✏Staying Sober Book Summary : One summer evening, I was having a drink, somehow knowing that it really was the last drink, and that the following day I would never drink again. I had plenty of stops for a week or two, or even a few months, before, but for some reason, the 'finally had enough moment' in 2013 was a much more scary feeling, a sense that I was heading for unintentional suicide, and that frightened the life out of me. Drinking wasn't fun anymore; it was medicine. There had been plenty of rock bottoms: almost losing a leg horse-riding half-drunk, drunken date rape, battered by my first husband in continuous drunken arguments, getting arrested drunk, street fighting drunk, defacing property drunk, getting lost in the snow in my slippers drunk. Plenty of rock bottoms that never seemed quite bad enough. There are never enough terrible scenarios for some of us addicts. In my case risky situations came so often I just ended up thinking of them as a predictable down side of drinking; almost an occupational hazard. Drinking and recovering from drinking became pretty much a full time preoccupation. Falling asleep face down in a blizzard became a 'hilarious' Facebook post about making snow angels the next day. How we laughed. Becoming obsessed with the idea that I would one day get drunk enough to accidentally pop too many anti-depressant tablets, or accidentally walk out in front of traffic, or dive into the Tyne, was a new personal low. In my third decade drinking, there developed a nagging fear in the background of what I might do to myself in a drunken stupor. A dull awareness in my soul that I was no longer in control of my actions. I later learned that this growing paranoia is a classic sign of alcoholism. I grew convinced I was a danger to myself and no one else in the world could be trusted, except my 'friend', dear old wine. Coming home to wine was like coming home to a safe haven. I knew that taking anti-depressants and drinking a bottle of Shiraz each night was a pointless exercise in self-care, but was deeply in denial.

✏Back in Control Book Summary : Fans of Channel 4's ground-breaking drama Shameless know and love Tina Malone for her portrayal of the loud-mouthed, larger-than-life Mimi Maguire. But what they may not know is that Tina's own life has been more dramatic, more outrageous and frequently more out of control than anything the most talented scriptwriter could imagine. Tina's incredible story begins with an unusual childhood in Liverpool and takes the reader on a wild journey through teenage rebellion (and teenage pregnancy) to Tina's turbulent years as a young actress and single mother, before finding fame on Brookside and, later, Shameless. This is a story of addictions, mental illness, bankruptcy, extreme dieting, loves, losses and one woman's incredible resilience - and sense of humour - during a life that's seen more than its fair share of turmoil. And now, Tina is finally BACK IN CONTROL: in love, at peace and, after a course of IVF, a mother again at the age of 50 and looking forward to a wonderful new chapter in her life. Never one to shy away from controversy, Tina Malone's fearless and funny autobiography will inspire and entertain in equal measure.

✏Reflections of God s Work Book Summary : This work by Paul McLean is a deep weekly devotional that is both introspective and interactive. It is a weekly study as opposed to a daily reading in order to involve the reader on a more contemplative journey into focused biblical issues. By use of a weekly instead of a daily study, this devotional allows an opportunity to go deeper with God by narrowing the reader’s focus on particular biblical principles that impact his or her personal sphere. McLean vigorously maintains that Bible study, deep personal analysis, and prayer are critical anchors in weathering any of life’s storms while at the same time producing Christian growth and maturity. They are also the pillars from which growth, life balance, and fulfillment are achieved. This book is interactive through the use of journaling thoughts, impressions, and messages received through connecting with God’s word (Bible) during the week. Essentially, the reader evaluates his or her life by answering, in journalistic form, pointed and personal life questions. McLean believes that prayer and contemplative study play critical roles in the process of hearing from God. This devotional can also be used as a study guide for group sharing and personal growth. Each chapter touches on insights and personal experiences McLean has encountered in his work as a probation officer and from his involvement in prison ministry. He discovered that by witnessing the transforming power of Jesus Christ in the lives of criminal offenders, he was changed and shaped by God for a higher purpose.

✏How to Stay Sober Book Summary : Until now, virtually all therapy for alcoholics and other chemical-dependent individuals has been religious in nature. Traditional support groups imply that recovery is simply not possible without reliance on a supernatural "Higher Power." The need for a secular alternative to recovery from alcoholism or drug addiction is answered in How To Stay Sober. This book can help non-religious alcoholics maintain philosophical integrity while achieving the goal of lifelong sobriety. James Christopher, a longtime sober alcoholic, offers new insights and suggestions for developing coping skills and regaining self-esteem through self-reliance. He notes that current research indicates that there is no such thing as an "alcoholic personality" - that addiction is the result of physiology, not psychology. It is only by making sobriety the number one priority in life, Christopher states, that an alcoholic or addict can achieve recovery. Christopher has spearheaded a large grassroots secular sobriety movement across the United States, and this book offers concrete guidelines for forming these groups in any community. The book also provides an important weekly diary for the recovering alcoholic to use in the crucial first year of sobriety. Sobriety must be prioritized daily - no matter what - to remain under personal control. It is only through this conscious choice, Christopher states, that an alcoholic can get back on track and begin anew the creative, fulfilling learning process of life. Recommending self-reliance and self-respect without substituting dependence on religious dogma or a "higher power" for countering an addiction to alcohol or drugs, Christopher focuses on the practical aspects of his triumph and includes guidelines for forming a secular support group.

✏Spirituality and Society in the New Millennium Book Summary : At the beginning of the third millennium, concepts of spirituality are undergoing rapid transformation. While still closely connected to Christian values and beliefs, they are now also applied cross-culturally and used in interfaith and secular contexts. Voices around the globe affirm the urgent need for greater spiritual well-being, yet it is not clear how this can best be achieved or even what it means. The development of a wholesome spirituality relating to profound personal and social transformations may well be the most urgent task humanity has to address today. In this book, leading scholars of theology and religion explore the complex dynamics of different spiritual beliefs and practices and their effects on contemporary society. The editor's introductory essay examines the many understandings of spirituality in a postmodern intellectual and social context, but also looks at spirituality as both a personal quest and new academic field. The essays which follow, from a range of international contributors, present a rich tapestry of reflections on different aspects of spirituality. The contributions are grouped under three headings: Tradition and Change; Health and Education; and Culture and Politics.
