✏Textbook of Pediatric Neurology Book Summary : Neurological signs or symptoms are present in approximately 20% of all chil dren admitted to the hospital. These may be the reason for admission or may be part of preexisting and often unrelated problems. In ambulatory practice, acute neurological disease is not seen as frequently, but issues relating to normal and abnormal development are constantly being faced. For these reasons, familiarity with the progress of normal development and factors interfering with it, as well as knowledge of the major acute and chronic disorders of the nervous and neu romuscular systems, is important for any practitioner, specialist, or generalist who cares for children. The pathophysiology of neurological disorders in childhood is based on the same principles of the organization, structure, and function of the nervous sys tem as apply to adults. Two pitfalls are present for the student, however. First, the abnormalities are superimposed on a changing, developing brain, not a rather static, mature organ. The manifestations of the disease may vary, there fore, in seemingly unpredictable fashion depending on the rate of progression of the disorder and the rate and adequacy of the ongoing developmental changes in the nervous system. The second problem is the large number of unfa miliar conditions, many of which have no counterpart in adult neurology or medicine. These include developmental malformations, disorders specific to the neonatal period, and many hereditary and metabolic diseases.

✏Concepts in Neonatal Nutrition An Issue of Clinics in Perinatology Book Summary : Over the past several decades, advances in neonatal nutrition have focused on the provision of early parenteral nutrition and the development of formulas and supplements that most closely approximate maternal breast milk. The overall outcomes for infants, including premature infants, have greatly benefited from these advances, but there are still many nutritional unknowns that impact the lives of neonates. This is an exciting time in neonatal nutrition as the focus has shifted from survival and growth, which are still important goals, to effects of each micro/macronutrient on development, prevention of disease states such as ROP, the effects of neonatal nutrition on future health as an adult, and opportunities to improve long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes by optimal early nutrition. This issue focuses on aspects of enteral and parenteral nutrition that are at the forefront of neonatal care: assessing growth, parenteral nutrition components (including alternate lipid formulations), optimal storage and use of human milk (including donor milk), post-discharge nutrition, and the effects of various micro/macronutrients on long-term developmental outcomes. It is anticipated that the study and implementation of many of these novel concepts into the care of neonates, many of whom are severely premature, will be of value to practitioners, researchers, and, most of all, patients.

✏Handbook of Veterinary Neurology E Book Book Summary : Handbook of Veterinary Neurology provides quick access to vital information on neurologic conditions in a wide range of species, including canine, feline, bovine, caprine, equine, ovine, and porcine. A problem-oriented approach makes it easy to diagnose and treat neurologic problems in small and large animals. The coverage of disorders by problem, not by established disease diagnosis, emulates how animals present to the veterinary hospital and simplifies the formulation of a correct diagnosis. Within each chapter, discussions of neurologic disease include a review of the localization criteria and the diseases that can cause that problem, plus treatment and surgical techniques. Lead author Michael D. Lorenz brings decades of experience to neurologic assessment, using a diagnostic approach that requires minimal knowledge of neuroanatomy. A problem-based approach is organized by presenting sign rather than by condition, guiding you to logical conclusions regarding diagnosis and treatment. Algorithms diagram the logic necessary to localize lesions and to formulate diagnostic plans. Coverage of current diagnostic techniques includes the use of diagnostic tools, such as radiology, spinal fluid analysis, electrodiagnosis, and MR imaging. Case histories in each chapter present a problem and the results of the neurologic examination, then ask you to solve the problem by localizing the lesion, listing probable causes, and making a diagnostic plan. Answers are provided at the back of the book. A consistent format for each case history includes signalment, history, physical examination findings, and neurologic examination. A comprehensive appendix describes species and breeds that have a congenital predisposition for particular neurologic diseases. Extensive references make it easy to pursue in-depth research of more advanced topics. A companion website includes 20 narrated video clips with accompanying PowerPoint slides that correlate to the case histories in the book, covering neurologic assessment and clinical problems such as paresis of one limb, tetraparesis, stupor, seizures, ataxia of the head and limbs, and cranial nerve disorders. Two new co-authors, Jean Coates and Marc Kent, board-certified in neurology, enhance the credibility of this edition. A full-color design and numerous illustrations include enhanced images of neuroanatomy and pathology.
