✏Making Magic Book Summary : Since the emergence of religious studies and the social sciences as academic disciplines, the concept of "magic" has played a major role in defining religion and in mediating the relation of religion to science. Across these disciplines, magic has regularly been configured as a definitively non-modern phenomenon, juxtaposed to distinctly modern models of religion and science. Yet this notion of magic has remained stubbornly amorphous. In Making Magic, Randall Styers seeks to account for the extraordinary vitality of scholarly discourse purporting to define and explain magic despite its failure to do just that. He argues that this persistence can best be explained in light of the Western drive to establish and secure distinctive norms for modern identity, norms based on narrow forms of instrumental rationality, industrious labor, rigidly defined sexual roles, and the containment of wayward forms of desire. Magic has served to designate a form of alterity or deviance against which dominant Western notions of appropriate religious piety, legitimate scientific rationality, and orderly social relations are brought into relief. Scholars have found magic an invaluable tool in their efforts to define the appropriate boundaries of religion and science. On a broader level, says Styers, magical thinking has served as an important foil for modernity itself. Debates over the nature of magic have offered a particularly rich site at which scholars have worked to define and to contest the nature of modernity and norms for life in the modern world.

✏Jesus and Magic Book Summary : It has become standard in modern interpretation to say that Jesus performed miracles, and even mainline scholarly interpreters classify Jesus's healings and exorcisms as miracles. Some highly regarded scholars have argued, more provocatively, that the healings and exorcisms were magic, and that Jesus was a magician. As Richard Horsley points out, if we make a critical comparison between modern interpretation of Jesus's healing and exorcism, on the one hand, and the Gospel stories and other ancient texts, on the other hand, it becomes clear that the miracle and magic are modern concepts, products of Enlightenment thinking. Jesus and Magic asserts that Gospel stories do not have the concepts of miracle and magic. What scholars constructed as magic turns out to have been ritual practices such as songs (incantations), medicines (potions), and appeals to higher powers for protection. Horsley offers a critical reading of the healing and exorcism episodes in the Gospel stories. This reading reveals a dynamic relationship between Jesus the healer, the trust of those coming for healing, and their support networks in local communities. Horsley's reading of the Gospel stories gives little or no indication of divine intervention. Rather, the healing and exorcism stories portray healings and exorcisms.

Or will their expanding horizons prove to be their biggest danger yet? Join the beloved sisters from FLAME in a new tale about growing up, moving on, and finding the courage within. Sparks fly when rising desperation leads Isadora and Maximillion to attend a political delegation together in the Southern Network. She’s determined to create a pact for peace and save lives, but when events spiral into far more dangerous territory, she realizes the only witch she can trust is Maximillion. Can they work together, or will everything fall apart? Meanwhile, her sisterwitch Sanna is out of her depth in an unfamiliar world of volatile goddesses and buried history. Facing an unwinnable battle against Prana, the ruthless goddess of the sea, Sanna roots through history, only to discover that Prana isn’t the only enemy they face. In a world embroiled with war on all fronts, can the sisterwitches do their part to bring peace and freedom to Antebellum? Or will all their best efforts fail in the bigger machinations of goddesses and witches? FREEDOM is the final book in the Dragonmaster trilogy. ✏The Magic of Shapeshifting Book Summary : SHAPESHIFTERS are people with animal medicine, people who can connect with and use their animal powers. Those with access to this magical power can shift mentally, astrally, or even physically into their power animal or totem. Rosalyn Greene's ability to shift, both mentally and astrally, combined with her extensive study of the secret shapeshifting folklore, has resulted in this fascinating examination of all aspects and forms of shifting. This unique book helps you realize your potential for being a shapeshifter, giving detailed explanations about how the various forms of shifting occur. She shows you how to distinguish powerful visions, anxiety attacks, and imagination from real shifting, as well as how to recognize the warning signs of an imminent shift. Since there can be dangers and risks on both the mundane and psychic levels when you pursue the path of a shifter, many of the potential dangers associated with specific practices are carefully outlined. Shapeshifting is a spiritual journey, a very tough one, but very rewarding, linking us with both the fundamental power of animals and with the higher self. It has a purpose and reality far beyond simply using shifter abilities for earthly benefits; it can lead us through the unseen veil that separates us from our Selves.

✏The Fairy Tale Revisited Book Summary : What are Fairy Tales? What do they mean? Despite conventional wisdom, they are not ageless and universal stories. Through the adaptation of oral studies into literary texts, these tales have been edited, rewritten and modified according to the zeitgeist of the authors. They have been designed within particular socio-historical and cultural contexts. The book looks at the literary work of Charles Perrault in seventeenth-century France and the Brothers Grimm in nineteenth-century Germany. It also presents the Fairy Tale Ballets by Marius Petipa who choreographed Sleeping Beauty and the Nutcracker for the Imperial Ballet in Russia. Finally, under a postmodern infatuation with convention, it discusses contemporary Dance-Theatre Fairy Tales works, such as Pina Bausch's Bluebeard, Maguy Marin's Cinderella, and Kinematic's The Maiden Without Hands.

✏The Position of Magic in Selected Medieval Spanish Texts Book Summary : â oeIt is difficult to assess an explanation of a belief, or a belief system in words, â Tobienne begins, â oeand harder still to assign signification to such inexplicable conviction[s].â This book addresses the often blurred line[s] between magic, religion, and science within Spanish literature and history, and is divided into three parts. The first section offers a brief overview of Spanish history from the fifth century through the seventh century and looks at the divide between â oewhiteâ and â oeblackâ magic. White magic is often attributed to a divine agency, whereas black magic is the result of dark or demonic influences. The second part of the book looks at Alfonso X (also known as el Sabio, or â oethe Wiseâ ) and his Las Siete Partidas and Lapidario, and the role of how magic was received in the Spanish university system and translating centers and spaces within Alfonsoâ (TM)s court. The final section examines two poems: Auto de Los Reyes Magos and the Vida de Santa MarÃ-a Egipciaca in terms of the white magic concepts of mirabilia and miracula. Collectively, these poems, alongside Bishop Isidore of Sevilleâ (TM)s Etymologiae, contribute to the discourse of a Medieval Spain and its rich, intellectual history and moreover, provide a launching pad into this discussion regarding a small window of quasi-tolerance in Spain amidst Muslims, Jews, and Christians.
