Abstract: Solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), owing to its high operating temperatures, have many advantages over other types of fuel cells. Its commercialization, however, relies greatly on its costs and long term durability. By reducing the operating temperature to the intermediate temperature range, the costs for the balance of plant would be significantly reduced. The greatest contribution to cell over-potential at this temperature range is the oxygen reduction at cathode; hence development of a cathode material with low specific resistance and durability would have direct impact on the commercialization of SOFC. Composite cathode is a common strategy used by many to improve cathode performance. This was done conventionally by random mixing of cathode material with a better ionic conductor such as the electrolyte material. Impregnation or infiltration is often used to improve interconnectivity among individual phases in the composite, In this study, fabrication of a composite cathode with two phases - gadolinium doped ceria (GDC) and platinum attempted, forming two inter-locked networks each with a channel dimension in the nanometer range by hard templating and chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) both for the first time to the best of my knowledge. It was found that surface layer of these materials play a very important role in the performance and structural stability. Another set of composite cathode was fabricated by packing commercially available GDC with carbon pore-former following by impregnation with Pt/Ag-Pt alloy. By introducing small amount of silver (6wt%), area specific resistance of 0.94cm2 and 0.16cm2 were observed at 550C and 660C, respectively during impedance spectroscopy in symmetrical cell arrangement. Silver was proposed to provide greater effective surface area for surface exchange and extending the triple phase boundary. Platinum was also suggested to provide a surface where silver wetting is possible stabilizing morphology of silver in the GDC scaffold. Platinum is not a practical choice of electrode material due to its costs and lower performance, it was chosen to demonstrate the strategy of vapor phase infiltration in fabricating SOFC composite cathode. Inside the energy system, the methane in the biogas is mixed with steam, and then it is converted into carbon monoxide, hydrogen and carbon dioxide through steam reforming and water gas shift chemical reactions in an indirect internal reformer (IIR) mostly and in the SOFC anode minimally. The chemical energy of the electro‐oxidation of hydrogen and carbon monoxide produced is directly converted into electric energy in the fuel cell anode. A part of the anode exhaust gas can be recirculated at the IIR inlet and the percentage of this recirculated anode exhaust gas together to the fuel utilization factor influence the performances (electric and thermal powers and efficiencies, primary energy saving and first law efficiency) of the SOFC system in a cogenerative arrangement. Through the simulation model of an IT‐SOFC system fed by biogas in cogenerative arrangement, which was formulated ad hoc and implemented in a Matlab environment, the influence of the above‐mentioned variables on the IT‐SOFC system performances was evaluated. The verification of carbon formation at the anode was made. Abstract : Intermediate Temperature IIR‐Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (IT IIR‐SOFC) fed by biogas is modeled. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. Abstract : Anode-supported solid oxide fuel cells with the configuration of the La0.2 Sr0.25 Ca0.45 TiO3 (LSCTA− ) anode, YSZ electrolyte and La0.8 Sr0.2 Co0.2 Fe0.8 O3 (LSCF)–YSZ cathode were fabricated using tape casting and co-sintering techniques followed by pre-reduction and impregnation. In order to improve the performance, the active anodes were prepared via the wet impregnation of metallic catalysts (Ni or Ni–Fe solution). The impregnation of 3 wt% nickel significantly improved the fuel cell performance from 43 mW cm −2 for the bare LSCTA− anode to 112 mW cm −2 for the Ni–LSCTA− anode at 700 °C in humidified hydrogen containing 3 vol% H2 O. More interestingly, the substitution of 25 wt% Fe to Ni further enhances the power density by a factor of 1.5, compared to the Ni-impregnated cell. The cell infiltrated with Ni–Fe solid solution shows a slower degradation than the other two cells after the first 20 h period. High-resolution back-scattered electron (BSE) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images performed on the cross section of the impregnated anodes with time after ion beam preparation show that the sintering of the catalyst particles on the scaffold surface and the interaction between backbone and catalyst are the predominant contributions for the degradation of cell performance.

