✏Toward Sustainability Book Summary : Toward Sustainability recommends a design for a new Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) for the U.S. Agency for International Development (AID). Currently, eight CRSPs operate under legislation that supports long-term agricultural research of benefit to developing countries and the United States. This book defines a process by which knowledge from all relevant AID-supported programs could be integrated and applied to advance profitable farming systems that improve local conditions and contribute to environmental goals. It makes recommendations on the types of competitive grants that should be made available under a new program, institutional participation, content of research proposals, and administrative procedures.

✏Biopesticides Book Summary : Biological controls that utilize natural predation, parasitism or other natural mechanisms, is an environmentally friendly alternative to chemical pesticides. Chemical pesticide methods are becoming less readily available due to increasing resistance problems and the prohibition of some substances. This book addresses the challenges of insufficient information and imperfectly understood regulatory processes in using biopesticides. It takes an interdisciplinary approach providing internationally comparative analyses on the registration of biopesticides and debates future biopesticide practices.

✏Recent Advances in Biopesticides Book Summary : Excessive use of chemicals and pesticide in agricultural crops is being deplored by the community and scientists. It is because of the fact that, these not only result in environmental and safety hazards but also lead to development of new strains of pests and pathogens. Thus the use of 'organic products' which do not have any utilization of chemical fertilizers and pesticides are increasing day by day. The book deals with the detailed description about a number of biopesticides which are used for management of fungi, bacteria, virus and nematodes. Topics like biological control of soil borne fungi, plant viruses, applications of bacteria, Rhizobacteria, plant species etc. are discussed in detail in the book. The traditional aspects of biopesticides management along with the future prospects and biotechnological approaches and applications have been dealt in the book. As biopesticides industry is growing at a fast pace and the use of new tools and techniques by the researchers are making it more meaningful, the volume as a whole will serve as a tool for the management of diseases in an eco-friendly manner.

✏Appropriate Oversight for Plants with Inherited Traits for Resistance to Pests Book Summary : A report from a coalition of 11 scientific societies regarding the EPA's policy on genetically engineered plants and a proposal to regulate "plant-pesticides". Considers that pending federal regulations threaten to stifle the development of alternatives to chemical pesticides. Urges the EPA to reconsider its policy before it becomes final. The Agency wants to expand its federal regulatory powers over the characteristics of plants that help plants resist diseases and pests. Emphasizes that all plants are able to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate pests or diseases. Illustrated.

✏Biodegradation of Pesticides Book Summary : When first developed, chlorinated pesticides such as DDT, dieldrin, and mirex were received with open arms, quickly becoming popular as effective, economic agents against pests. But evidence began to mount that residues of these chemicals remained in the environment, not breaking down, often appearing in plants and animals. By the late seventies many pesticides had achieved a terrible notoriety and were subsequently banned in a number of countries. Of tremendous concern, then, is the persistence of pesticides in the environment. The major thrust of research and development in the area of pesticides has properly been the creation of substances that are both effective and degradable. Yet in order to successfully promote the use of biodegradable pesticides, one must fully understand the mechanism of degradation, and it is to this vital subject that we address ourselves in the present volume. According to the Biodegradation Task Force, Safety of Chemicals Com mittee, Brussels (1978), biodegradation may be defined as the molecular degradation of an organic substance resulting from the complex action of living organisms. A substance is said to be biodegraded to an environmentally acceptable extent when environmentally undesirable properties are lost. Loss of some characteristic function or property of substance by biodegradation may be referred to as biological transformation.
