📒Herodotean Inquiries ✍ S. Benardete
✏Herodotean Inquiries Book Summary : Herodotus has so often been called, since ancient times, the father of history that this title has blinded us to the question: Was the father of history an historian? Everyone knows that the Greek word from which 'history' is derived always means inquiry in Herodotus. His so-called Histories are in quiries, and by that name I have preferred to call them. His inquiries partly result in the presentation of events that are now called 'historical'; but other parts of his inquiry would now belong to the province of the anthro pologist or geographer. Herodotus does not recognize these fields as distinct; they all belong equally to the subject of his inquiry, but it is not self-evident what he understands to be his subject: the notorious difficulties in the proemium are enough to indicate this. If his work presents us with so strange a mixture of different fields, we are entitled to ask: Did Herodotus under stand even its historical element as we understand it? Without any proof everyone, as far as I am aware, who has studied him has assumed this to be so.
📒Spartan ✍ Valerio Massimo Manfredi
✏Spartan Book Summary : Herodotus tells us that not all of the three hundred Spartan warriors died at the hands of Xerxes, King of the Persians, in the battle of the Thermopylae: two were saved bringing a life-saving message back to the city . . . Valerio Massimo Manfredi's Spartan is the saga of a Spartan family, torn apart by a cruel law that forces them to abandon one of their two sons – born lame – to the elements. The elder son, Brithos, is raised in the caste of the warriors, while the other, Talos, is spared a cruel death and is raised by a Helot shepherd, among the peasants. They live out their story in a world dominated by the clash between the Persian empire and the city-states of Greece – a ferocious, relentless conflict – until the voice of their blood and of human solidarity unites them in a thrilling, singular enterprise.

📒Individuals In Thucydides ✍ H. D. Westlake
✏Individuals in Thucydides Book Summary : A study of the intellectual and moral qualities of twelve of the most important figures in Thucydides' History, six Athenian and six Spartan. Professor Westlake has a double purpose: he aims to extend our understanding of the motives and actions of the individuals in question; and he uses the passages on character study in the History to illustrate Thucydides' own intellectual development and his deepening understanding of the art of the historian. In its interpretation of Thucydides this is a book of genuine originality. Professor Westlake propounds his thesis lucidly and with conviction.
