✏Inspectors General Book Summary : In 1978, determined to combat fraud, waste, and abuse in government programs, Congress overwhelmingly approved the creation of special Offices of Inspectors-General (OIGs) in many federal departments. Moore and Gates here provide the first evaluation of this important institutional innovation. Clearly and objectively, they examine the powerful but often imprecisely defined concepts—wastefulness, accountability, performance—that underlie the OIG mandate. Their study conveys a realistic sense of how these offices operate and how their impact is affected by the changing dynamics of politics and personality. ✏Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs Book Summary : The former Uncle Tupelo and current Son Volt musician presents snapshots of the people and places he encountered during his decades-long touring career. In this collection of beautifully crafted autobiographical vignettes, Jay Farrar visits the places he’s journeyed to during his more than twenty years as a traveling musician. While recollections of Farrar’s parents and his formative childhood in the Missouri Ozarks are prominent throughout the stories, it is music and musicians that are given the most space and the final word, since music has been his creative impetus and driving force. In writing these stories, Farrar found a natural inclination to focus on very specific experiences; a method analogous to the songwriting process. The highlights and pivotal experiences from that musical journey are all represented as the binding thread in these stories, illustrated throughout with photography from his life. If life is a movie, then these stories are the still frames. “Falling Cars and Junkyard Dogs extends Farrar’s talents as he exhibits an eye for detail and a grasp of the human condition that proceeds directly from his own introspective nature.” —All About Jazz “Provides some illumination of the creative mind of a very private artist.” —Kirkus Reviews

✏Junkyard Dogs Book Summary : This book deals with the critical need to continue embryonic stem-cell research. It attempts to debunk the sacred cow of "pro-life." The plot is fairly simple: a group of people who would benefit from embryonic stem-cell research inflict bodily harm to two high-ranking members of the pro-life movement so they must experience what life is like from their perspectives. The group first attacks the men by trying to damage their kidneys. When that doesn't work, they take more drastic action. Along the way, readers are introduced to some interesting characters. Dick is a Vietnam veteran, an excellent marksman, and a male chauvinist pig. Gabriella's love of food makes her creations into an art form. Sue and Tom form a romantic relationship through their mutual love of swimming. Other members of the pro-embryonic stem cell research movement include Monty, one of the richest men in the world whose wife died of Alzheimer's; Bill, a security expert whose wife died of MS; and Bob, a doctor whose best friend died of ALS.

The hilarious and suspenseful sixth book in the Longmire series from The New York Times bestselling author of Hell Is Empty and As the Crow Flies finds our sheriff up to his badge in the darker aspects of human nature, making his way through the case with a combination of love, laughs, and derelict automobiles. From Publishers Weekly Johnson's sixth mystery featuring Wyoming sheriff Walt Longmire (after 2009's Dark Horse) will remind readers that a big city isn't necessary for a compelling crime story and enduring hero. One blizzardy February day, Walt and his deputies—Victoria Moretti and Santiago Saizarbitoria—visit the Durant, Wyo., dump, owned by the Stewart family, to investigate a severed thumb found in a discarded cooler. There they discover that the Stewart family patriarch, George, was almost killed after someone dragged him behind a '68 Toronado. Walt winds up playing peacemaker between the cantankerous Stewarts, longtime Durant residents, and the owner of a new housing development bordering the junkyard. When a search of the dump unearths a surprising side business and two deaths follow, Walt realizes he has bigger problems on his hands. Series fans as well as newcomers will cheer the laconic Walt every step of the way. 8-city author tour. (June) Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. From Booklist Starred Review After a severed thumb turns up at the dump outside of Durant, Wyoming, Sheriff Walt Longmire ignores the fact that someone has claimed it. He needs a mystery to keep Deputy Santiago Saizarbitoria, who’s suffering from “bullet fever,” on the job until he can think of a way to keep him from quitting. It’s just that sort of kindness that defines Longmire, whose unwillingness to assume the worst leads to him getting pepper-sprayed, bit in the ass, and very nearly shot. Like any good mystery, this depends less on the plot than its depiction of interesting people in an interesting place. But, as the story ambles along, with Walt taking a lot of ragging from the people who work for him (including ex–Philly cop and love interest Victoria Moretti), the severed thumb points the way through a surprisingly twisty mystery that involves junkmen, land developers, and a creepy ex-convict. And, as he proved in last year’s terrific Dark Horse, Johnson—a born storyteller if ever there was one—can do one hell of a set piece in a snowstorm (even with a limping, overweight sheriff). Longmire may be contemplating early retirement, but readers will demand that he serve out his full term of service—and run for reelection. --Keir Graff

