical practitioners and researchers in mental health fields. Information in this book is focused on the clinical practice of telemental health, no other text is similarly oriented to clinical practice. Limited options for interested audience makes this text a top choice The Editors are experienced in multiple aspects of e-health across diverse clinical settings, and the authors are national leaders who are most knowledgeable regarding developments in the field Emphasis is on providing evidence-based care, and telemental health emerges as comparable to usual care, not a "second best" option; material is not esoteric but relevant to clinical practice. Readers will be able to readily find the equipment and other technology to establish their practice

✏A Practitioner s Guide to Telemental Health Book Summary : As telecommunication technologies and health apps become more ubiquitous and affordable, they expand opportunities for behavioural and mental health professionals to provide quality care. Telemental health now encompasses the full range of services, including assessment, treatment delivery, psychoeducation, supervision, and consultation. Many of the skills needed for competent telepractice are the same as in conventional in-office care. However, physical distance as well as technology itself can create challenges to safe and ethical practice. For instance, when conducting suicide assessment and intervention via videoconferencing, the clinician must be prepared to involve emergency or support services at the patient's location, while providing all the usual treatment documentation and follow-up. Such challenges are manageable when following the best practices outlined in this book.

✏Attitudes of Mental Health Professionals Toward Telemental Health Book Summary : The study's aim was to examine the attitudes and concerns of doctoral and master's level mental health providers toward the use of telemental health. There were 64 participants (mean age of 43.52 years [SD=11.74]) who completed the 46-item anonymous online survey. There were 25 master-level clinicians (LMHC, LMFT, LCSW) and 39 doctoral-level psychologists (PhD or PsyD) of which 69% were female, 78% White/Caucasian, 49% Hispanic, with an average of 13.35 years (SD= 8.43) of professional practice. Twenty independent samples t tests and 30 analysis of covariances (ANCOVA) were conducted. Those with pervious personal use of videoconference technology had a significantly lower level of concern regarding jeopardizing client confidentiality. Those with previous professional use of videoconference technology had a higher level of agreement for the use of telemental health in individual, couples and family therapy, and also had lower levels of concern for security risks, and the inability to completely observe clients' nonverbal cues. Doctoral level psychologists reported a higher level of agreement than did master's level clinicians with the use of videoconference technologies in individual therapy only, while men reported a higher level of agreement than did women with its use in family therapy. No significant differences were found for age, such that those under 42 did not differ in their level of agreement or concern with the use of telemental health from those 42 and older. Overall, it appears that professional exposure to the technologies increases agreement and reduces concerns for the use of telemental health, though this is less apparent in the areas related to behavioral emergencies, where most participants disagreed with this practice. This suggests that the practice of telemental health may be best used with clients who are clinically stable and less likely to experience behavioral emergencies. While more research on the effectiveness and acceptability - among providers and consumers - of telemental health certainly is needed, it might be an effective way to provide mental health services to those who might otherwise have obstacles to accessing mental health care.

✏Realizing the Benefits and Avoiding the Pitfalls of Telemental Health Care for Women Veterans Book Summary : The mental health of women veterans is influenced by gender-specific social and biological factors, and thus, they have gender-specific mental health care needs. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) telemental health system promises to improve the availability and quality of care for women veterans. This thesis begins with a brief history of telemedicine and a description of telemedicine practices available to women veterans through the VA. The second chapter discusses how the VA health care system is failing to serve the gender-specific mental health needs of women veterans and how telemental health services are a promising strategy to improve the accessibility and quality of mental health care. The third chapter examines the challenges and advantages of telemental health care for fulfilling the moral responsibilities of obtaining informed consent to treatment, protecting patient privacy and confidentiality, and establishing an effective therapeutic relationship. Finally, the fourth chapter argues that, with appropriate safeguards, the benefits of telemental health care outweigh its risks, and that the expansion of telemental health services to meet the need for accessible and effective mental health care for women veterans is justified by considerations of reciprocal and compensatory justice.

✏Case Study on Providing Telemental Health Video Counseling Services in a Sober Living Home Book Summary : The purpose of this case study is to examine the process and report outcomes of providing telemental health video counseling to men who reside at Providence Home, a sober living facility located in Columbia, South Carolina. This case study is instrumental in design. The South Carolina Telehealth Alliance (SCTA) provided a $20,000 grant jointly, for Bright Side Counseling Center and Midlands Recovery Center to expand telehealth services into underserved populations. An extensive search, at the time of this writing, was conducted and we found no instances of telemental health video counseling services being provided to residents of sober living homes in the state of South Carolina. This study was limited to men living at Providence Home. Residents were asked to volunteer and receive, free of charge, four telemental health video counseling sessions via an internet broadband connection. A Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) conducted the four counseling sessions over four to six weeks in October and November 2019. Volunteer participants completed the Telemental Health Video Counseling Patient Satisfaction Survey after the four counseling sessions. The Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved resident interview questions were used to conduct interviews with the residents that completed the four counseling sessions. Three staff members at Providence Home were also interviewed after all counseling sessions were completed, using IRB approved staff interview questions.

✏Psychological Assessment of Veterans Book Summary : Psychological assessment is practiced in wide-ranging settings to address the varied clinical and administrative needs of veteran populations. Such assessment blends record review, clinical interviews of the veteran and collateral sources of information, behavioral observations, and psychological testing. This book promotes the care and well-being of veterans by bringing together knowledgeable and experienced psychologists to discuss a range of psychological assessment methods and procedures. It aims to help patients and their families, healthcare providers, and concerned citizens gain an improved understanding of veterans' cognitive functioning, emotional states, personality traits, behavioral patterns, and daily functioning. The book begins with a history of the psychological assessment of veterans and investigates its efficacy in different settings, including outpatient mental health, long-term care, primary care, home-based primary care, and telemental health. Later chapters address assessment of a variety of disorders or presenting problems, including substance use disorders, psychotic disorders, mood disorders and suicidal thoughts and behavior, PTSD and other anxiety disorders, attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, dementia, pain and pain-related disorders, and polytrauma. The book concludes with important special considerations, including assessment of symptom and performance validity, assessment of homeless veterans and health-related quality of life, and ethical, legal, and professional issues. Psychological Assessment of Veterans provides an essential reference and guide for clinical psychologists, including those working in the subspecialties, and psychology trainees who work with veterans.

✏Evidence Based Review in Policy and Practice An Issue of Nursing Clinics Book Summary : Evidence synthesis is the evaluation or analysis of research evidence and opinion on a specific topic to aid in decision-making in health care. Although the science of evidence synthesis has developed most rapidly in relation to the meta-analysis of numerical data linked to theories of cause and effect, the further development of theoretical understandings and propositions of the nature of evidence, its role in health care delivery, and the facilitation of improved global health have increased rapidly since 2000. The articles appearing in this issue examine the role of evidence synthesis in nursing and health care and are written by expert translational scientists from across the world. Three introductory articles overview evidence synthesis and its role in evidence-based health care; methods, issues, and trends in the systematic review of health care evidence; and the development of a robust evidence base for nursing. Subsequent articles explore the impact of systematic reviews on policy and practice in a variety of settings, including perioperative care, pediatrics, rehabilitation and long-term/continuing care, mental health, and public health. The final articles discuss the impact of evidence on health policy and practice and the complexities of translating evidence into policy and practice. These articles show the importance of synthesizing evidence and translating policy and practice into action in our quest to improve health care and health outcomes.
