📒Vanished Kingdoms ✍ Norman Davies
✏Vanished Kingdoms Book Summary : 'The past is a foreign country' has become a truism, yet the past differs from the present in many unfamiliar ways and historical memory is extraordinarily imperfect. The degree to which we think of the European past as the history of France, Germany, Britain, Russia and so on, actually obstructs our view of former reality, and blunts our sensitivity to the ever-changing political landscape. Europe's past is littered with kingdoms, empires and republics which no longer exist but which were some of the most important entities of their day - 'the Empire of Aragon', which dominated the western Mediterranean in the thirteenth century, the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the largest country in Europe for part of the eighteenth century. This book shows the reader how to peer through the cracks of mainstream history-writing, and to catch a glimpse of the 'Five, Six or Seven Kingdoms of Burgundy'. How long will it be before the USSR, until recently one of the world's two superpowers, is wholly or half-forgotten as most of these? The histories of the lost echo across the centuries, mixed in with more familiar sounds. One of the purposes of this book is to help us hear them again more clearly, and appreciate where they came from. As in his earlier celebrated books Europe and The Isles, Norman Davies aims to subvert our established view what looks familiar in history and urges us to look and think again. This stimulating book, full of unexpected stories, observations and connections, gives us a fresh and original perspective on European history.

📒Excellence In Concrete Construction Through Innovation ✍ Mukesh C Limbachiya
✏Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation Book Summary : The concrete industry has embraced innovation and ensured high levels of long-term performance and sustainability through creative applications in design and construction. As a construction material, the versatility of concrete and its intrinsic benefits mean it is still well placed to meet challenges of the construction industry. Indeed, concrete has kept evolving to satisfy ever more stringent, as well as demanding design requirements and calls to improve the performance. This has been achieved through the introduction of new constituent materials, technologies and construction methods. The current challenges faced by concrete construction may not necessarily be the same as those in the future. However, an ongoing programme of innovation and product development means that concrete should continue to provide cost effective sustainable solutions that are able to turn a challenge into an opportunity. This book is a collection of papers presented at the International Conference on Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation (Kingston-upon-Thames, UK, 9–10 September 2008). Excellence in Concrete Construction through Innovation deals with recent innovation in concrete science, technology and practice, and discusses challenges from new materials, technologies, environmental concerns and economic factors in maintaining concrete construction excellence. The book will be of interest to engineers, designers, researchers and scientists.
✏The Foreign Policy Discourse in the United Kingdom and the United States in the New World Order Book Summary : The goal of this book is to examine some of the major foreign policy debates in the United Kingdom and the United States in the period from 1992 to 2008: from the end of the Cold War and the aftermath of the first Gulf War to the 2008 American presidential election. The first President Bush spoke in 1991 of a "new world order" - which seemed to mean an American hegemony. The United States was now the world's only superpower, although a superpower afflicted with weaknesses, especially economic ones. But by 2008 the "new world order" did not seem so new or so strongly American. The period saw the terrorist attacks against the U.S. of 11 September 2001, military problems for the superpower in Afghanistan and Iraq and, by the summer of 2008, near economic collapse. In all of these developments, Britain shared to a lesser or a greater extent. It is hoped that this book will shed an important light both on each nation and on the so-called "special relationship" between the two. Furthermore, this book is also not specifically concerned with policy or how policy is made but with the debate around policy and the rhetoric used to present different points of view. "The 'Special Relationship' between the US and Britain remains an enigmatic, ever-changing, but still very powerful factor in world politics. As an examination of their foreign policy discourses reveals, from the perspective of culture and values, few Western countries are as different as the United Kingdom and the US. With very few exceptions - the foreign policies of Gladstone and Tony Blair, and Chruchillian rhetoric, unmatched by his supremely realpolitical politics - British governments abhor talking about values and ideals. The British cultural peculiarity is to dismiss ideology and values as packaging, only to be caught by surprise time and again that they cannot do "business with Herr Hitler", or that people kill each other for their values, religions, constructed identities and ideologies. Most American governments, by contrast, have had ideological and moral crusades embroidered on their banners in their foreign policy. There is a convergence with Britain when both proclaim that all they are doing is in their self-interest, but the Americans unashamedly assume that what is good for America is good for the world, while the British discourse, with the UK's decline since 1945, rarely goes that far. As an analysis of their discourses reveals, the 'Special Relationship' is thus clearly founded on something either deeper or more superficial than shared culture or values; this volume sheds light on this surprising fact in most illuminating ways, and Lori Maguire's achievement in bringing together these examinations is praiseworthy indeed." 📒Properties Of Concrete ✍ A. M. Neville
✏Properties of Concrete Book Summary : Since its first publication in 1963, Properties of Concrete has been internationally acclaimed as the definitive work of reference on the subject for both the professional and the student engineer. The book has been translated into 12 languages and has sold well over half a million copies. The fifth edition has been updated to reflect advances in concrete technology over the past decade, yet it still retains the original aim of Professor Neville’s book: to provide reliable, comprehensive and practical information on the properties and use of concrete, and the selection of mix proportions all based on scientific observations and the author’s extensive engineering experience. The emphasis throughout is on understanding the behaviour of concrete and relating it to physical and chemical phenomena involved in the performance of the material in service. The overall effect is to give an integrated view of the properties of concrete so as to enable the reader to achieve the best possible construction in concrete. In addition, the scientific basis of the information provided is invaluable in planning research and in the interpretation of test results. new material includes such topics as self-compacting (self-consolidating) concrete, recycled concrete aggregate, thaumasite sulfate attack, compactability test, and delayed ettringite formation. standards, both American (ASTM) and British/European updated to 2010 are used. both SI and American (Imperial) units are used throughout. includes 1500 full references to the world’s literature on concrete and its constituents. an extensive subject index containing over 6000 entries provides excellent ease of reference. a full name index makes it possible to establish the contribution of individual researchers. Adam Neville is a renowned international authority on concrete and author or co-author of nine other books, the latest of which are Neville on Concrete and Concrete: Neville’s Insights and Issues, as well as over 250 research and technical papers. He has very extensive international experience as a consultant and investigator of problems and failures in a variety of structures. In addition to his academic and professional qualifications, he has Honorary Doctorates from the universities of Dundee, St Andrews, Calgary, Sherbrooke (Quebec) and Queen Mary University of London.
