✏Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design Book Summary : Every day we interact with thousands of consumer products. We not only expect them to perform their functions safely, reliably, and efficiently, but also to do it so seamlessly that we don’t even think about it. However, with the many factors involved in consumer product design, from the application of human factors and ergonomics principles to reducing risks of malfunction and the total life cycle cost, well, the process just seems to get more complex. Edited by well-known and well-respected experts, the two-volumes of Handbook of Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design simplify this process. The first volume, Human Factors and Ergonomics in Consumer Product Design: Methods and Techniques, outlines the how to incorporate Human Factors and Ergonomics (HF/E) principles and knowledge into the design of consumer products in a variety of applications. It discusses the user-centered design process, starting with how mental workload affects every day interactions with consumer products and what lessons may be applied to product design. The book then highlights the ever-increasing role of information technology, including digital imaging, video and other media, and virtual reality applications in consumer product design. It also explores user-centered aspect of consumer product development with discussions of user-centered vs. task-based approach, articulation and assessment of user requirements and needs, interaction with design models, and eco design. With contributions from a team of researchers from 21 countries, the book covers the current state of the art methods and techniques of product ergonomics. It provides an increased knowledge of how to apply the HF/E principles that ultimately leads to better product design.

✏Environmental Diversity in Architecture Book Summary : This book takes the position that the dynamic of the architectural environment is a key aspect of good design, yet one which is not well anticipated or understood. Environmental variety is a design characteristic closely related to our experience of architecture - an architecture of the senses. Each chapter demonstrates how an understanding of a particular context or environmental characteristic in dynamic terms informs design. The book is an antidote to the misconceptions of 'optimum' environmental performance or fixed criteria, instead embracing the richness of environmental variety.

✏Corporate Sustainability as a Challenge for Comprehensive Management Book Summary : Sustainability has become a topic of global relevance: Corporations and other economically acting organizations increasingly need to realize economic, environmental and social objectives in order to survive. Supplementary to "classical" environmental management, realizing corporate sustainability requires comprehensive approaches which allow the integration of social and economic aspects. Such concepts can be found e.g. in international excellence models mainly based on a TQM thinking but also in the field of human factors in organizational design and management. Understood as systems approaches, they include the interests of all relevant stakeholders with a mid- or long-term time perspective and are thus highly linked with the principles of sustainable development. In this book internationally leading scientists discuss the issue of sustainability from their perspective, resulting in an innovative view on different management approaches under the umbrella of corporate sustainability.

✏Outliers Book Summary : Learn what sets high achievers apart -- from Bill Gates to the Beatles -- in this #1 bestseller from "a singular talent" (New York Times Book Review). In this stunning book, Malcolm Gladwell takes us on an intellectual journey through the world of "outliers"--the best and the brightest, the most famous and the most successful. He asks the question: what makes high-achievers different? His answer is that we pay too much attention to what successful people are like, and too little attention to where they are from: that is, their culture, their family, their generation, and the idiosyncratic experiences of their upbringing. Along the way he explains the secrets of software billionaires, what it takes to be a great soccer player, why Asians are good at math, and what made the Beatles the greatest rock band. Brilliant and entertaining, Outliers is a landmark work that will simultaneously delight and illuminate.

✏Tools for Working with Guidelines Book Summary : This volume contains the papers presented at the International Workshop on Tools for Working with Guidelines, (TFWWG 2000), held in Biarritz, France, in October 2000. It is the final outcome of the International Special Interest Group on Tools for Working with Guidelines. Human-computer interaction guidelines have been recognized as a uniquely relevant source for improving the usability of user interfaces for interactive systems. The range of interactive techniques exploited by these interactive systems is rapidly expanding to include multimodal user interfaces, virtual reality systems, highly interactive web-based applications, and three-dimensional user interfaces. Therefore, the scope of guidelines' sources is rapidly expanding as well, and so are the tools that should support users who employ guidelines to ensure some form of usability. Tools For Working With Guidelines (TFWWG) covers not only software tools that designers, developers, and human factors experts can use to manage multiple types of guidelines, but also looks at techniques addressing organizational, sociological, and technological issues.

✏Patient Safety Book Summary : When you are ready to implement measures to improve patient safety, this is the book to consult. Charles Vincent, one of the world's pioneers in patient safety, discusses each and every aspect clearly and compellingly. He reviews the evidence of risks and harms to patients, and he provides practical guidance on implementing safer practices in health care. The second edition puts greater emphasis on this practical side. Examples of team based initiatives show how patient safety can be improved by changing practices, both cultural and technological, throughout whole organisations. Not only does this benefit patients; it also impacts positively on health care delivery, with consequent savings in the economy. Patient Safety has been praised as a gateway to understanding the subject. This second edition is more than that – it is a revelation of the pervading influence of health care errors, and a guide to how these can be overcome. "... The beauty of this book is that it describes the complexity of patient safety in a simple coherent way and captures the breadth of issues that encompass this fascinating field. The author provides numerous ways in which the reader can take this subject further with links to the international world of patient safety and evidence based research... One of the most difficult aspects of patient safety is that of implementation of safer practices and sustained change. Charles Vincent, through this book, provides all who read it clear examples to help with these challenges" From a review in Hospital Medicine by Dr Suzette Woodward, Director of Patient Safety. Human Computer Interaction: Communication, Cooperation, and Application Design focuses on the informative and communicative aspects of computer use. A larger number of contributions is concerned with computer-supported cooperation using a wide variety of different techniques. In keeping with the increased focus of HCI International '99 on internet issues and aspects of the global information society, many papers in this volume are centered around information and communication networks and their implications for work, learning, and every-day activities. Due to the growing number and diversity of groups utilizing modern information technologies, issues of accessibility and design for all are becoming more and more pertinent. A range of papers in this volume address these issues and provide the latest research and development results.

✏Expert Thinking Book Summary : The major purpose of this special issue is to highlight the topic of expert thinking. The issue samples the diversity of domains of expertise and includes a good sample of paradigms and methods, with articles that involve think aloud problem solving tasks, computer simulations, and traditional learning or memory tasks. It also has articles that illustrate the diversity of settings in which expertise is practised and can be studied, ranging from the traditional psychology laboratory to cognition in "the wild". Reasoning is generally regarded as an aggregate of fundamental processes that are involved in such complex behaviours as decision-making, planning, and problem solving. Are complex reasoning processes per se the defining hallmark of expertise? Articles in this special issue particularly highlight ways in which reasoning does depend on memory, e.g., for musical scores (Chaffin & Imreh) and for chess games (Gobet), and does become more efficient over time (Clarke & Lamberts). However, experts also use quite general strategies, such as hypothesis testing and the combination of forward and backward chaining (Clarke & Lamberts, Ball, Evans, Dennis & Ormerod).