✏Performances of YBaCo1 4Cu0 6O5 u2013 Ce0 8Sm0 2O1 9 Composite Cathodes for Intermediate temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells Book Summary : In this paper, the electrochemical properties of YBaCo1.4Cu0.6O5+?–xCe0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (YBCC–xSDC, x=20, 30, 40, 50 wt%) have been investigated for the potential application in intermediate-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs). No chemical reactions between YBCC cathode and SDC electrolyte, and YBCC and La0.9Sr0.1Ga0.8Mg0.2O3-? (LSGM) occur. The thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of YBCC cathode decreases with SDC addition. The TEC of YBCC–30SDC cathode is 13.60×10–6 K-1 from 30 to 850 °C in air and it exhibits the best electrochemical performance among the YBCC–xSDC cathodes. The polarization resistance (Rp) of YBCC–30SDC is 0.027 ? cm2 at 850 °C, 0.044 ? cm2 at 800 °C and 0.075 ? cm2 at 750 °C. The maximum power density value of electrolyte-based cell with YBCC–30SDC cathode is 662, 483 and 319 mW cm-2 at 850, 800 and 750 °C, respectively. Finally, preliminary results indicate that YBCC–30SDC is especially promising as a cathode for IT-SOFCs.

✏Chromium Evaporation of Metallic Component Materials in Solid Oxide Fuel Cell sofc Book Summary : Recent developments of planar intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFCs) make metallic alloys attractive candidates as interconnects as well as balance of plant (BoP) materials at operating temperatures below 900 oC. The resistance of alloys against oxidation and corrosion is one of the critical criteria for selecting candidate alloys for SOFC applications. The oxidation and corrosion resistance of the alloys service at high temperature depends on the formation of a protective oxide scale (chromia. silica, alumina). Among these, chromia forming alloys are often used in SOFCs. At higher temperature, the evaporation of chromium containing species from chromia in humid air limits the applications of chromia forming alloys. SOFCs are susceptible to chromium evaporation (known as chromium poisoning) as it can lead to severe degradation of SOFC performance. In this study, the transpiration method was used to measure the chromium evaporation rates from chromium evaporation of chromia and alumina forming nickel and iron base alloys. The effects of the temperature and water vapor content on the chromium evaporation rates were also investigated. The measured chromium evaporation rates were used to predict the degradation rates of the SOFCs under those conditions. The oxidation behavior of candidate alloys in air with different water vapor contents was studied. The effects of the temperature and water vapor content on physicochemical characteristics of the oxide scales formed on the surface of metallic components were also examined.

✏Three Dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics Modeling of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Using Different Fuels Book Summary : "Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology has been of great interest over many years due to its flexibility in using different fuels for operation; including the fundamental fuel i.e. Hydrogen. Various computational and numerical models have been developed along with experimental work to evaluate the performance as well as to identify and overcome the problems faced in the development of SOFC's. In an attempt to achieve efficient operation with respect to design and combined thermal and electrochemical perspective, the main objective of the proposed study is to present a three-dimensional computational model, which will serve as a framework for the analysis and optimization of SOFC's. A three-dimensional model of a tubular SOFC was developed to study the effect of temperature and electrolyte thickness variations on its performance. A commercial Computational Fluid dynamics (CFD) software ANSYS FLUENT 12.0 was used for the development of the model which incorporates an interactive 3-D electro-thermo-chemical fluid flow analysis. The particular model, after validation against experimental observations for selected benchmark cases, was demonstrated to be compatible for intermediate temperature operations using hydrogen as fuel. The performance of the model was analyzed by varying electrolyte thicknesses from 2-100 [mu]m. The same model was further evaluated using different fuels such as CH4 (methane) and CO (carbon monoxide), including the modeling of the reformation and the water-gas shift reactions.
