Adsorption and membrane separations are desirable technologies for a variety of separation processes from aspects of moderate capital cost, high energy efficiency, and low environmental impacts. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a type of crystalline porous material, exhibit great advantages in separations due to their tunable pore structure and versatile chemistry. However, because of the lack of understanding the relationship between MOFs' structures and functions, MOF materials have not been fully utilized as they should. To improve the performance of MOFs in gas adsorption, two-dimensional MOFs with different functionalities were prepared through a simple room-temperature synthesis. According to the gas adsorption test, it was found that the surface functionality of 2D MOFs was more crucial for selective gas adsorption, while the surface area determined the gas uptake. The nitro-functionalized MOF nanosheets showed ideal selectivity of 91.5, 18.0, and 5.1 for CO2/N2, CO2/CH4, and CH4/N2 separations, respectively, which was among the highest comparing to previously studied MOFs. To apply MOFs in liquid adsorption involving large molecules, MOF nanosheets with open metal sites were synthesized on cellulose substrates. The obtained MOF composite adsorbents exhibited selective adsorption of dyes in organic solvent, which was attributed to the coordinate interaction between dye molecules and open metal sites in the frameworks. To achieve continuous separation processes, MOF membranes were fabricated by growing a MOF layer on porous polymeric supports. Polyethyleneamine crosslinked polydopamine coating was developed for polymer surface modification. The obtained [email protected] membranes exhibited methanol flux of 1.9 L∙m-2∙h-1∙bar-1 and methylene blue rejection over 99%, which was better than commercial membranes. The optimized synthetic procedures of 2D MOFs and [email protected] composites unveiled the key parameters in controlling the structure, morphology, and functionality of MOF materials to meet the demands in various separation processes, which is believed to guide the design and fabrication of high-performance MOF materials for broad applications.

✏Hydrogen Physisorptive Storage in Metal organic Frameworks MOFs Book Summary : Generation of power from fossil fuels produces large amounts of carbon dioxide which is a major contributor to global warming and many other environmental problems. Alternative sources of energy are available but fossil fuels remain the main source of energy for on-board energy generation. One alternative source that has gained great popularity in recent years has been hydrogen. The characteristics which it possesses make it an ideal alternative to fossil fuels for on-board energy generation and also for stationary (portable) power applications. Widespread use of hydrogen as an energy carrier can only be realised once a reliable storage method which is safe and affordable becomes available. Such a storage medium should have sufficient hydrogen storage capacity, fast kinetics, and be capable of delivering hydrogen gas to a fuel cell at ambient or near-ambient conditions. This study investigated the storage of hydrogen using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). MOFs are a class of porous inorganic-organic crystalline materials that store hydrogen by adsorption. What makes MOFs such an attractive option for hydrogen storage is that they have exceptionally high surface areas and porosity, as well as tunable pore sizes and internal surfaces. MOFs have provided successful hydrogen storage at cryogenic temperatures (77 K) and a major challenge is to reach high storage capacities at ambient temperatures and acceptable pressures. The HySA Infrastructure Centre of Competence (CoC), one of three centres of competence established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) to implement the National Hydrogen and Fuel Cells Strategy, is tasked with R&D on hydrogen generation, storage and distribution. A major part of the hydrogen storage R&D is the development of MOFs for hydrogen storage with the ultimate aim of using the developed MOFs for practical applications, including fuel cell vehicles and portable power applications, using metals that promote the beneficiation of South African mineral resources. The MOFs that were investigated in this study are zinc-based MOF (Zn-MOF, MOF-5), zirconium-based MOF (Zr-MOF, UiO-66) and chromium-based MOF (Cr-MOF, MIL-101). These MOFs were chosen because they were envisaged as potential hydrogen storage options. MOF-5 in particular was seen as an ideal starting point for this study as it has been reported to have high surface area, permanent porosity, good thermal stability and a high synthetic yield. In addition, MOF-5 is amongst the most widely investigated MOFs for hydrogen storage. In this study, MOF-5 with high crystallinity and good morphology was synthesised using either N,N-diethylformamide (DEF) or dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. As DMF is a cheaper solvent than DEF the synthesis conditions were optimised for the DMF-synthesised MOF-5 and detailed analyses performed. It was discovered at some point that MOF-69c was produced as a product instead of MOF-5. Successful transition from MOF-69c to MOF-5 was achieved by employing a simple heat treatment. Due to the moisture sensitivity of MOF-5 which results from the weak interaction of Zn metal with O atoms in the framework, MOF-5 and other MOFs with different metal centres were synthesised in an attempt to overcome the moisture sensitivity problem. This led to the investigation of Zr-MOF (UiO-66) as it had the best results and had been reported to be moisture stable. Zr-MOF was synthesised using a solvothermal synthesis procedure and a microwave-assisted synthesis approach. The solvothermal synthesis was optimised using formic acid as a modulator and the microwave-assisted synthesis provided a rapid synthesis technique. The optimised synthesis produced octahedral-shaped Zr-MOF crystals of high crystallinity, with excellent moisture and thermal stability. As the synthesis of MOF-5 and Zr-MOF employed DMF, an environmentally harsh solvent, the need to pursue a greener MOF synthesis led to the investigation of Cr-MOF (MIL-101). A successful modulated synthesis of Cr-MOF using formic acid instead of HF as modulator, and water as the reaction solvent was achieved. The synthesised MOFs were characterised and their hydrogen adsorption capacity measured at 77 K and at pressures up to 1 bar. It was found that MOF-5 had a maximum hydrogen uptake of 1.60 wt% (DEF-synthesised MOF-5) and 1.40 wt% (DMF-synthesised MOF-5) whilst MOF-69c had a maximum uptake of 1.90 wt%. Zr-MOF had a maximum hydrogen uptake of 1.50 wt% and a maximum hydrogen uptake of 1.92 wt% was achieved for the Cr-MOF. Hydrogen uptake was found to be related to the quality of the MOF crystals and also directly related to the surface area, pore volume and/or pore size of the particular MOF.

