✏Developing Library Collections for Today s Young Adults Book Summary : In the five years since the first edition of Developing Library Collections for Today’s Young Adults was published, numerous changes have taken place in the landscape of young adult literature and young adult library services. Informed by the professional activism—including the “We Need Diverse Books” (#wndb) movement—today’s professionals recognize that library collections for young adults are incomplete if they fail to address and reflect a diversity of racial, ethnic, and cultural identities; gender identities; sexual orientations; and identities related to ability and disability. Contemporary librarians working to diversify their collections select material in a number of formats and must consider the accessibility of both old and new media as they select titles and resources. Developing Library Collections for Today’s Young Adults, Ensuring Inclusion and Access, Second Edition, offers guidance to librarians confronted with an expanding universe of published material from which to select. With special emphasis on the principles of inclusion and accessibility, this new edition of Developing Library Collections includes guidelines for creating a young adult collection development policy, conducting a needs assessment, and evaluating and selecting print and nonprint material for the library’s YA collection.

✏Getting Wrecked Book Summary : Getting Wrecked provides a rich ethnographic account of women battling addiction as they cycle through jail, prison, and community treatment programs in Massachusetts. As incarceration has become a predominant American social policy for managing the problem of drug use, including the opioid epidemic, this book examines how prisons and jails have attempted concurrent programs of punishment and treatment to deal with inmates struggling with a diagnosis of substance use disorder. An addiction physician and medical anthropologist, Kimberly Sue powerfully illustrates the impacts of incarceration on women’s lives as they seek well-being and better health while confronting lives marked by structural violence, gender inequity, and ongoing trauma.

✏Chinese and Indian Medicine Today Book Summary : This book discusses Asian medicine, which puts enormous emphasis on prevention and preservation of health, and examines how, in recent decades, medical schools in Asia have been increasingly shifting toward a curative approach. It offers an ethnographic investigation of the scenarios in China and India and finds that modern students and graduates in these countries perceive Asian medicine to be as important as Western medicine. There is a growing tendency to integrate Asian medicine with Western medical thought in the academic curriculum that has led to a gradual decline of Asian medical thought and practices. At the same time, there has been a massive rise in patent drugs, health products and cosmetics being sold under the brand names of Asian medicine or herbal medicine. Most of these drugs and health products do not follow the classical formulas found in the Asian medical texts. The book analyses these texts and concludes that contemporary Asian medicine rarely follows the classical texts, and in fact uses Asian medicine brands to sell Western health products and practices. With a particular focus on the formal and professional sector of Chinese herbal medicine and Indian ayurvedic medicine in urban areas, this book appeals to a broad readership, including undergraduate students and academics as well as non-experts. Md. Nazrul Islam is an Associate Professor in the General Education Office, United International College, Beijing Normal University-Hong Kong Baptist University. He was a Visiting Associate Professor in the School of Population and Public Health, University of British Columbia (2015-16) during which time he completed this book manuscript.
