Leadership, Work, and the Dark Side of Personality uses an interpersonal psychological perspective to unite general theories of both personality and leadership. By focusing in on the interpersonal, the book characterizes social behaviors by their agency (how dominant they are) and by their communion (how relational and nurturing they are). It argues that these interpersonal dimensions align closely with the traditional structure of leader behaviors—both task-related and relationship oriented behaviors—and uses those frameworks to orient trait theory for both normal-range personality traits and subclinical (dark side) traits. After overviewing the history of leadership theory, reviewing normal range personality traits (Extraversion, Neuroticism, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness and Openness) and subclinical traits, such as the Dark Triad (Narcissism, Machiavellianism and Psychopathy), the book moves on to thoroughly bring the perspective of interpersonal psychology to bear on questions of personality and leadership, and ends by narrowing in on how the dark side of personality affects the leadership process—for better and for worse. Discusses the role of personality in job performance and satisfaction Critiques both historical and contemporary leadership approaches Includes lesser known approaches to leadership, such as paternalism and empowerment Narrows in on the dark side of personality and the role it plays in the leadership process Distinguishes between effective leaders and successful leaders

Contrary to the notion that leaders contribute to positive behaviour within organisations, this book reflects growing interest in the ‘dark side’ of leadership: the unethical and immoral personalities that can reside in positions of power. Drawing on empirical and theoretical analysis, the author examines immorality within leadership and the underlying causes behind this behaviour. Focusing on the impact of institutional pressures, this book analyses how such behaviour is influenced by internal and external factors. By employing a theoretical framework, the

This edited collection surveys and analyses the multidimensional problem of Hubris syndrome, and its deleterious effect on leadership within organisations. The study develops an extended metaphor of the social and political ill of Hubris as a virulent, communicable disease of dysfunctional leadership, illustrating its ubiquity and potential for serious harm. Taking a biological perspective to understand the possible underlying mechanisms as well as the environments in which hubris has been found to thrive, contributors emphasise the notion of prevention over

The scientific field of leadership and followership is fast evolving and has seen several interesting developments over recent years. The early heroic views of leadership are slowly turning into more nuanced perspectives, including the understanding that leadership and followership are mutually dependent on each other. Likewise, there is a growing awareness that the focus on the positive side of leadership and followership can be fruitfully complemented by a focus on the darker sides of these constructs. According to the latest

This book highlights the fact that leaders do indeed affect the performance of organizations or the well-being of society for better or worse--to cast either a shadow or light by the exercise of their leadership. Modern psychology with its theories of human behavior, which does not acknowledge the existence of the spiritual realm, cannot explain the carnage and evil often associated with the dark side of leadership. This book focuses on the dark side of leadership in a multidimensional manner

In recent years, scholars have focused more on the "dark sides of leadership." Both the negative and positive aspects of the relationship between leaders and followers are considered. But the relationship between leaders and followers is also influenced by the context in which the relationship occurs. Organizational aspects such as culture and structures are studied in relation to how negative leadership develops. Organizations, just like humans, are able to develop justifications for their actions, to self-aggrandize by claiming their exclusivity.

Much like Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences, Maulding-Green and Leonard have, in Leadership Intelligence: The Journey to Your True North, postulated a theory regarding the age old question, ‘are leaders born or are leaders made?’ This theory is predicated on the idea that there is a genetic predisposition toward leadership via the vehicle of imprinting. The five critical factors which undergird the tenets of Leadership Intelligence, are delineated and developed through the lens of the soft skills of a leader. There

"Robert Hogan is known for suggesting that the most consequential question in human affairs is, "Who should lead?" History is riddled with examples of how the survival of collectivities - schools, governments, nations, organizations - is determined by who is in charge. Good leaders turn businesses drowning in red ink into industry juggernauts; they transform "B" players into high-performers with minimal infighting and seamless cooperation. Yet history also shows that leadership strengths coincide with deeply troubled dark sides that result
