✏Sell Your Book Script or Column Book Summary : However you do it, how you write your initial query is the key to success. This is what gets your e-mail query opened and read. Then, this initial impression shapes the way your project is considered. SELL YOUR BOOK, SCRIPT OR COLUMN will help you write a powerful query letter, drawing on my experience of over four years of writing queries for over 900 clients, as well as writing my own successful queries leading to sales of over a dozen books and options on a dozen scripts and TV projects. The book includes articles on writing good query letters, guidelines to write your own letter, and samples of letters I have written that led to high responses and resulted in deals in different industries. The first section provides general tips on pitching your material, writing a good query, and formatting it for an e-mail query, which is different from sending a postal query. It includes articles about whether to directly contact the publishers, editors, producers, and production companies or seek an agent to represent you. The next sections feature guidelines for writing a query for books, articles, columns, and screenplays. The basic principles are the same from industry to industry. The last section includes some sample letters, organized by industry. You'll find this information invaluable in knowing how to best make that all important connection. Then, when you are ready to make those connections, you can send out your own query letter or use a query service, such as PublishersAndAgents or ScreenplayWritersConnection to help.

✏Semantic Mechanisms of Humor Book Summary : GOAL This is the funniest book I have ever written - and the ambiguity here is deliberate. Much of this book is about deliberate ambiguity, described as unambiguously as possible, so the previous sentence is probably the fIrst, last, and only deliberately ambiguous sentence in the book. Deliberate ambiguity will be shown to underlie much, if not all, of verbal humor. Some of its forms are simple enough to be perceived as deliberately ambiguous on the surface; in others, the ambiguity results from a deep semantic analysis. Deep semantic analysis is the core of this approach to humor. The book is the fIrst ever application of modem linguistic theory to the study of humor and it puts forward a formal semantic theory of verbal humor. The goal of the theory is to formulate the necessary and sufficient conditions, in purely semantic terms, for a text to be funny. In other words, if a formal semantic analysis of a text yields a certain set of semantic proptrties which the text possesses, then the text is recognized as a joke. As any modem linguistic theory, this semantic theory of humor attempts to match a natural intuitive ability which the native speaker has, in this particular case, the ability to perceive a text as funny, i. e. , to distinguish a joke from a non-joke.

✏Talk to Me Book Summary : Published in conjunction with an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, Talk to Me thrives on an important late 20th-century cultural development in design: a shift from the centrality of function to that of meaning. From this new perspective, objects contain information that goes well beyond their immediate use or appearance, providing access to complex systems and networks and acting as gateways and interpreters. Whether openly and actively, or in subtle, subliminal ways, things talk to us, and designers write the initial script that lets us develop and improvise the dialogue. Talk to Me focuses on objects that involve direct interaction, such as interfaces, information systems, communication devices, and projects that establish a practical, emotional or even sensual connection between their users and entities such as cities, companies, governmental institutions, as well as other people. The featured objects range in date from the early 1980s beginning with the first Graphic User Interface, developed by Xerox Parc in 1981 with particular attention given to projects from the last five years and to several ones currently in development. Included are a diverse array of examples, from computer and machine interfaces to websites, video games, devices and tools, and installations. Organized thematically, Talk to Me features essays by Paola Antonelli, Jamer Hunt, Alexandra Midel, Kevin Slavin, and Koi Vinh. By introducing design practices that are becoming increasingly crucial to our world, the book presents a highly distilled sample of todays best design production that uses technology in creative and unexpected ways, showing how rich and deep designs influence will be on our future.

✏Problem Solving and Cat Tales for the Holidays Book Summary : Here is a collection of happy, nourishing hero-cat and loving human family historical, adventure, and time-travel stories and novels for all holidays in spite of the wars. It's Christmas. It's Hannukah. It's Ramadan. It's all holidays, and time for an adventure. For example, take the Silk Road stories: "For where there's worship, there's more trade," Baghatur added. The next morning was another hot day in July, and Bihar went along the road between the fields of wheat. Women were starting to work the fields again. The children carried sheaves on their heads. Everything had to be done by hand. In Nablus, life went with no work. The food was gone, and not enough healers yet. So Bihar was welcome to mix his herbs and alchemy because they made miracles. He passed an old farmer wearing a large Greek cross. "Keev Halik?" In Arabic Bihar asked the man how he was. "Forget me," the farmer waved back. "Your crops are still rotting?" Bihar asked as he walked toward Jerusalem. "I had to sell my farm cheap." The farmer laughed tensely. "So did my forefathers in Sarkel," Bihar answered, with a pointed finger. "Are you a Cherkessk Mountaineer?" "What difference would it make to you from where I come? Does the left side of the Sea mean more to you than the right side of it? There's enough fish at both ends to feed the world." "Where are you going?" The farmer shielded his eyes from the sun with his hands. "I'm going to Jerusalem."
