The zeolite lattice may also be used as a host for encapsulated complexes or metallic clusters allowing the control of nuclearity of these active species and the steric constraints imposed on the reactants. Molecular sieve and shape selectivity effects have also constituted fascinating aspects of zeolite properties. Recent developments leading to increasingly large pore sizes with VPI-5, cloverite and more recently mesoporous molecular sieves have broadened the spectrum of these applications. Indeed, larger and larger reactant and product molecules can be accommodated in these lattices. These new adsorbant/adsorbate systems create additional needs for experimental data and theoretical descriptions of transport properties, in particular of mono- and multi-components diffusion coefficients in the zeolite pore lattice. All these themes, representing the forefront and current trends in zeolite research, were discussed in the submitted papers to the symposium and are widely represented in the selected papers contained in this volume. A feature common to most of these contributions is the combined use of a variety of analytical techniques. For this purpose atmospheric residue was chosen as the base for defining other heavy feeds which comprise vacuum gas oil, deasphalted oil and vacuum residues in addition to topped heavy crude and bitumen. Attention is paid to deactivation with the aim to extent catalyst life during the operation. Into consideration is taken the loss of activity due to fouling, metal deposition, coke formed as the result of chemical reaction and poisoning by nitrogen bases. Mathematical models were reviewed focussing on those which can simulate performance of the commercial operations. Configurations of hydroprocessing reactors were compared in terms of their capability to upgrade various heavy feeds providing that a suitable catalyst was selected. Strategies for regeneration, utilization and disposal of spent hydroprocesing catalysts were evaluated. Potential of the non-conventional hydroprocessing involving soluble/dispersed catalysts and biocatalysts in comparison with conventional methods were assessed to identify issues which prevent commercial utilization of the former. A separate chapter is devoted to catalytic dewaxing because the structure of dewaxing catalysts is rather different than that of hydroprocessing catalysts, i.e., the objective of catalytic dewaxing is different than that of the conventional hydroprocessing, The relevant information in the scientific literature is complemented with the Patent literature covering the development of catalysts and novel reactor configurations. Separate chapter was added to distinguish upgrading capabilities of the residues catalytic cracking processes from those employing hydroprocessing. Upper limits on the content of carbon residue and metals in the feeds which can still be upgraded by the former processes differ markedly from those in the feeds which can be upgraded by hydroprocessing. It is necessary that the costs of modifications of catalytic cracking processes to accommodate heavier feeds are compared with that of hydroprocessing methods. ✏Monitoring of Gaseous Pollutants by Tunable Diode Lasers Book Summary : By now it has been nearly twenty years since the pioneering studies at the MIT-Lincoln Laboratories, Lexington, USA, demonstrated the unique capabilities of lead salt tunable diode lasers (TDL) for infrared absorption spectroscopy. The progress in the use of TDL instrumentation for a wide variety of scientific applications was described by a great number of papers since, however, comparatively few meetings were specifically devoted to this subject. In 1980 the conference on "High Resolution Infrared Spectroscopy Applications and Developments" at the National Bureau of Standards in Gaithersburg, USA, reviewed the state of the art of tunable diode lasers together with Fourier Transform Spectroscopy and other laser spectroscopic techniques. Three years later in 1983 the SPIE Conference in San Diego, USA, dedicated one meeting to "Tunable Diode Laser Development and Spectroscopy" Applications. It appeared appropriate after a further interval of three years to organize another meeting about this quickly advancing field. In November of 1986 an International Symposium on "Monitoring of Gaseous Pollutants by Tunable Diode Lasers" was organized by and held at the Fraunhofer-Insti tut fuer Physikalische Messtechnik in Freiburg, FRG. The main emphasis of this conference was put on the applications of TDL techniques to the solution of problems of environmental relevance : The measurement of atmospheric trace gases and the monitoring of exhaust gases from automobile and power plant stack emitters. The state of diode laser development and application of TDL instruments to scientific molecular spectroscopy were not directly subjects of the meeting.
