✏Intraoperative Neurophysiologic Monitoring Book Summary : Intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring has shown a steady increase in use for surgeries in which neural structures may be at risk of injury. Some of the surgical techniques used carry inherent risks, and these risks have changed the way in which neurophysiologic monitoring has impacted patient safety and quality of care during surgical procedures. It is therefore crucial that those performing and interpreting intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring are adequately trained. This book is a comprehensive guide to the current practice of intraoperative neurophysiology with chapters on various modalities and clinical uses. Separate chapters devoted to anesthesia, operating room environment, special considerations in pediatrics and the interpretation and reporting of neurophysiologic data are useful and complementary. Questions and detailed answers on the topics covered can be found on the accompanying website for study review. This book will be useful to the trainee as well as the neurophysiologist already in practice.

✏The Audiologist s Handbook of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring Book Summary : The Audiologist's Handbook of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring is a comprehensive and practical guide on cranial nerve intraoperative monitoring for audiology students and audiologists. The author shares his expertise gained from years of experience in the operating room with other audiologists and health care providers. The handbook was written with the student, fellow and relatively novice monitoring clinician in mind. However, individuals beyond a beginner level can also benefit from this book, which is illustrated with cases and appropriate figures to guide the learning and reviewing of intraoperative monitoring applications. The topics will also be of assistance and interest to other health care providers seeking information about intraoperative monitoring--specifically training IOM technologists and otolaryngology or neurosurgery residents and fellows. The initial chapters of the handbook introduce the reader to basic tenants of electromyography, evoked potential recording, and neuroanatomy. The following chapters detail intraoperative monitoring for seven different surgical procedures most commonly encountered by audiologists. The last two chapters focus on considerations for establishing a neuromonitoring program, including five specific protocols that could be used step-by-step in the operating room to set up and conduct neuromonitoring for a surgical procedure. In addition to this comprehensive review of intraoperative monitoring, readers will benefit from the videos illustrating neurophysiological events occurring during surgical procedures.

✏Functional Surgery of Cerebellopontine Angle by Minimally Invasive Retrosigmoid Approach Book Summary : The cerebellum is the area at the back of the brain that controls motor movement coordination, balance, equilibrium and muscle tone. The pons connects the cerebral cortex (responsible for thinking perceiving, producing and understanding language) with the medulla oblongata (controls autonomic functions such as breathing, digestion, heart and blood vessel function, swallowing and sneezing). It also serves as a communications centre between the two hemispheres of the brain. The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is the anatomical space at the junction of the cerebellum and the pons and is a frequent site of benign tumour formation and other non life-threatening, functional disorders. (About.com). This manual is a comprehensive guide to functional surgery of the CPA using the minimally invasive retrosigmoid technique, which involves making a small incision behind the ear, providing endoscopic access to the cerebellum and brain stem. Beginning with the surgical anatomy of CPA and in depth discussion on the instruments and set up for the procedure, the following sections cover the pathophysiology, radiological characteristics, neurological presentation, diagnosis and treatment of a wide spectrum of CPA lesions. Written by internationally recognised experts from France, India and Japan, this highly illustrated resource includes 550 full colour clinical photographs, diagrams and tables, as well as extensive references. ✏A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring Book Summary : Covering both the applications and the related theory, A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring provides a general but comprehensive introduction to IOM. Unlike existing texts that typically report the results of specific studies, this book presents comprehensive coverage of the entire procedure, as well as the specific protocols used in hospital practice, examples of typical recordings, possible problems, and recommended solutions. At the end of each chapter the author poses several questions for review. These questions help technologists and medical residents in their preparation for the board exams. Taken together, these features make the book an ideal reference or training manual. A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring begins by discussing the basic principles underlying the generation of bioelectrical signals. It then describes the electronic equipment and the various electrophysiological procedures involved in IOM. From this foundation, the book gradually advances to more specific topics, such as surgical procedures, neuronal structures at risk, the optimum combinations of tests to administer, and the proper interpretation of test results. The material also provides you with a background on general anesthesia and analyzes the effects of various drugs on electrophysiological recordings. A Concise Guide to Intraoperative Monitoring also discusses the proper placement of stimulation and recording electrodes, as well as intervention strategies and equipment troubleshooting.

✏Neural Monitoring Book Summary : The symposium from which this book originates represents a sig nificant watershed in the field of intraoperative neural monitoring, since the participants concluded that electrophysiologic monitoring techniques should be considered a "standard of care" for surgical pro cedures that place the central nervous system (CNS) at risk for injury. Specifically, it was agreed that the somatosensory-evoked potential (SEP) is a remarkably reliable and sensitive indicator of several aspects of CNS function, and should be routinely employed as an intraopera tive monitor during many neurosurgical and orthopedic procedures. The significance of this conclusion cannot be overstated, for at the time of this writing, intraoperative monitoring methods based on evoked-potential analyses are still considered experimental and are not in routine use. The reasons for this are not clear, given the accu mulation of literature and expertise on this subject over the past five years. Granted, the cost of electrophysiological monitoring equip ment is high, but only initially. The benefits of injury prevention far outweigh these costs, from both medical and economic viewpoints. It is our sincere hope and goal that the medical community be made aware of the value of intraoperative neural monitoring.
