✏Thornton and Tully s Scientific Books Libraries and Collectors Book Summary : In the 25 years since the last edition of Thornton and Tully’s Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors was published, scientific publishing has mushroomed, developed new forms, and the academic discipline and popular appreciation of the history of science have grown apace. This fourth edition discusses these changes and ponders the implications of developments in publishing at the end of the twentieth century, while concentrating its gaze upon the dissemination of scientific ideas and knowledge from Antiquity to the industrial age. In this shift of focus it departs from previous editions, and for the first time a chapter on Islamic science is included. Recurrent themes in several of the ten essays in the present volume are the definition of ’science’ itself, and its transmutation by publishing media and the social context. Two essays on the collecting of scientific books provide a counterpoint, and the book is grounded on a rigorous chapter on bibliographies. The timely publication of Scientific Books, Libraries and Collectors comes at the coincidence of the advent of electronic publishing and the millennium, a dramatic moment at which to take stock.

✏Proceedings of the International Symposium Science Engineering Libraries for the 21st Century Leuven October 2 4 2002 Arenbergkasteel Leuven Heverlee Book Summary : The digital revolution of the last decades of the 20th century had a vast impact on scientific, and other libraries worldwide. Modern technology has made the access to information so much easier and faster, and the Internet sometimes gives its users the false impression that all information can be obtained without any human intervention. If this were true, libraries would be reduced from intellectual laboratories to museums, where visitors only come to look at those strange paper format precursors of the digital information carriers. Even if such an extreme futuristic view cannot be completely excluded, it is still very far away. In the meantime, libraries and librarians continue to play an important role, especially in the digital environment where the traditional skills of librarians have found a new importance and new applications. Their devotion to the preservation of historically significant documents may counterbalance the tendency of the Internet to become a dull collection of knowledge facts and to forget the logical processes through which this knowledge was obtained. The long-established experience of librarians as organizers of information and as facilitators of the access to this organised knowledge collection has already proven to be of immeasurable value for the use of all kinds of digital information sources.

✏Medical Scientific Library Plans for the Print Materials Collection Book Summary : The study looks closely at the plans of 25 major medical and other scientific libraries for their print materials collection. Survey participants include Carnegie Mellon University, Colorado State University, the Spanish National Research Council, the Linda Hall Library, the Cleveland Clinic Library, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, the University of Bath, Ashland Inc., the Royal College of Nursing, and the Harrell Health Sciences Library of Penn State University, and many others. The report covers library acquisition plans in journals, books and eBooks, practices on culling print materials, trends in surveying end users preferences on paper vs, digital information access, preferred rates of change in paper/digital access models, and other issues of interest to academic, corporate and government medical and other scientific librarians. The report helps its end users to answer questions such as: are medical and scientific libraries phasing out paper? If so, in what areas and how quickly? Are certain kinds of scientists more supportive of paper-based access? What is the demand for paper-based journals? How comfortable are patrons with eBook access? Billions of dollars are still being spent on paper-based scientific and medical materials for libraries: what is the future of these expenditures? Just a few of the study's many findings are that: Spending on ebooks in 2016 by the libraries sampled decreased. The percentage of subscriptions accounted for by joint print and online journal subscriptions in the sample is expected to decrease from 13% in 2017 to 12% in 2018. Only 7% of total subscriptions of medical libraries are accounted for by print only journals, while this figure is 15% in the case of non-medical libraries. In 2015 hospital libraries in the sample spent a mean of $145,200 on print books.

✏Multimedia Services in Intelligent Environments Book Summary : Multimedia services involve processing, transmission and retrieval of multiple forms of information. Multimedia services have gained momentum in the past few years due to the easy availability of computing power and storage media. Societyisdemandinghuman-likeintelligentbehaviour,suchasadaptationand generalization, from machines every day. With this view in mind, researchers are working on fusing intelligent paradigms such as arti?cial neural networks, swarm intelligence, arti?cial immune systems, evolutionary computing and multiagents with multimedia services. Arti?cial neural networks use neurons, interconnected using various schemes, for fusing learning in multimedia-based systems. Evolutionary c- puting techniques are used in tasks such as optimization. Typical multiagent systems are based on Belief-Desire-Intention model and act on behalf of the users. Typical examples of intelligent multimedia services include digital - braries, e-learning and teaching, e-government, e-commerce, e-entertainment, e-health and e-legal services. This book includes 15 chapters on advanced tools and methodologies pertaining to the multimedia services. The authors and reviewers have c- tributed immensely to this research-oriented book. We believe that this - search volume will be valuable to professors, researchers and students of all disciplines, such as computer science, engineering and management. We express our sincere thanks to Springer-Verlag for their wonderful e- torial support.

✏Developing a Digital National Library for Undergraduate Science Mathematics Engineering and Technology Education Book Summary : In 1996, the National Science Foundation (NSF) released a report about ways to improve undergraduate science, mathematics, engineering, and technology (SME&T) education. One recommendation called for establishing a digital library, similar to those that are being constructed for many research communities, that would make available electronically a wide variety of materials for improving teaching and learning of SME&T. The NSF asked the National Research Council to examine the feasibility of and issues associated with establishing such a digital national library. In response, an NRC steering committee commissioned a series of papers and convened a workshop to consider these issues. This resulting book delineates the issues that should be considered and provides recommendations to resolve them prior to committing funds.
