✏Simulators in Anesthesiology Education Book Summary : In the past ten years, full-scale simulation training has become dramatically more evident in undergraduate and graduate medical education. This increase has been due pri marily to two factors: the development of new computer-driven technology and an interest in simulation-specific training techniques. Technologically, simulators have evolved from simple anatomical reproductions to full-scale accurate reproductions of anatomy and physiology powered by multiple computers. High-technology simulation centers run by teams of faculty are emerging as integral tools in fulfilling medical centers' educational missions. In addition, educational techniques specific to simulation, which have been de veloped and used by other industries for over half a century, are being applied to medical training. Aviation and aerospace have used sophisticated simulation since the 1950s to train pilots and astronauts. Extrapolating these methods for use in the medical world has been a natural course of events, particularly in specialties that require some of the same basic thought processes and interactions required of the pilot or astronaut. It is not surprising, then, that anesthesiology would be the medical specialty to take the lead in adding simula tion training to its educational programs. The anesthesiologist's job in the operating room is similar to that of a pilot in a cockpit, not in the specific tasks, but in decision making, technological and human interfaces, and crisis management.

✏Simulation for Anesthesia in Obstetrics Book Summary : Abstract Simulation has become a major player in the medical world. Still way behind other high-risk industries, simulation is being increasingly accepted and finds its ways into many clinical areas. Simulation offers the possibility to train individual skills as well as to evaluate performance, provide group crisis management training or even investigate the safety of installed systems and algorithms without risking patient's life. Obstetric units and labor suites have been identified as high-risk areas in the hospital setting and can be challenging environments for the anesthesiologist. Simulators can be used to improve communication skills and workload distribution, and specifically drill for obstetric-relevant crisis scenarios. However, it remains unclear how well these trainings do transfer into clinical performance and improved patient outcome. Being a relevant cost factor, simulation will have to provide answers to these questions; hence, more research is needed in the future.

✏Manual of Simulation in Healthcare Book Summary : Medical simulation is a relatively new science that is achieving respectability among healthcare educators worldwide. Simulation and skills centres have become established to integrate simulation into mainstream education in all medical, nursing, and paramedical fields. Borrowing from the experience and methodologies of industries that are using simulation, medical educators are grappling with the problem of rapidly acquiring the skills and techniques required to implement simulation programmes into established curricula. This book assists both novice and experienced workers in the field to learn from established practitioners in medical simulation. Simulation has been used to enhance the educational experience in a diverse range of fields; therefore a wide variety of disciplines are represented. The book begins with a section on the logistics of establishing a simulation and skills centre and the inherent problems with funding, equipment, staffing and course development, and promotion. Section two deals with simulators and related training devices that are required to equip a stand-alone or institution-based centre. The features, strengths, and weaknesses of training devices are presented to help the reader find the appropriate simulator to fulfil their training requirements. There is a guide to producing scenarios and medical props that can enhance the training experience. The third section covers adult education and it reviews the steps required to develop courses that comply with 'best practice' in medical education. Teaching skills, facilitating problem-based learning groups and debriefing techniques are especially important to multidisciplinary skills centres that find themselves becoming a centre for medical education. The manual concludes with guides for the major specialties that use simulation, including military, paediatrics, CPR and medical response teams, obstetrics, and anesthesia.

✏Anesthesia for Urologic Surgery Book Summary : This is a concise, up-to-date reference on anesthesia for urological surgery. Urological anesthesia is not recognized as a specialty, and a majority of anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists will provide anesthesia for these patients. Advances in urological procedures, the advent of treatment of patients with strong anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications, and the demographics of urology patients (many of whom are young or elderly) present challenges for the anesthesiologist and have necessitated changes in anesthesia practice. The last volume on this topic was published in 2000, and the time is right for a fresh presentation of contemporary expertise in anesthesia for urological surgery. The book provides a brief review of renal physiology and pharmacology then addresses anesthesia for each major group of urological procedures (e.g., endoscopic, office-based, laparoscopic and robotic, nephrolithotripsy, renal transplantation, etc.) and in special populations, including the geriatric patient, the pediatric patient, and the pregnant patient. Separate chapters discuss the unique challenges of positioning the patient, and of managing the patient taking anticoagulant and antiplatelet medication, and the chapter on pain management addresses common and important perioperative concerns. ✏Review Manual for the Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator Exam Book Summary : The authors of this review manual have captured all of the elements of simulation from establishing the objectives of simulated learning experiences, to constructing scenarios, to debriefing students and the simulation team, to assessing and evaluating the learning that has accrued. They have also described the range of simulation options and the contexts for their most effective use. ;Gloria F. Donnelly, PhD, RN, FAAN, FCPP, Dean and Professor College of Nursing and Health Professions, Drexel University Health professionals embarking on a career teaching simulation are embracing a world of innovation in which both teacher and student can develop their healthcare skills more rapidly and promote better patient outcomes. This is the first practice manual to assist healthcare simulation educators in the United States and internationally in preparing for certification in this rapidly emerging field. The authors, noted experts in simulation and education, have carefully analyzed the CHSE blueprint to ascertain what material is most likely to be covered. They present this information in a user-friendly, pithy outline format. This review manual provides numerous features that help students to critically analyze test content, including end-of-chapter review questions, test-taking strategies, and a comprehensive practice test with answers and rationales. It features current evidence-based teaching practices and incorporates case studies to connect simulation situations to simulation education with healthcare students and includes information about advanced certification and recertification. ✏Acute Critical Events Simulation ACES Book Summary : While the management of critically ill patients has traditionally been an undeveloped area of medicine, recent advances in drugs, surgical techniques, and medical equipment now allow patients to survive illnesses and disorders that previously were uniformly fatal. Unfortunately, the knowledge and techniques that are required to do this are not traditionally taught in medical school. Thus, medical errors in this population group are not uncommon and are more likely to have adverse, often fatal, consequences. In 2001, physicians responsible for the care of the critically ill were introduced to a new program providing them with the tools to significantly decrease the number and severity of medical errors: the Acute Critical Events Simulation (ACES) Program, an intensive and highly interactive course on the acute resuscitation of critically ill patients and the management of crisis situations. This book is a compendium to the ACES Program, containing its important background information and reference material while serving as an independent reference source for physicians and other health care professionals. With contributions by recognized physicians from across Canada, it presents the specifics of acute resuscitation in the context of crisis resource management and teaches readers life-saving resuscitation skills in a way that allows them to use their medical training more effectively. With increasing doctor shortages forcing more physicians to manage acutely ill patients, this book will aid physicians looking for a simple yet useful text to help them manage critically ill patients in connection with the ACES Program. While the intended audience for the course is primarily emergency room doctors, family physicians, and senior medical residents, this collection is also applicable to nurses, paramedics, respiratory therapists, and medical students.
