✏Dynamic Business Process Management in the Knowledge Economy Book Summary : This book describes modern dynamic business process management (dynamic BPM), which is considerably different from traditional BPM from 20, 10, or even 5 years ago. It demonstrates why traditional BPM is not sufficient in the knowledge economy (KE), while also highlighting the opportunities provided by dynamic BPM – the form of management that practitioners and academics deal with on a daily basis. This involves mastering and implementing e.g. case management, process mining, and RPA, and integrating them with knowledge management. But more importantly, dynamic BPM makes full use of the dynamism of knowledge workers: the people who actually create innovative products and services tailored to the specific needs of clients. The book was primarily written for those managers who see advantageous opportunities amidst the ongoing changes. Accordingly, it focuses more on innovations emerging from practice than on theoretical, academic reflection. In addition to helping organizations operating in the KE to prepare for and implement process management, the book is intended as a source of inspiration for process management researchers and iBPMS system vendors.

✏The Information Revolution Book Summary : How does the Internet affect authoritarian regimes? This dissertation is a large-n study on comparative democratization, arguing that while the Internet has made mass mobilization easier than ever, its spread has also counter-intuitively allowed savvy authoritarian regimes to become more stable than ever. I introduce the theoretical concepts of population and regime technical literacy, which reflect the capacity of the population and regime to utilize the Internet and new communication technologies. For the population, higher technical literacy means a demonstrable decrease in transaction costs and thus a greater incidence of collective action. However, higher regime technical literacy gives authoritarians the capacity to monitor their populations and to solve the so-called dictator's information problem' and thus keep their populations more satisfied without needing to liberalize. I introduce an original theory of communications technology and politics building upon the fields of political science and literacy studies. I have formalized the theory with a formal model that extends Acemoglu & Robinson's redistributive model from Economic Origins of Dictatorship and Democracy. I have compiled a new and original data set of measures of technical literacy across all states since the year 2000, and used a Bayesian MCMC approach to construct latent measures of population and regime technical literacy for all country-years. The empirical testing of my theories with this substantial large-n cross-country approach has yielded strong evidence of both the negative relationship between technical literacy and revolution, and the mechanism of partial reform that allows capable dictators to placate the population.

✏Investing in Information Book Summary : This book gathers together, in a new way, established and contemporary thinking about how to get the best out of information technology and information systems investments. Working managers who are beset by the complexities of information management in the age of Big Data and the Social Web, and students who are trying to make sense of information management in a chaotic world that is more and more driven by the Internet, will all benefit from this new treatment of a long-standing and problematic domain. Importantly, the book reveals and clarifies the dependencies that exist between the inner world of information technology and the outer world of people and organisations at work. The book differs from other books in its reflective approach. It avoids lengthy, descriptive, and prescriptive dogma. Rather, it provides tools for thinking about information management and it identifies strategic and tactical options at six levels: from the simple consideration of information technology and information systems, right through to issues of organisational performance and business strategy. At the heart of the matter are two critical and tightly connected issues: the ways that we conceive and manage an organisation’s processes, and the ways that we conceive and manage the information that an organisation needs to sustain those processes. The six-level framework that achieves this clarity is the “Information Management Body of Knowledge” (familiarly known as the “IMBOK”). This easy-to-understand and easy-to-remember framework has been found to be extremely useful in business, in government, in civil society and in education. Throughout the book, selected research papers are identified and summarised. There are also summary chapters from three different operational perspectives: performance and competency assessment using the IMBOK, undertaking research into related issues, and a review of parallel expert thinking. This book stands as a reference point and resource for all those who need to straddle the disparate worlds of “information technology” and “business”. It provides firm pedagogical foundations for courses dealing with business management in the information age, and it provides a sound reference framework for researchers who need to position research projects related to information technology and information systems in a wider context. For busy managers, who simply wish to identify, understand and successfully manage information technology-related opportunities, it provides an ideal arrangement of ideas and tools that will help them.

From a pure research ?eld, intel- gent systems have advanced to the point where their abilities have been incorporated into many business and engineering application areas. KES 2005 provided a valuable mechanism for delegates to obtain an extensive view of the latest research into a range of intelligent-systems algorithms, tools and techniques. The conference also gave de- gates the chance to come into contact with those applying intelligent systems in diverse commercial areas. The combination of theory and practice represented a unique opp- tunity to gain an appreciation of the full spectrum of leading-edge intelligent-systems activity. The papers for KES 2005 were either submitted to invited sessions, chaired and organized by respected experts in their ?elds, or to a general session, managed by an extensive International Program Committee, or to the Intelligent Information Hiding and Multimedia Signal Processing (IIHMSP) Workshop, managed by an International Workshop Technical Committee.
