✏Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Clinical Urology Book Summary : Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a clinical condition marked by an increase in size of the prostate gland. Frequent urination, inability to urinate and loss of bladder control are certain symptoms of BPH. The underlying mechanism responsible for the appearance of these symptoms is the enlarged prostate pressing on to the urethra. This makes the passage of urine out of the bladder difficult. Obesity, type 2 diabetes, family history and erectile dysfunction are certain risk factors. If BPH is not resolved, it may lead to urinary tract infections. The diagnosis of BPH is based on a rectal exam, a history of lower urinary tract symptoms, and an exclusion of other conditions with similar symptoms. Kidney function tests and prostate specific antigen allows kidney damage and prostate cancer to be evaluated. The management of this condition requires certain lifestyle alterations, such as moderating the consumption of caffeine products and alcohol, decreasing fluid intake before bedtime, increasing physical activity, among others. If the problem is not solved through medication, a transurethral resection of the prostate or a prostatic artery embolization may be needed. This book elucidates the concepts and innovative models around prospective developments with respect to diagnosis and treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia. Through this book, we attempt to further enlighten the readers about the new concepts in clinical urology.

✏Treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia Book Summary : Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is an age-related, nonmalignant condition that may lead to bothersome lower urinary tract symptoms. The standard treatment of BPH has been ordinary loop transurethral prostatectomy, but new therapies have been developed as a combined result of research, technological advances, and the cumulative experience of urological surgeons. Among the most promising therapeutic alternatives to ordinary loop resection are those that deliver topical or interstitial heat to prostatic tissue. Transurethral microwave thermotherapy, visual laser ablation with the Nd:YAG laser, high-intensity focused ultrasound, and transurethral electrovaporization are some of the techniques described in this book. These innovative procedures, employed by skilled urologists using state-of-the-art instruments, hold forth the promise of improved quality of life for BPH patients and represent significant advances in the field of urology.

This is a critical distinction between this book and any other Complementary & Alternative Medicine (CAM) books published to date. Each section of the book provides an easy to reference guide into the topic of interest for the individual that works in urology. The various sub-specialty groups in urology are adequately represented, which allows for a physician to rapidly and thoroughly investigate their topic of interest regardless of whether it is fertility, bladder cancer, or prostate disease. Rather than having to sort through the now thousands of articles published yearly on CAM in medicine, this volume focuses first on the specialty and secondarily how it compares to the overall CAM literature. Each chapter includes a summary page that will allow the physician a rapid review of the subject with a patient, colleague or student. The practical nature of this book in urology also cannot be overstated. Chapters include a general overview of the CAM agent, whether or not it has data in medicine and urology, and a list of potential drug interactions and specific clinical scenarios where it can be utilized or discouraged in the specialty. Complementary & Alternative Medicine for Prostate and Urologic Health represents a gold standard text for use in teaching, not only for the students interested in the urologic field but for all current urologic health providers.
