✏Monte Carlo Simulation Study of Self assembly in Colloidal and Polymeric Systems Book Summary : Monte Carlo simulations were used to study the influence of geometry and interparticle interactions on phase behavior of colloidal and polymeric systems. Phase diagrams were generated for both Tetragonal Parallelepipeds (cuboids) and fused dimers. Using first a polybead representation to model cuboids over a range of aspect ratios, a novel liquid crystalline mesophase--the cubatic phase--was obtained, in which the particles have high orientational order but reduced translational order. Subsequently, perfect hard Tetragonal Parallelepipeds were modeled. While the two models produced a similar and rich phase behavior at low and intermediate particle concentrations, some important differences were identified at higher densities. The dimer geometries studied were selected to match the microparticles synthesized by a collaborator and to help understand the experimental results obtained using convective assembly in 2D. The thermodynamic assembly of pear-shaped dimers (highly fused dimers with asymmetric lobes), peanut-shaped dimers (dimers with spheres separated by a distance slightly greater than their diameter), and dimers with tangential lobes ("degree of fusion" dof=0), was studied in detail. A plastic crystal (rotator phase) was obtained at high densities in pear-shaped colloids. A disordered crystal phase in which the lobes are on a triangular lattice but the dimers themselves do not have orientational order, was found to be stable in the peanut and dof=0 colloids. A hexatic phase was also observed in the dof=0 system. Finally, the role of interparticle interactions in the self assembly of a nanoparticle-A/polymer-B/nanoparticle-C triblock system was studied in the bulk and in thin films. The Perforated Lamellar phase was found to be stable in systems where the polymer volume fraction is close to that of the nanoparticles. Cylinders of polymer surrounded by a sheath of segregated nanoparticles were found to be stable in a system with polymer volume fraction of 0.33. Thin films of the hybrid triblocks with an air interface were studied for two cases: surface neutral to all particles and surface selective to nanoparticle A. Mainly cylinders and spheres with segregated nanoparticles were observed in both cases, but the cylinders formed possessed more orientational order when the selective surface was used.
