✏On Combat Book Summary : On Combat looks at what happens to the human body under the stresses of deadly battle the impact on the nervous system, heart, breathing, visual and auditory perception, memory - then discusses new research findings as to what measures warriors can take to prevent such debilitations so they can stay in the fight, survive, and win. A brief, but insightful look at history shows the evolution of combat, the development of the physical and psychological leverage that enables humans to kill other humans, followed by an objective examination of domestic violence in America. The authors reveal the nature of the warrior, brave men and women who train their minds and bodies to go to that place from which others flee. After examining the incredible impact of a few true warriors in battle, On Combat presents new and exciting research as to how to train the mind to become inoculated to stress, fear and even pain. Expanding on Lt. Col. Grossman s popular "Bulletproof mind" presentation, the book explores what really happens to the warrior after the battle, and shows how emotions, such as relief and self-blame, are natural and healthy ways to feel about having survived combat. A fresh and highly informative look at post traumatic stress syndrome (PTSD) details how to prevent it, how to survive it should it happen, how to come out of it stronger, and how to help others who are experiencing it. On Combat looks at the critical importance of the debriefing, when warriors gather after the battle to share what happened, critique, learn from each other and, for some, begin to heal from the horror. The reader will learn a highly effective breathing technique that not only steadies the warrior s mind and body before and during the battle, but can also be used afterwards as a powerful healing device to help separate the emotion from the memory.

It really is all that, and more... Outstanding isn't a strong enough word to describe it. If you are a soldier, a police officer, a martial artist, the holder of a concealed weapons permit, or just live in a bad neighborhood you really ought to read this book. ✏The Praetorian STARShip the untold story of the Combat Talon Book Summary : Jerry Thigpen's study on the history of the Combat Talon is the first effort to tell the story of this wonderfully capable machine. This weapons system has performed virtually every imaginable tactical event in the spectrum of conflict and by any measure is the most versatile C-130 derivative ever produced. First modified and sent to Southeast Asia (SEA) in 1966 to replace theater unconventional warfare (UW) assets that were limited in both lift capability and speed the Talon I quickly adapted to theater UW tasking including infiltration and resupply and psychological warfare operations into North Vietnam. After spending four years in SEA and maturing into a highly respected UW weapons system the Joint Chief of Staff (JCS) chose the Combat Talon to lead the night low-level raid on the North Vietnamese prison camp at Son Tay. Despite the outcome of the operation the Talon I cemented its reputation as the weapons system of choice for long-range clandestine operations. In the period following the Vietnam War United States Air Force (USAF) special operations gradually lost its political and financial support which was graphically demonstrated in the failed Desert One mission into Iran. Thanks to congressional supporters like Earl Hutto of Florida and Dan Daniel of Virginia funds for aircraft upgrades and military construction projects materialized to meet the ever-increasing threat to our nation. Under the leadership of such committed hard-driven officers as Brenci Uttaro Ferkes Meller and Thigpen the crew force became the most disciplined in our Air Force. It was capable of penetrating hostile airspace at night in a low-level mountainous environment covertly to execute any number of unconventional warfare missions.

✏Informing the Debate The Impact of Operations Other Than War on Combat Training Readiness Book Summary : Under a National Security Strategy of Engagement and Enlargement, the U.S. Army is likely to deploy more frequently in Operations Other Than War (OOTW) while the post Cold War drawdown enters its final phases. This study explores the impacts of OOTW on the training readiness of these units to conduct combat operations. It is based on a survey instrument distributed to students and faculty members of the U.S. Army War College. The unique density of War College students with OOTW experience in leadership positions provides a fertile basis to explore both benefits and costs associated with OOTW. Respondents answered questions in three distinct categories: (1) predeployment training readiness; (2) training readiness during OOTW, and (3) post deployment training readiness. The core findings of this project are that there are significant, but largely predictable, costs associated with OOTW; that units recovering from OOTW are frequently not afforded adequate time for recovery; and that standard reporting and evaluation means are frequently not used to identify, track and resolve training readiness shortfalls. Resulting pockets of unreadiness are thus more likely to occur as frequency of OOTW deployments increases and force structure and other resources decrease. Specific recommendations are offered to mitigate many of these negative impacts so that such pockets of unreadiness can be prevented.