✏Progress and Prospect of Adsorptive Removal of Heavy Metal Ions from Aqueous Solution Using Metal organic Frameworks A Review of Studies from the Last Decade Book Summary : Abstract: The efficient removal of heavy metals (HMs) from the environment has become an important issue from both biological and environmental perspectives. Recently, porous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), combining central metals and organic ligands, have been proposed as promising materials in the capture of various toxic substances, including HMs, due to their unique characteristics. Here we review recent progress in the field of water remediation from the perspective of primary HMs (including divalent metals and variable-valent metals) in water pollution and the corresponding MOFs (including virgin and modified MOFs, magnetic MOFs composites and so on) that can remove these metals from water. The reported values of various MOFs for adsorption of heavy metal ions were 8.40–313mgPb(II) g −1, 0.65–2173mg Hg(II) g −1, 3.63–145mg Cd(II) g −1, 14.0–127mg Cr(III) g −1, 15.4–145mg Cr(VI) g −1, 49.5–123mg As(III) g −1, and 12.3–303mg As(V) g −1 . The main adsorption mechanisms associated with these processes are chemical (including coordination interaction, chemical bonding and acid-base interactions) and physical (including electrostatic interaction, diffusion and van der Waals force) adsorption, which were discussed in detailed. Further efforts should be made towards expanding the repertoire of MOFs that effectively remove multiple targeted HMs, as well as exploring possible applications of MOFs in the removal of HMs from non-aqueous environments. There have been extensive environmental technologies developed to eliminate an aqueous bromate precursor and bromate itself before and after the ozonation. However, these approaches are considered as difficult and ineffective ways of removal of bromate accompanied by several drawbacks. The catalytic reduction of bromate in the presence of NaBH4 is one of the promising techniques which not only removes the bromate, it also converts it to bromide. In addition, using solid H2-generating compounds is relatively safe and cost-effective. In recent times, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted considerable attention having a variety of interesting structures and various applications in surface and groundwater. This research study investigated the reactivity of Ni(HBTC)(4,4u2019-bipy) with NaBH4 for the bromate reduction in an aqueous environment. The metal-organic framework, supporting with immobilized Ni porosity, was synthesized using 4,4u2019-bipyridine and 1,3,5-tricarboxylic acid in DMF at 100u00b0C for 24 hours. MOFs in the presence of NaBH4 have shown accelerated reduction kinetics and complete conversion of bromate to bromide in 1 hour with a rate constant of 0.140 min-1. Moreover, the study found out that the increase in catalyst loading and NaBH4 loading resulted in further enhancement of bromate reduction. The above-mentioned results indicate that Ni(HBTC)(4,4u2019-bipy) with NaBH4 could be a promising environmental technology for the removal of bromate in water and wastewater systems.

In this thesis 17O solid state NMR (SSNMR) spectroscopy is used to differentiate chemically and, under favorite circumstances, crystallographically nonequivalent oxygens and to follow the phase transitions in MOF-based materials. Several cost-effective approaches were used to prepare 17O-labelled MOFs. The metal centers of MOFs, including 47/49Ti, 67Zn, 91Zr, 115In and 139La, are also studied by SSNMR spectroscopy. It is demonstrated that SSNMR of metal ions is sensitive to the environment of metal cations. As a result, SSNMR is a useful tool to refine MOF structure, differentiate non-equivalent metal sites and probe the local structure of metal cations. SSNMR spectroscopy of the metal ions should be added to the arsenal of the techniques for MOFs characterization.

✏Multi layer Connectivity Based Atom Contribution Method for Charge Assignments in Metal organic Frameworks MOFS Book Summary : Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) show great promise in a variety of energy applications including gas separations and storage. With several thousand MOFs already discovered, and more being discovered, experimental determination of promising materials could be a great challenge. To this end, molecular simulations can play a critically important role to facilitate the discovery of promising candidates. In molecular simulations, to describe intermolecular interactions, Pauli repulsion and van der Waals interactions as well as Coulombic contributions are typically used. Specifically, for the Coulombic contribution, static point charge models have been widely used and accurate charge assignments to the framework atoms are therefore needed. The current method used to assign charge generally involves computationally expensive quantum mechanical (QM) calculations. As the number of frameworks continues to grow, using these methods of charge assignment could be computationally limited. In this study, we strive to expand on the connectivity-based atom contribution (CBAC) method proposed by Q. Xu and C. Zhong to develop an efficient, robust, and accurate approach for charge assignment. Q. Xu and C. Zhong estimated framework charges in MOFs by taking a set of training MOFs (30), calculating each atom’s local binding environment (i.e., first layer connectivity) and the corresponding average charge, and creating a database to assign charge based on the pattern of the first layer connectivity. This database was applied to a small subset of 13 MOFs and demonstrated its potential to accurately and efficiently assign charge. The results from this pioneer study are promising, but may not be comprehensive enough. With roughly 3000 MOFs in the Computationally-Ready, Experimental (CoRE) MOF database having DFT assigned charge, an extensive analysis of atom connectivity was completed to build a comprehensive charge database. Moreover, to improve the accuracy of the charge assignment, second layer connectivity was also included. We also examined zeroth layer (i.e., element type) in order to provide charges for cases in which there was a connectivity not described in the database. Overall, the goal was to expand on the originally proposed CBAC method with the consideration of second layer connectivity to provide efficient and reliable charge assignment and subsequently accurate simulation results for newly discovered MOFs with diverse topologies and chemical composition.
