✏Pedagogical Stylistics in Multiple Foreign Language and Second Language Contexts A Synthesis of Empirical Research Book Summary : This article examines the efficacy of pedagogical stylistics as a learning tool for developing second or foreign language proficiency. Pedagogical stylistics – an instrument for investigating the linguistic, sociocultural and dialogic features inherent in literary and non-literary texts – has often been criticized for relying too heavily on intuition rather than empirical support to substantiate its employment in language learning classrooms. To better understand this criticism a coding framework adapted from previous research was employed to synthesize 13 studies across four, second or foreign languages in nine countries. Three themes emerged from this synthesis: (1) stylistics as a tool for improving L2 performance; (2) stylistics' contribution to building language awareness; (3) stylistics as a tool for building academic skills beyond L2 acquisition. This work explores these themes and discusses the research practices informing the claims made therein, highlighting a consistent underreporting or under collecting of data as a recurring problem in the literature. This shortcoming precludes a meta-analysis of the literature, and this article argues that this shortcoming contributes to a justifiably weak representation of stylistics in second or foreign language contexts. To rectify this issue suggestions are made for more thorough reporting of data and a more robust research agenda in second or foreign language-based, stylistic contexts.

✏The Device of Graphology in Joe Ushies Poetry Stylistic and Pedagogical Implications Book Summary : Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Linguistics, grade: 80.7, Tai Solarin University of Education (College of Humanities), course: English Language (Stylistics), language: English, abstract: This dissertation is an investigation into the poetry of Joe Ushie from the perspective of linguistics. There are different linguistic levels of analysing a literary or non-literary text. These levels include: syntax, semantics, lexis, phonology, graphology and others; in order to achieve the objectives of this study, this essay investigates the deployment of graphology as a device of meaning and aesthetics. Graphology is the study of language in print; a stylistic instrument which makes Ushie's writing peculiarity an illustrating example of style as deviation from the actual linguistic norm. The study adopts foregrounding and multimodality as theoretical frameworks to the stylistic interpretations of the poetry of this author. Foregrounding as a theory was first put forward by Jan Mukrovsky at the University of Prague. Significantly, by establishing a modified model of categorisation of Graphological devices, this research will improve the teaching and learning of graphology as a device of literary composition by way of assisting learners to develop linguistic abilities necessary for them to read, understand and respond to literary and non-literary works sensitively.

✏Social Identities and Multiple Selves in Foreign Language Education Book Summary : Within foreign language education contexts across the globe, inadequate attention has been paid to documenting the dynamics of identity development, negotiation and management. This book looks at these dynamics in specific relation to otherness, in addition to attitudinal and behavioural overtones created through use of the term 'foreign' (despite its position as an integral marker in language acquisition discourse). This book argues that individual identities are multidimensional constructs that gravitate around a hub of intricate social networks of multimodal intergroup interaction. The chapters pursue a collective desire to move the notion of identity away from theoretical abstraction and toward the lived experiences of foreign language teachers and students. While the identities entangled with these interactions owe a significant measure of their existence to the immediate social context, they can also be actively developed by their holders. The collection of chapters within this book demonstrate how foreign language education environments (traditional and non-traditional) are ideal locations for the development of a sophisticated repertoire of discursive strategies used in the formulation, navigation, expression and management of social identities and multiple selves.

✏Children s Literature and Learner Empowerment Book Summary : Children's literature can be a powerful way to encourage and empower EFL students but is less commonly used in the classroom than adult literature. This text provides a comprehensive introduction to children's and young adult literature in EFL teaching. It demonstrates the complexity of children's literature and how it can encourage an active community of second language readers: with multilayered picturebooks, fairy tales, graphic novels and radical young adult fiction. It examines the opportunities of children's literature in EFL teacher education, including: the intertexuality of children's literature as a gate-opener for canonised adult literature; the rich patterning of children's literature supporting Creative Writing; the potential of interactive drama projects. Close readings of texts at the centre of contemporary literary scholarship, yet largely unknown in the EFL world, provide an invaluable guide for teacher educators and student teachers, including works by David Almond, Anthony Browne, Philip Pullman and J.K.Rowling. Introducing a range of genres and their significance for EFL teaching, this study makes an important new approach accessible for EFL teachers, student teachers and teacher educators.
