✏Keratoconus Book Summary : As a degenerative disorder of the eye, keratoconus can cause substantial distortion of vision, with multiple images, streaking, and sensitivity to light all reported by patients. Keratoconus: Recent Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment updates ophthalmologists about the innovations that have occurred within the last decade, discussing the diagnostic imaging techniques that have been developed for keratoconus diagnosis, understanding of how examination techniques are related to the evolution of keratoconus, and how to indicate the different therapeutic tools that have been created for keratoconus over the last several years. Additionally, fundamentals for new diagnostic elements, based on the mathematical, physical and biomechanical data are analyzed in depth for a better understanding of the essential diagnostic steps for the clinician to guide patients towards the most adequate therapeutic tool in the case. Modern keratoplasty techniques, assisted by femtosecond lasers or other devices, are also covered and these techniques, along with the emerging conservative treatments, have added to more precise control of the evolution of the disease.

✏Mastery of Holcomb C3 R Crosslinking for Keratoconus Other Disorders For Patients and Physicians Book Summary : Keratoconus is degeneration of the structure of the cornea. The cornea is the clear tissue covering the front of the eye. In keratoconus, the shape of the cornea slowly changes from round to conical (PubMed Health). In the early stages, keratoconus can be corrected with the use of lenses, but in the later stages, surgery is the only option. Holcomb C3-R® is a non-surgical technique that involves placing drops of the vitamin Riboflavin into the eye and using a UV light to activate them. The drops strengthen the fibres of the cornea and over time, preserve sight (American Keratoconus Association). This book is a concise guide to the technique of Holcomb C3-R® to treat keratoconus. Authored by the inventor of the procedure, Brian S Boxer Wachler, the text is based on his first hand clinical experience and explains the history and basic science of cross linking, the development and naming of the technique, its uses and complications, and first patient results. Key points Concise guide to technique of Holcomb C3-R® to treat keratoconus Authored by inventor of the technique and based on clinical experience Includes more than 60 full colour images and illustrations

✏Quick Guide to the Management of Keratoconus Book Summary : This book, designed for ophthalmologists and particularly for refractive surgeons, aims to develop practical and clinical skills in readers so that they are able to make the right decisions in managing keratoconus. There are four main chapters. The first is devoted to diagnosis and describes the clinical signs, the appearances on microscopy, and the significance of corneal hysteresis and corneal topography. Classifications and patterns of keratoconus are then presented, and the author offers his own new classification of topographic patterns. The third chapter addresses the management of the disease in detail. Both non-interventional and interventional approaches are discussed with due attention to contraindications and complications. In addition, a novel classification of management parameters is suggested, and a systematic approach to management, formulated. In the final chapter this approach is applied to nine cases that serve as clinical examples.

✏Irregular Astigmatism Book Summary : Since the advent of keratorefractive surgery and its rising popularity, irregular astigmatism has become an increasingly important issue for ophthalmologists and optometrists. Despite the success of LASIK and PRK, there are more and more patients experiencing visual quality problems due to the non-physiological modification of the corneal structure. Among these complications, irregular astigmatism is perhaps the most difficult to treat. Every physician who performs keratorefractive surgery understands that in reducing a patient.s refractive error, there is a possibility of creating irreversible effects on visual quality. This text is intended to help prevent and reduce the iatrogenic creation of irregular astigmatism, as well as provide effective treatment when postoperative complications do arise. With the maturation of keratorefractive technology in recent years, effective treatment for iatrogenic irregular astigmatism is quickly developing. It provides everything refractive surgeons, ophthalmologists, and optometrists need to know about this important topic.

✏Cross linking in Children with Keratoconus a Systematic Review and Meta analysis Book Summary : Abstract: Keratoconus can behave more aggressively in pediatric than in adult patients. We systematically reviewed the literature to determine the effectiveness of corneal collagen cross‐linking (CXL) in children. For this study, MEDLINE ® and Cochrane databases were searched for all studies examining the effects of standard, trans‐epithelial or accelerated CXL protocols in patients age 18years or younger. Primary outcomes were; uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and maximum keratometry (Kmax) and secondary outcomes were; best‐corrected visual acuity (BCVA), mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE), central corneal thickness (CCT) and endothelial cell density (ECD). Standardized mean differences (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals were calculated, comparing baseline values with those at 6, 12 and 24months. A total of 13 papers, published between May 2011 and December 2014 examining 490 eyes of 401 patients with a mean age of 15.25 (±1.5) years, were included in the qualitative analysis in this review. Nine papers were included in the meta‐analysis, showing significant improvement in UCVA and BCVA and stable Kmax at 12months, and stable UCVA, improved BCVA and improved Kmax at 24months in the standard protocol group UCVA, BCVA and KMax were stable at 12months in the trans‐epithelial group. Mean refractive spherical equivalent (MRSE), CCT and ECD remained stable in both groups. In conclusion it was found that standard CXL may be effective in halting progression of keratoconus in pediatric patients at 1year. However, larger, more long‐term studies are required to ascertain its effectiveness.

✏Keratoconus Book Summary : Keratoconus is a condition in which the cornea assumes a conical shape due to thinning and protrusion. The condition is usually bilateral and asymmetric. Refractive error will constantly change and as it progresses it impairs vision. Patients will have symptoms of visual blur, distortion, glare, photophobia, ocular irritation, pain, red eyes, tearing and monocular diplopia (also known as ghost images). Irregular scissor motion on retiniscopy reflex, abnormal ophthalmoscopy reflex, egg-shape mires on keratometry, Vogt's striae, Fleisher ring, Munson sign and hydrops are the characteristic signs of keratoconus. The etiology is unknown. Atopic diseases, wearing hard contact lenses and heredity have been mentioned as the cause. Among the management options are spectacle correction, soft contact lenses, hard contact lenses, combinations of soft-hard contact lenses, and as last option, surgical procedures. Management depends on the severity and the classification of the cone.

✏Phenomenology and Treatment of Psychophysiological Disorders Book Summary : The interrelationships between somatic and psychiatric complaints involve virtually every major organ system and every psychiatric diagnostic category. Psychiatric distress frequently finds expression in physical ailment or pain, and chronic physical illness or disability is a common exacerbant of psychiatric symptoms. The complexity of the interplay between psychological and physiological disease is profound, and many of the mechanisms involved remain undefined or imperfectly understood. Our intention in assembling this volume, the fifth in the Baylor Psychiatry Series, has been to consolidate the most recent medical and psychiatric opinion on the description and treatment of psychophysiological disorders. We have included reviews and new material on disorders long understood to be in the psychophysiological realm, such as gastrointestinal disease, pulmonary reactions, headache, and hypertension. Additionally, there are contributions on conditions less frequently, but no less clearly, recognized as psychophysiological or psychosomatic, including immune response deficits, epilepsy, stuttering, and sleep disorders. Chapters on Couvade syndrome, menstrually related mood disturbance, obesity, keratoconus, and anorexia nervosa examine the degree to which psychological and physical events interact in conditions usually considered attributable essentially to a single system. Drs. Dowling and Gaitz have written excellent reviews of developmental elements in psychophysiological events, and examine such disorders as they are specific to the very young or the very old. Treatment approaches to the variety of disorders are discussed in chapters by Dr. Decker, who describes multifaceted modalities, Dr. Lomax, who examines psychotherapeutic techniques, and in a final chapter on psychopharmacological mitigation of psychophysiological syndromes.
