There are 4 ongoing solar projects in Algarve that will produce enough electricity to ful ll the load demand. The problem that the government is facing is the expansion of hybrid power system using other renewable resources in order to overcome climatic changes. In order to design a hybrid system, it is very important for the government to consider the minimum net present cost con guration for ful lling the load demand. The standalone hybrid system consists of a photovoltaic array (PV), a wind turbine (WT), a diesel generator (DG) and a battery. Di erent scenarios have been considered using HOMER software to obtain the lowest net present cost of the hybrid system. The results will establish the con guration to eradicate the problems the villagers are undergoing due to unavailability of electricity. This will lead to enhanced job opportunities and better living conditions in Algarve.

Abstract: There is a great interest in the development of renewable power technologies in Algeria, and more particularly hybrid concept. The present paper has investigated the performance of hybrid PV–Wind–Diesel–Battery configuration based on hourly measurements of Adrar climate (southern Algeria). Data of global solar radiation, ambient temperature and wind speed for a period of one year have been used. Firstly, the proposed hybrid system has been optimized by means of HOMER software. The optimization process has been carried out taking into account renewable resources potential and energy demand; while maximizing renewable electricity use and fuel saving are the purpose. In the second step, a mathematical model has been developed to ensure efficient energy management on the basis of various operation strategies. The analysis has shown that renewable energy system (PV–Wind) is able to supply about 70% of the demand. Wind power has ranked first with 43% of the annual total electricity production followed by diesel generator (with 31%) while the remaining fraction is being to PV panels. In this context, 69% of the fossil fuel can be saved when using the proposed hybrid configuration instead of the diesel generators that are currently installed in most remote regions in Algeria. Such a concept is very promising to meet the focus of renewable energy program announced in 2011.

Increasing oil prices, high transportation costs for fuels, and new environmental standards have forced many utilities to explore hybrid energy systems in an attempt to reduce the cost of electricity (COE). This research involves the development of a stand-alone hybrid power system model using MATLAB® Simulink® for synthesizing the power system data and performing the economic and environmental analysis of remote arctic power systems. The hybrid model consists of diesel electric generators (DEGs), a battery bank, a photovoltaic (PV) array, and wind turbine generators (WTGs). The economic part of the model is used to study the sensitivity analysis of fuel cost and the investment rate on the COE, the life cycle cost (LCC) of the system, and the payback time of the system. The environmental part of the model calculates the level of various pollutants including carbon dioxide (CO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and the particulate matter (PM10). The environmental analyses part of the model also calculates the avoided cost of various pollutants. The developed model was used to study the economics and environmental impacts of a stand-alone DEG system installed at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Energy Center, the wind-diesel-battery hybrid power system installed at Wales Village, Alaska, and the PV-diesel-battery hybrid power system installed at Lime Village, Alaska. The model was also used to predict the performance of a designed PV-wind-diesel-battery system for Kongiganak Village. The results obtained from the Simulink® model were in close agreement with those predicted by the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software developed at National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL)"--P. iii.

The frequent start/stop cycle for FC and electrolyzer is minimized. Abstract: Hybrid renewable energy systems (HRES) help to increase system reliability and improve power quality. However, they face certain challenges in their widespread deployment such as intermittently varying renewable energy (RE) sources like solar radiation and wind speed, high installation costs and limited lifetime of energy storage devices. Thus, there is a need to integrate these sources by means of a suitable power management strategy (PMS) despite the fluctuations in source and load power. This paper aims to formulate a PMS to integrate the power output from solar photovoltaic (PV) array, fuel cell (FC) stack and battery with a provision for onsite hydrogen (H2 ) generation by means of an electrolyzer and H2 tank. The control strategy handles the source power effectively by considering the limited lifecycle of storage devices. It also eliminates the need for a dump load in the system by matching the source power with load demand when the storage devices are charged to their maximum capacity.
