✏The Only Woman in the Room Book Summary : In 1946, at age twenty-two, Beate Sirota Gordon helped to draft the new postwar Japanese Constitution. The Only Woman in the Room chronicles how a daughter of Russian Jews became the youngest woman to aid in the rushed, secret drafting of a constitution; how she almost single-handedly ensured that it would establish the rights of Japanese women; and how, as a fluent speaker of Japanese and the only woman in the room, she assisted the American negotiators as they worked to persuade the Japanese to accept the new charter. Sirota was born in Vienna, but in 1929 her family moved to Japan so that her father, a noted pianist, could teach, and she grew up speaking German, English, and Japanese. Russian, French, Italian, Latin, and Hebrew followed, and at fifteen Sirota was sent to complete her education at Mills College in California. The formal declaration of World War II cut Gordon off from her parents, and she supported herself by working for a CBS listening post in San Francisco that would eventually become part of the FCC. Translating was one of Sirota’s many talents, and when the war ended, she was sent to Japan as a language expert to help the American occupation forces. When General MacArthur suddenly created a team that included Sirota to draft the new Japanese Constitution, he gave them just eight days to accomplish the task. Colonel Roest said to Beate Sirota, “You’re a woman, why don’t you write the women’s rights section?”; and she seized the opportunity to write into law guarantees of equality unparalleled in the US Constitution to this day. But this was only one episode in an extraordinary life, and when Gordon died in December 2012, words of grief and praise poured from artists, humanitarians, and thinkers the world over. Illustrated with forty-seven photographs, The Only Woman in the Room captures two cultures at a critical moment in history and recounts, after a fifty-year silence, a life lived with purpose and courage. This edition contains a new afterword by Nicole A. Gordon and an elegy by Geoffrey Paul Gordon.

✏The Only Woman in the Room Book Summary : The New York Times and USA Today Bestseller Hedy Lamarr possessed a stunning beauty. She also possessed a stunning mind. Could the world handle both? Her beauty almost certainly saved her from the rising Nazi party and led to marriage with an Austrian arms dealer. Underestimated in everything else, she overheard the Third Reich's plans while at her husband's side, understanding more than anyone would guess. She devised a plan to flee in disguise from their castle, and the whirlwind escape landed her in Hollywood. She became Hedy Lamarr, screen star. But she kept a secret more shocking than her heritage or her marriage: she was a scientist. And she knew a few secrets about the enemy. She had an idea that might help the country fight the Nazis...if anyone would listen to her. A powerful novel based on the incredible true story of the glamour icon and scientist whose groundbreaking invention revolutionised modern communication, The Only Woman in the Room is a masterpiece.

✏Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg A 30 minute Summary Book Summary : PLEASE NOTE: This is a summary of the book and NOT the original book. Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg - A 30-minute Summary Inside this Instaread Summary: • Overview of the entire book • Introduction to the important people in the book • Summary and analysis of all the chapters in the book • Key Takeaways of the book • A Reader's Perspective Preview of this summary: When Sandberg got pregnant she was working at Google, which at the time was only an obscure startup. As the company grew, and her pregnancy advanced, she started to notice things that were not helpful to her condition, such as the lack of parking spots for pregnant women at the front of the building. She expressed the need for pregnancy parking to Sergey Brin, one of Google’s founders, and he immediately agreed. This experience made her wonder about other pregnant women who suffered in silence due to the lack of parking and other special considerations. Women in the modern developed world, thanks to the work of their predecessors, are better off than women of the past and women in undeveloped countries. However, there is still a lot to do. Figures show that women are still at great disadvantage when it comes to obtaining positions of leadership and equal salaries to men. When Sandberg started working she thought things were changing, but she soon realized they were not because she was often the only woman in the room. Sandberg believes that a truly equal world would have women running half the corporate world and men running half the homes. Collective performance improves when you tap the entire pool of human resources and talent. This should start by having more women in positions of power. However, there are many external and internal barriers to this goal. The external barriers include: sexism, discrimination, and sexual harassment. In addition, women are normally expected to prove themselves. They are promoted based on past accomplishments, whereas men are often promoted based on potential. Women also face barriers within themselves: lack of self-confidence, prejudices, and low expectations. It is critical for women to overcome these internal and external barriers. The first chapter of the book lays out some of the complex challenges that women face, and each subsequent chapter focuses on how to overcome each of them. It is not a memoir, nor is it a self-help book. It is written for any woman wishing to increase her chances to make it to the top. As a disclaimer, Sandberg acknowledges that she has been criticized for “blaming the victim” by pressing women to change themselves, but the truth is far from that. She believes that female leaders are the solution to a more balanced world. It is time to encourage more women to “dream the possible dream” and more men to support their effort...

Assessment and the role of the midwife in early labour The first stage of labour, monitoring maternal and fetal wellbeing Coping with contractions, without pharmacological pain relief Advantages and disadvantages of pharmacological analgesia Indications for induction or augmentation of labour The second stage of labour and the procedure for episiotomy The third stage of labour and the impact of different approaches Different methods of anaesthesia and preparation for caesarean birth The procedure for evidence-based perineal suturing. Midwifery Essentials consists of a series of four pocketbooks, based on the popular and successful ‘Midwifery Basics’ articles published in ‘The Practising Midwife’ journal. They have been written in response to many requests from students, midwives and supervisors to combine these articles into a handy text. The books remain true to the style of the articles and have been updated and expanded to create a user-friendly source of information on different aspects of midwifery care. They will stimulate debate and require the reader both to reflect on their current practice, local policies and procedures and to challenge care that is not woman centred. There are many dimensions to the provision of woman-centred care that practitioners need to consider and understand so the series is based on the principles of holistic care, using a ‘jigsaw’ model as a framework. Each aspect of the jigsaw should be considered during the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of woman-centred maternity care, for example: how does a midwife obtain consent from a woman for a procedure, maintain a safe environment during the delivery of care and make the most of the opportunity to promote health? what are the professional and legal issues in relation to the procedure and is this practice based on the best available evidence? which members of the multi-professional team contribute to this aspect of care and how is it influenced by the way in which care is organised? Series features: Provides information essential for best practice at all stages of pregnancy and birth ‘Jigsaw’ model promotes holistic care Scenarios help readers understand the context of maternity care Activities encourage further exploration and debate.
