✏Analysis and Mitigation of Frequency Disturbances in an Islanded Microgrid Book Summary : The advent of microgrids has shifted the focus from centralized power generation to a more distributed manner, involving a mix of different distributed energy resources (DERs). Reciprocating engine driven synchronous generators (referred as gensets) are a common DER used for distributed generation. One of the key concerns with such power networks is the aspect of frequency regulation under large disturbances, especially in an islanded mode of operation, without the support of the utility grid. This works looks at possible solution methods for mitigating large frequency disturbances in an islanded microgrid. Due to steep load changes, the gensets undergo large frequency swings and can be even vulnerable to stalling. The benefits of smart loads are analyzed in this work to prevent such occurrence by temporarily reducing the transient overload on gensets. Another solution to mitigate large frequency deviation is the integration of energy storage system (ESS), but the effectiveness depends on its operation as a grid-forming or a grid-following unit. Important metrics such as frequency nadir during load changes in the islanded microgrid are computed to show the usefulness of ESS in islanded microgrids. For this purpose, analytical methods using reduced-order models are developed and found to provide accurate estimates of frequency deviations under power system disturbances. Generally, ESS units are interfaced with an inverter and when operated in grid-forming mode can offer desired dynamic frequency behavior in an islanded microgrid. Similarly, other inverter-based DERs can also provide good frequency regulation as they share the larger portion of the transient overload compared to gensets. However, under certain scenarios the inverter-based DERs are found to collapse due to this large transient loading and can bring down the whole microgrid system as a result. A better coordination between the different DERs in a mixed source microgrid is facilitated in this work to guarantee adequate inertial response. Such a scheme redistributes the unequal transient load sharing between gensets and inverter-based DERs and provides improved frequency regulation, without compromising on the survivability of islanded microgrids. The use of smart loads is also incorporated as an additional feature in the overall coordinated scheme for withstanding extreme scenarios.

✏Modeling Control and Stability Analysis of an Islanded Microgrid Book Summary : "Economic, technical, and environmental incentives are deriving the energy sector towards a new era of smart distribution networks where coordinated clusters of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and local loads form a microgrid, which has a significant potential to serve as the building block of the next generation power distribution networks. This thesis focuses on modeling, control, and stability analysis of a microgrid which consists of multiple electronically interfaced DER units. An important feature of a microgrid is its capability to disconnect from the host power grid and operate in the islanded mode. In the islanded mode of operation, undesirable dynamic interactions could occur between loads and electronically interfaced DER units due to lack of rotational inertia; in the absence of appropriate controls, these dynamic interactions may result in poor transient performance or even instability of an islanded microgrid. To address these challenges, this thesis proposes a control strategy to enhance transient performance and stability of a droop-controlled microgrid and to enable it to ride through transients caused by such system disturbances as load change, DER unit switching, and change of network topology. The dependency of dynamics on the droop gains, steady-state power flow, and network/load is studied in a droop-controlled DER unit. These dependencies result in poor transient performance or even instability of the network in the event of a disturbance in the system. To eliminate these dependencies, a gain-scheduled decoupling control strategy is proposed which alters the dynamic coupling between the DER unit and the rest of microgrid for better stability and transient performance. The impact of the proposed control on the DER and network dynamics is studied by calculating the eigenvalues of a test microgrid assuming the proposed control. The proposed control is shown to stabilize the microgrid for a range of operating condition. Further, this thesis develops a stability analysis method to study dynamic interaction of loads with a DER units and its impact on small-signal stability of an islanded microgrid. The purpose of this study is to design controls that are insensitive to load dynamics. The proposed stability analysis method: i) is a frequency-domain approach which models the source-load dynamic interaction via a closed-loop system of impedances and admittances; ii) provides a less conservative stability condition compared to existing methods, in the sense of having less restriction on the control system; and iii) establishes a robust stability margin in terms of perturbations in load parameters. The proposed method is used to examine small-signal stability of a test islanded microgrid. The findings of the frequency domain analysis are illustrated through time-domain simulations around the operating point on the system under study. Next, based on the proposed stability analysis method, a controller design methodology has been proposed for a DER unit to design a controller which enhances robust stability against load dynamics.Extensive case studies, based on time-domain simulations in the PSCAD/EMTDC software environment, are conducted to evaluate performance of the proposed controllers when the microgrid is subject to various disturbances such as load change, change in network topology, and DER unit outage. ✏Small Signal Modeling and Analysis of Microgrid