✏A Baby Boomer s Story Book Summary : This book is about an era in our country when American children received more freedom than any other time in American history. After the Vietnam War ended, some American Baby Boomers totally abused this freedom. This book contains many stories about some of those Baby Boomers who were taking full advantage of these times, with no regret or regard of the consequences. Many of the stories you will read about are unethical, immoral, and sometimes disturbing. This book is about a Baby Boomers life, and many of the unique people and events which occurred through these times. You will also read about certain subjects such as sex, drugs, and rock and roll, which were the trademarks of that era. The Baby Boomers not only broke all the rules which took generations to establish: They set new trends and guidelines for many generations to come. They also created a whole new way of life for the American child. Originally from the suburbs of Detroit Michigan, Gary Dixon managed to escape the magnetism of the big city life. He now calls Clearwater Florida his home. From a family of nine children, his family could definitely be considered a Baby Boomer family. With the Baby Boom era in full force, there were not too many places in America to elude the temptations of recreational drug use, and the casual sex scene. Since the Baby Boomers created this new kind of lifestyle, almost every young person in America became a part of it. Gary Dixon and many of his friends not only became a part it, they took it to a whole new level. Living through this era, his life became very unique and eccentric, and he developed many stories along the way. He would like to share these stories with anyone interested, or any other Baby Boomers who grew up through these times.

✏Chez Dogs Book Summary : Unreeling time in Remembering Dogs, I ask the kind reader to join me in reminiscence with love and affection mutts, mongrels, the high bred that filled our lives with the purest joy. Perhaps, the title should read more explicitly as Remembering Dogs In and About a Restaurant, a landmark restaurant my parents owned in Coney Island during its hey-day, and decline. It had a dual reputation, as a restaurant with a solid cucina and, the site of a prominent kennel which housed on average forty to fifty dogs of various breeds. My father was the foremost fancier of the Boston Terrier in the USA, he had no prejudices against any other breed, he loved them all. There were times when I thought his sporting life as a fancier of the Boston Terrier, the American Breed, was a tip of the hat tribute to the country that gave a 16 year old immigrant warmth and a place. Many a day he preferred the company of the dogs in his kennel than the company of his dining patrons. You, the reader, are eager to tell me tales about your dog. I shall temper your impetuosity, and mine, by a passing salute to the restaurant dog.

Written in the pages of this book is an astounding little prayer that can dramatically change your life. Its words do not merely offer knowledge but, more important, are expressions of truths that have the ability to bring complete and lasting spiritual transformation. Many people today will never reach their full potential or become the person they sense is hidden inside, good people who desire to grow in love beyond their frustrations and weaknesses. They long for purpose, meaning, and fulfillment—to live a life of love—but have difficulty in finding it. I know how they feel. Through much adversity and with the help of God, this is what I’ve found. For all my struggle and disappointment, the answers to life’s most difficult situations are usually simple. In fact, God is a God of simplicity. We are often the ones who make life difficult for ourselves. In fact, the answers to life’s most difficult problems are usually simple. Jesus summed up the secret to life in a very uncomplicated, profound statement: Love God and love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus said that doing this fulfills all of God’s requirements of us. That’s where “The Prayer of Love” comes in. Whether you know how to love or you feel that love has eluded you, this prayer will change your life. This is because love is not meant to be an occasional feeling but a daily experience that continually brings peace and joy. “The Prayer of Love” is a little-known yet powerful prayer that the Apostle Paul prayed over the church he founded in Philippi in what is now Greece. The Prayer of Love follows the outline of this fifty-nine-word prayer and is broken down into seven parts that form benchmarks for understanding and maturing in love. The Prayer of Love is a small book with a simple prayer and a memorable, easy-to-follow method for developing the capacity to allow peace and love to rule in our lives every day.
