✏Risk Management in Blood Transfusion The Virtue of Reality Book Summary : Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, with great pleasure I like to welcome you in the cityofGroningen and hope that you will have an enriching and enlighten ing discussion on the conference theme on risk management in blood trans fusion. The organisation of this symposium aims at scientific networking by discussing in an international forum the most important themes of current interest in relation to the state of the art in transfusion medicine. Dr. Cees Smit Sibinga took the initiative in 1976 to start organising the blood bank symposia as they were named in the beginning. Without doubt these symposia have contributed considerably to the development of transfusion medicine. To illustrate the fact that these symposia came to my attention I recollect that I have attended the symposium in 1978, chaired by Dr. Leo Vroman, in my capacity in those days of alderman deputy mayor of the city. So, it has been a long time since. After having been away from Groningen for 18 years I have been inaugurated last week as a mayor and it is a plcasure to be again in your midst. The scries of annual symposia on blood transfusion have contributed to mark the city of Groningen on the map of the international scientific world. A great number of prestigious institutes all over the world involved in the development of transfusion medicine have linked to Groningen and we are proud of that.

✏Trigger Factors in Transfusion Medicine Book Summary : It is an honour and a pleasure to welcome you all at this 20th annual International Symposium on Blood Transfusion in the Netherlands. This year you celebrate its 20th anniversary and I congratulate the Staff of the Blood Bank Noord Nederland and especially Dr. Smit Sibinga for this great achievement. As most of you know, the name of the person of Dr. Smit Sibinga is unbreakably con nected with the annual symposium in Groningen which he has organized each year from the very start, 20 years ago. The reputation of any symposium depends heavily on the quality of the lectures. I think it is not possible to organize 20 symposia in a row if the topics lack actual relevance and the speakers are not of excellent reputation. Dr. Smit Sibinga has proven to have a keen eye for selecting interesting themes and eminent speakers. Although a lot of different topics have been dealt with in the past 20 years, which each attracted the attention of a different group in the field of blood transfusion, it is not surprising that after a tradition of 20 years several speakers but also a lot of attendees are not for the first time in Groningen to participate in this event. It gives the symposium a unique atmosphere of intimacy. It is not hard to admit that most of the newer developments in transfusion medicine take place outside the Netherlands.

✏Good Manufacturing Practice in Transfusion Medicine Book Summary : TQM AND TAYLORISM; HOW THEY COMPARE H. Bremer Preface The industrial world today is divided between two camps: a culture based on the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM), developed in the Far East, and one still strongly influenced by the origins of "Scientific Management", intro duced in the West by F.W. Taylor and others at the turn of the century. This divergence will be shown to have arisen in the last forty years, long enough for a new generation of managers and corresponding culture to emerge. The two cul tures are so deeply entrenched that it is difficult for one to change to the other. However, there is strong evidence to support the contention that people-oriented TQM is superior, and those companies clinging to Taylor models now face diffi cult decisions. Actions by Taylor-companies to move to TQM rnight weH be hindered rather than helped by applying present Quality Assurance Standards, developed by Taylor-oriented national and international Standards Institutions.

✏Transfusion Medicine and Patient Safety Book Summary : Transfusional medicine is a young discipline, whereas the AB0 system was discovered only at the beginning of the last century, and that the neonatal haemolytic disease has been described in the middle of the 20th century. However, the evolution of technologies and diagnostic systems for immunohaematology, especially in recent decades, has been very intense and fast, and today the transfusional process, from the donation of blood until the transfusion of the patient, is perfectly controlled. This volume aims to highlight the main critical moments in which the operator must pay close attention, and at the same time offers the cultural, organizational and instrumental means for error prevention.

✏Advances in Transfusion Safety Book Summary : Improving the safety for blood and blood product transfusion It is amazing that in the first years of the 21st century there are insufficient blood supplies and that some supplies are unsafe in certain areas of the world. Regulations and codes call for continuous improvement in processes and attitudes to assure safety everywhere. To that end nearly 200 transfusionists and their colleagues gathered in Sydney in October 2005 to conduct a marathon symposium on methods and advances made towards achieving universal safety for blood and blood product transfusion. Sponsors of the latest products joined in to support this extraordinary meeting of information and ideas. Advances in transfusion safety were put forward from all areas of the blood transfusion process, including establishment of services, donor selection, infections that may affect donors, safe testing, risk and safety assessment, the roles of government and regulation, the use of blood and its products as well as the need for effective communication. The resulting papers from internationally renowned experts are published in these proceedings.

✏Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis Book Summary : Transfusion Medicine and Hemostasis is a manual-style book that links transfusion medicine and hemostasis to laboratory methods and diagnostic tests engaged in routine and specialized coagulation laboratories. The book is divided into two main parts with chapters that are brief and readable. The first main part of the book is subdivided into blood banking and transfusion medicine. Under blood banking, the chapters cover blood collection, donation process, component manufacturing, donor testing and storage; transfusion-medicine chapters examine the components for transfusion, pre-transfusion immunohematology testing, blood groups, blood products and their modifications, approaches to transfusion therapy in specific clinical settings, and transfusion reactions and complications. In addition, chapters that talk about apheresis, cellular therapy, and tissue banking in the hospital setting are included. Hemostasis, the second main part of the book, is subdivided into three sections. The first section, clinical coagulation, includes chapters about neonatal thrombocytopenia, inherited platelet function disorders, immune thrombocytopenia, immune-mediated coagulopathies, congenital bleeding disorders, and acquired bleeding disorders. The second section relates to laboratory testing of coagulation, with chapters about laboratory assessments of platelet disorders, von Willebrand disease, coagulation factor disorders, fibrinogen and fibrinolysis, tests for hypercoagulable state and for activation of the coagulation system, and laboratory support for anticoagulation. The third section discusses coagulation factor products. This book will be valuable for the education of trainees, practitioners, and future leaders in these fields.
