✏Splitting Methods for Partial Differential Equations with Rough Solutions Book Summary : Operator splitting (or the fractional steps method) is a very common tool to analyze nonlinear partial differential equations both numerically and analytically. By applying operator splitting to a complicated model one can often split it into simpler problems that can be analyzed separately. In this book one studies operator splitting for a family of nonlinear evolution equations, including hyperbolic conservation laws and degenerate convection-diffusion equations. Common for these equations is the prevalence of rough, or non-smooth, solutions, e.g., shocks. Rigorous analysis is presented, showing that both semi-discrete and fully discrete splitting methods converge. For conservation laws, sharp error estimates are provided and for convection-diffusion equations one discusses a priori and a posteriori correction of entropy errors introduced by the splitting. Numerical methods include finite difference and finite volume methods as well as front tacking. The theory is illustrated by numerous examples. There is a dedicated web page that provides MATLAB codes for many of the examples. The book is suitable for graduate students and researchers in pure and applied mathematics, physics, and engineering.

✏Splitting Deformations of Degenerations of Complex Curves Book Summary : The author develops a deformation theory for degenerations of complex curves; specifically, he treats deformations which induce splittings of the singular fiber of a degeneration. He constructs a deformation of the degeneration in such a way that a subdivisor is "barked" (peeled) off from the singular fiber. These "barking deformations" are related to deformations of surface singularities (in particular, cyclic quotient singularities) as well as the mapping class groups of Riemann surfaces (complex curves) via monodromies. Important applications, such as the classification of atomic degenerations, are also explained.

✏Iterative Splitting Methods for Differential Equations Book Summary : Iterative Splitting Methods for Differential Equations explains how to solve evolution equations via novel iterative-based splitting methods that efficiently use computational and memory resources. It focuses on systems of parabolic and hyperbolic equations, including convection-diffusion-reaction equations, heat equations, and wave equations. In the theoretical part of the book, the author discusses the main theorems and results of the stability and consistency analysis for ordinary differential equations. He then presents extensions of the iterative splitting methods to partial differential equations and spatial- and time-dependent differential equations. The practical part of the text applies the methods to benchmark and real-life problems, such as waste disposal, elastics wave propagation, and complex flow phenomena. The book also examines the benefits of equation decomposition. It concludes with a discussion on several useful software packages, including r3t and FIDOS. Covering a wide range of theoretical and practical issues in multiphysics and multiscale problems, this book explores the benefits of using iterative splitting schemes to solve physical problems. It illustrates how iterative operator splitting methods are excellent decomposition methods for obtaining higher-order accuracy.

✏The Splitting Extrapolation Method Book Summary : The splitting extrapolation method is a newly developed technique for solving multidimensional mathematical problems. It overcomes the difficulties arising from Richardson's extrapolation when applied to these problems and obtains higher accuracy solutions with lower cost and a high degree of parallelism. The method is particularly suitable for solving large scale scientific and engineering problems. This book presents applications of the method to multidimensional integration, integral equations and partial differential equations. It also gives an introduction to combination methods which are relevant to splitting extrapolation. The book is intended for those who may exploit these methods and it requires only a basic knowledge of numerical analysis.

✏Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting Book Summary : This book outlines many of the techniques involved in materials development and characterization for photoelectrochemical (PEC) – for example, proper metrics for describing material performance, how to assemble testing cells and prepare materials for assessment of their properties, and how to perform the experimental measurements needed to achieve reliable results towards better scientific understanding. For each technique, proper procedure, benefits, limitations, and data interpretation are discussed. Consolidating this information in a short, accessible, and easy to read reference guide will allow researchers to more rapidly immerse themselves into PEC research and also better compare their results against those of other researchers to better advance materials development. This book serves as a “how-to” guide for researchers engaged in or interested in engaging in the field of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting. PEC water splitting is a rapidly growing field of research in which the goal is to develop materials which can absorb the energy from sunlight to drive electrochemical hydrogen production from the splitting of water. The substantial complexity in the scientific understanding and experimental protocols needed to sufficiently pursue accurate and reliable materials development means that a large need exists to consolidate and standardize the most common methods utilized by researchers in this field.

✏Splitting Cane Book Summary : "It's about time someone wrote a book about bamboo fly rods, not as works of art or as elements of an ongoing tradition (although they can certainly be that) but as the fishing tools they were always meant to be. And Ed was just the guy to do it. He understands and appreciates the romance and heritage behind these rods, but he's also a practical fisherman who-first and foremost-expects a fly rod to cast well. This is the best kind of book: one that grew naturally out of the author's interest, knowledge, and enthusiasm." --John Gierach "Reading each chapter of Splitting Cane is much like opening a rod tube containing a fine bamboo rod. The rod and its maker come to life with the removal of the cap and the turn of each page. This book and the rod have been holding their breath, just waiting to be opened." --A.K. Best Interviews with 16 contemporary rodmakers Tips on caring for a bamboo rod The old-school bamboo fly-fishing rod, with its irresistibly warm, natural, and romantic tradition, is explored through conversations with 16 bamboo rodmakers. Profiled in the book are Mike Clark of South Creek, Ltd.; Walt Carpenter; John Bradford; Jim Hidy; Homer Jennings; Joe Arguello; Jeff Wagner; Charlie and Steven Jenkins; Glenn Brackett and the R.L. Winston Rod Company; Ted Knott; George Maurer; Robert Gorman; Bernard Ramanauskas; Dwight Lyons; Don Schroeder; and Carl-Johan Anderberg. The author test-casted the rods and then interviewed the makers to get the story behind each rod's making. The in-depth stories, along with clear, detailed descriptions of bamboo rods, and a chapter on rod-making basics make this an excellent read for all who appreciate a fine bamboo rod.

✏Splitting the Atom Book Summary : Learn about the process of Splitting The Atom with iMinds insightful knowledge series. The possibility of the existence of the atom has fascinated scientists for centuries. To begin with, it was more of a logical belief than scientific fact. But the belief in its existence is what motivated a number of people to develop the knowledge we now have about the atom. Ernest Rutherford, with the help of Ernest Walton and John Cockroft, first managed to split the atom in 1932. But they could not have done so without the wealth of information others had passed down to them. In the early 19th century, English scientist John Dalton first changed atomic theory from a vague idea into a more concise mathematical framework. He argued that all atoms of a given element must be identical to each other and that all chemical compounds are formed as a result of a combination of two or more different kinds of atoms. But one of the major hurdles was that nobody could actually see the atom. iMinds brings targeted knowledge to your eReading device with short information segments to whet your mental appetite and broaden your mind.

This is Why We Sleep for the head. There is nothing novel about headache. Since time immemorial, humans have suffered in its grip. Medieval Persia was a hotbed of intense debate over how to avoid and subsequently cure headache, and castor oil seemed to be prevalent as a remedy. Thankfully we have moved on. Darwin became a recluse because of his headaches, but on the bright side, this gave him more time to stay at home and think about the origin of the species. I doubt any modern human sees their headache as being a blessing, but it is trying to tell you something. How do we find out what that is? What is the point of pain?

An appropriate subtitle might be "Prayer by another name" as the theme of prayer runs throughout the book, which is unashamedly written from a Christian perspective. The poems reflect the people and places that have inspired or challenged the author but also reflect the continuous awareness of things spiritual and of the relationships that have been the poet's foundation. Other subthemes might be described as awareness and appreciation, which are, of course, "prayers by another name."
