✏IUTAM Symposium on Segregation in Granular Flows Book Summary : Segregation is a pervasive phenomenon whereby a flowing granular mass consisting of particles with diverse physical properties becomes spatially inhomogeneous. In the industrial sector that deals with the handling and processing of bulk solids, this non-uniformity is highly undesirable since blend homogeneity is generally a stringent requirement of most products. In the arena of geophysical flows, segregation can enhance the destructive capabilities of natural events such as avalanches and landslides. During the last 15 years, these issues have provided motivation and fostered collaborations between the communities of mathematicians, engineers, industrial researchers, and physicists to develop predictive models of segregation by integrating the perspectives and approaches of each. The collection of unique papers brings to light many of the perplexing scientific and technical issues in our current understanding of this complex phenomenon. It addresses advances in experiment, computational modeling and theory. This volume is one of the very few books devoted entirely to problems of segregation of particulate solids.

✏Granular Patterns Book Summary : Despite seeming simplicity of granular materials, their physical properties are very different from conventional solids, liquids and gases due to the dissipative and highly nonlinear nature of forces among grains. This leads to a rich diversity of patterns which emerge in granular materials upon external excitation, which includes ripples, avalanches, or bands of segregated materials. This book presents a comprehensive review of experiments and novel theoreticalconcepts needed to understand the mechanisms of pattern formation in granular materials. The unique feature of our book is that we make a strong effort to connect concepts and ideas developed ingranular physics with new emergent fields, especially in biology, such as cytoskeleton dynamics, molecular motors transport, organization of active (self-propelled) particles and dynamic self-assembly.

✏Soft Condensed Matter Configurations Dynamics and Functionality Book Summary : The term `soft condensed matter' encompasses a wide range of substances which are neither ordinary solids nor ordinary liquids. They do have vestigial liquid and solid properties, but their character is much more complex and subtle. Systems range from foams and complex fluids to granular materials and biomaterials (proteins, DNA, membranes). The structural states they adopt are driven by subtle competition between intermolecular interaction energies and entropic forces, both of which are often close to thermal energies at room temperature. Configurations and their dynamic evolution are significant determinants of a wide variety of mesoscopic and microscopic properties. The book reviews both the language needed to discuss such systems, as well as basic questions about such phenomena as competing ground states, nonlinear feedback, and slow dynamics. The approach is pedagogical and tutorial, while the work presented is fully up to date. The level is appropriate to graduate researchers, either moving into the field or already active in it.

✏Flow Book Summary : From the swirl of a wisp of smoke to eddies in rivers, and the huge persistent storm system that is the Great Spot on Jupiter, we see similar forms and patterns wherever there is flow - whether the movement of wind, water, sand, or flocks of birds. It is the complex dynamics of flow that structures our atmosphere, land, and oceans. Part of a trilogy of books exploring the science of patterns in nature by acclaimed science writer Philip Ball, this volume explores the elusive rules that govern flow - the science of chaotic behaviour.

✏Dynamics Models and Kinetic Methods for Non equilibrium Many Body Systems Book Summary : Recent years have witnessed a resurgence in the kinetic approach to dynamic many-body problems. Modern kinetic theory offers a unifying theoretical framework within which a great variety of seemingly unrelated systems can be explored in a coherent way. Kinetic methods are currently being applied in such areas as the dynamics of colloidal suspensions, granular material flow, electron transport in mesoscopic systems, the calculation of Lyapunov exponents and other properties of classical many-body systems characterised by chaotic behaviour. The present work focuses on Brownian motion, dynamical systems, granular flows, and quantum kinetic theory.

✏Thermal Transport in Suspensions of Gases and Agitated Solids Book Summary : In this research, we investigate thermal transport in suspensions of gases and agitated solid particles by methods of theory, numerical simulation and experiment. We consider one-dimensional heat transfer across a collisional granular flow driven by external agitation, such as shearing and vibration. Using these methods, we find that the overall heat transfer across the collisional granular flows can be greatly enhanced by the self-diffusion of the solid phase, the thermal interaction between the two phases, and the gas phase mixing enhancement induced by the solid phase motion. Based on separate gas and solid phase temperatures, we propose a theory that incorporates different aspects of heat transfer mechanism in the confined granular flow, including the effects of particle Reynolds number, spatial variation in local "volume-averaged" volume fraction, and the spatial variation in the exposed particle surface area per unit volume in the near-wall region. In the "diffusion" limit, our theory is also able to capture the behavior of the effective thermal conductivity of nanofluids. It explains the importance of Brownian motion in the heat transfer enhancement of nanofluids. The theory also predicts the dependence of effective thermal conductivity on nano-particle size and suspension temperature. We prescribe appropriate procedures to extract heat transfer rates in experiments. With the latter, we observe significant overall heat transfer enhancement for all solid volume fraction under all vibration intensities. For high agitation level and high volume fraction, the heat transfer across the granular material is an order of magnitude higher than the conduction by pure gas, and increases with particle agitation. Our experiments also reveal the role played by the material and diameter of the solid particles in enhancing heat transfer. The theory predicts the corresponding dependence on material conductivity of the solids, volume fraction and agitation.

✏Granular Material based Technologies Book Summary : The past decade has seen an explosive growth of interest in the physics of granular materials. Granular media are comprised of macroscopic objects with internal degrees of freedom. Granular assemblies exhibit phenomena that incorporate the properties of traditional solids, liquids and gases, making it a unique state. In many ways, the granular state is a generalized state of matter. This new volume from the Materials Research Society brings together researchers from many countries and disciplines to assess issues and problems concerned with the collective behavior of granular assemblies as encountered in the context of various applications. In particular, these applications include ceramic science, shock propagation and absorption, design and maintenance of stable natural and artificial structures, processing of pharmaceuticals, and self-assembly processes associated with the synthesis of ultrahigh-density magnetic tapes. The volume should be of value to researchers involved in exploring granular material-based technologies, and is expected to stimulate further research in this arena. Topics include: electromagnetic fields; structural issues; flow behavior; and dynamical problems.

✏Physics of Dry Granular Media Book Summary : Dry granular materials, such as sand, sugar and powders, can be poured into a container like a liquid and can also form a pile, resisting gravity like a solid, which is why they can be regarded as a fourth state of matter, neither solid nor liquid. This book focuses on defining the physics of dry granular media in a systematic way, providing a collection of articles written by recognised experts. The physics of this field is new and full of challenges, but many questions (such as kinetic theories, plasticity, continuum and discrete modelling) also require the strong participation of mechanical and chemical engineers, soil mechanists, geologists and astrophysicists. The book gathers into a single volume the relevant concepts from all these disciplines, enabling the reader to gain a rapid understanding of the foundations, as well as the open questions, of the physics of granular materials. The contributors have been chosen particularly for their ability to explain new concepts, making the book attractive to students or researchers contemplating a foray into the field. The breadth of the treatment, on the other hand, makes the book a useful reference for scientists who are already experienced in the subject.
