✏Electronic and structural properties of nanoclusters Book Summary : Nanoclusters have gained a huge interest due to their unique properties. They represent an intermediate state between an atom and a solid, which manifests itself in their atomic configurations and electronic structure. The applications of nanoclusters require detailed understanding of their properties and strongly depend on the ability to control their synthesis process. Significant effort has been invested in modelling of nanoclusters properties. However, the complexity of these systems is such that many aspects of their growth process and properties are yet to be understood. My thesis focuses on describing structural and electronic properties of nanoclusters. In particular, the model for nanoparticles growth in plasma condition is developed and applied, allowing to describe the influence of the plasma conditions on the evaporation, growth and morphological transformation processes. The mechanism driving the morphology transition from icosahedral to decahedral phase is suggested based on force-fields models. Spectroscopic methods allow for precise characterization of nanoclusters and constitute an important tool for analysis of their electronic structure of valence band as well as core-states. The special attention in the thesis is paid to the core-states of nanoclusters and influences that affect them. In particular, the effects of local coordination, interatomic distances and confinement effects are investigated in metal nanoclusters by density functional theory methods. These effects and their contribution to spectroscopic features of nanoclusters in X-ray photoemission are modelled. The relation between the reactivity of nanoclusters and their spectroscopic features calculated in different approximations are revealed and explained. Ceria is a very important system for many applications due to the ability of cerium atoms to change their oxidation state depending on the environment. The shift of the oxidation state and its effects on the core-states is examined with X-ray absorption measurements and modelling allowing to build a rigid foundation for interpretation of the measured spectra and characterization of electronic structure of ceria nanoparticles.

✏Optical Properties of Multicomponent Antimony silver Nanoclusters Formed in Silica by Sequential Ion Implantation Book Summary : The linear and nonlinear optical properties of nanometer dimension metal colloids embedded in a dielectric depend explicitly on the electronic structure of the metal nanoclusters. The ability to control the electronic structure of the nanoclusters may make it possible to tailor the optical properties for enhanced performance. By sequential implantation of different metal ion species multi-component nanoclusters can be formed with significantly different optical properties than single element metal nanoclusters. The authors report the formation of multi-component Sb/Ag nanoclusters in silica by sequential implantation of Sb and Ag. Samples were implanted with relative ratios of Sb to Ag of 1:1 and 3:1. A second set of samples was made by single element implantations of Ag and Sb at the same energies and doses used to make the sequentially implanted samples. All samples were characterized using RBS and both linear and nonlinear optical measurements. The presence of both ions significantly modifies the optical properties of the composites compared to the single element nanocluster glass composites. In the sequentially implanted samples the optical density is lower, and the strong surface plasmon resonance absorption observed in the Ag implanted samples is not present. At the same time the nonlinear response of the these samples is larger than for the samples implanted with Sb alone, suggesting that the addition of Ag can increase the nonlinear response of the Sb particles formed. The results are consistent with the formation of multi-component Sb/Ag colloids.

A theoretical analysis based on experimental results helps to describe various stages of cluster evolution from their formation up to the deposition on the substrate and provides estimations for parameters of the processes involving clusters.

✏Gold Nanoclusters for Targeting Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus In Vivo Book Summary : Abstract: Widespread multidrug resistance caused by the abuse of antibiotics calls for novel strategies and materials. Gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) are scarcely explored for combating multidrug‐resistant (MDR) bacteria in vivo. We herein synthesized a novel class of AuNCs, namely quaternary ammonium (QA) capped AuNCs (QA‐AuNCs) as potent antibiotics selectively targeting MDR Gram‐positive bacteria, including methicillin‐resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin‐resistant Enterococci (VRE), in vivo. QA‐AuNCs kill bacteria through a combined physicochemical mechanism, and show excellent therapeutic effects in both a skin infection model and a bacteremia model induced by MRSA. In addition, owing to their intense fluorescence, QA‐AuNCs can be used for the discrimination of live/dead bacteria and bacteria counting, suggesting their potential for clinical theranostics. Abstract : The surface functionalization of gold nanoclusters with quaternary ammonium salts provides an antibiotic agent that is active towards multidrug‐resistant Gram‐positive bacteria both in vitro and in vivo. These modified nanoclusters show no detectable toxicity and do not induce drug resistance.
