✏Crime and Poverty in 19th Century England Book Summary : It has long been suggested that poverty was responsible for a criminal underclass emerging in Britain during the nineteenth century. Until quite recently, historians did little to challenge this perception. Using innovative quantitative and qualitative data analysis techniques, this book looks in detail at some of the causal factors that motivated the poorer classes to commit crime, or act in ways that transgressed acceptable standards of behaviour. It demonstrates how the strategies that these individuals employed varied between urban and rural environments, and shows how the poor railed against legislative reforms that threatened the solvency of their households. In the process, this book provides the first solid appreciation of the complex relationship between crime and poverty in two distinct socio-economic regions between 1830 and 1885.

✏Terrorism and Community Relations Report together with formal minutes and appendix Book Summary : This is an inquiry into how the threat of international terrorism has affected community relations. Although it looks at the stigmatisation of minority groups, the incidence of prejudice, media coverage and policing and civil liberties in general, it focuses on the Muslim community in particular. The report covers the existing problems of community relations; developments since 9/11; Britain's communities and community relations; central and local government; the use of ant-terrorism powers; tackling international terrorism; and the media. The final conclusion is positive and expresses a belief that the UK is well placed to deal with the issues raised in the report. Integration and diversity has been part of our political discourse for longer than many other EU countries and we are further down the road to accepting Britons of different faiths and ethnic backgrounds. However there is greater confidence at local levels rather than nationally and active leadership is required.