Systems Book Summary : "This dissertation focuses on small-signal modeling and analysis of inverter based microgrid systems. The proposed microgrid consists of two microsources placed on two different buses. The buses are connected using a distribution feeder with some impedance. The proposed microgrid can operate with the grid support, or without the grid support. When operated without the grid support, the standalone system's microsources participate in controlling the system voltage and frequency. For a non-inertia source, such as the inverter, the load perturbations play an important role in system dynamics. In paper-I, such complex system was studied. In the grid-tied mode, the microsources share the load demand with other sources that are present in the main grid. The control algorithm for such system is much simpler than that of the islanded system. However, when aggregated in multi-bus system, prohibitively higher order state-space models are formed. In paper-II, a reduced order modeling of such systems was considered. Singular perturbation method was applied to identify the two time-scale property of the system. In paper-III, a similar approach was taken to develop a reduced order model of the islanded system that was developed in paper-I. Application of such reduced order models were illustrated by using them to simulate a modified IEEE-37 bus microgrid system. The islanded microgrids system0́9s stability is characterized in paper-IV by the Markov Jump Linear System Analysis. Conservative bounds on the expected value of the state were determined from a combination of the Markov process parameters, the dynamics of each linear system, and the magnitude of the impulses. ✏Optimal Sizing and Operation Planning of Microgrids and Operation Analysis of Charging Stations for Electric Vehicles Book Summary : Energy and transportation sectors are going through major changes as a result of technological advances, depletion of fossil fuels and climate change. With regard to the energy sector, the future smart grid is expected to be an interconnected network of small-scale and self-contained microgrids, in addition to a large-scale electric power backbone. By utilizing microsources, such as renewable energy sources, energy storage systems and vehicle-to-grid systems, microgrids target to satisfy the customers' energy demands in a safe, reliable, economic and environmentally friendly way. With regard to the changes in the transportation sector, internal combustion engine vehicles are expected to be gradually replaced by electric vehicles, which are considered to be a promising solution for mitigating the impact of transportation sector on the environment. The presented thesis deals with two main topics; the first one refers to the optimal sizing and operation planning of microgrids comprising various urban building types, while the second one is related to the operation of fast charging stations for electric vehicles that are located in densely populated areas. The first objective of the thesis is to examine the effect of energy exchanges among interconnected buildings with diverse load profiles on the sizes of power equipment to be installed at the buildings. To this end, a mixed integer linear programming optimization framework is presented that determines the optimal capacities of photovoltaic panels, energy storage systems, and inverters, as well as the optimum management of the generated power. As a first step, the benefits of cooperation among buildings that are already interconnected through an existing point of common coupling is examined. The cooperation benefits are derived by comparing the buildings' costs when they participate in the microgrid with their costs when they operate as separate entities. As a second step, a different microgrid topology is proposed where energy exchanges take place through a common DC bus. In this way, neighboring buildings that are not already physically connected can be members of the same microgrid. Moreover, the optimization results for the new topology are obtained by using the Nash bargaining method, through which the benefits of cooperation are equally distributed among the participating members. Finally, the possible integration of new buildings in the existing microgrid at a later time point is also examined. The second objective of the thesis is to provide an accurate operation analysis of fast charging stations for electric vehicles. To this end, a novel queuing theory-based model is presented that classifies the various electric vehicles by their battery size. As a first step, it is analyzed a charging station that contains DC outlets, and the electric vehicles recharge their batteries up to the maximum possible level. The proposed model takes into account the arrival rates and state of charge of the electric vehicles' batteries when arriving at the station, in order to compute the maximum number of customers that can be served, subject to an upper bound for the waiting time in the queue. In addition, a charging strategy is proposed, which allows the charging station to serve more customers without any increase in the queue waiting time. As a second step, it is considered that the charging station can serve both DC and AC electric vehicle classes, while a more flexible way is adopted for denoting the customers' recharging patterns. Based on these additional novelties, the overall profit margin of the charging station operator, and the queue waiting times of the DC and AC classes are calculated under two different pricing policies.

A frequency and voltage isolation technique between microgrid and utility is shown by using a back-to- back converter. For accurate load sharing, the droop gains have to be high, which has the potential of making the system unstable. To improve this situation, a supplementary droop controller is designed. Two methods are proposed for load sharing in an autonomous microgrid in rural network with high R/X ratio lines.
