✏Diet and Exercise in Cognitive Function and Neurological Diseases Book Summary : Diet and exercise have long been recognized as important components of a healthy lifestyle, as they have a great impact on improving cardiovascular and cerebrovascular functions, lowering the risk of metabolic disorders, and contributing to healthy aging. As a greater proportion of the world’s population is living longer, there has been increased interest in understanding the role of nutrition and exercise in long-term neurological health and cognitive function. Diet and Exercise in Cognitive Function and Neurological Diseases discusses the role and impact that nutrition and activity have on cognitive function and neurological health. The book is divided into two sections. The first section focuses on diet and its impact on neurobiological processes. Chapters focus on the impacts of specific diets, such as the Mediterranean, ketogenic and vegan diets, as well as the role of specific nutrients, fats, fatty acids, and calorie restriction on neurological health and cognitive function. The second section of the book focuses on exercise, and its role in maintaining cognitive function, reducing neuroinflammatory responses, regulating adult neurogenesis, and healthy brain aging. Other chapters look at the impact of exercise in the management of specific neurological disorders such Multiple Sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease. Diet and Exercise in Cognitive Function and Neurological Diseases is a timely reference on the neurobiological interplay between diet and exercise on long-term brain health and cognitive function.

✏High Calorie Diet and the Human Brain Book Summary : The purpose of this monograph is to present readers with a comprehensive and cutting edge description of neurochemical effects of diet (beneficial and harmful effects) in normal human brain and to discuss how present day diet promotes pathogenesis of stroke, AD, PD, and depression in a manner that is useful not only to students and teachers but also to researchers, dietitians, nutritionists and physicians. A diet in sufficient amount and appropriate macronutrients is essential for optimal health of human body tissues. In brain, over-nutrition, particularly with high-calorie diet, not only alters cellular homeostasis, but also results in changes in the intensity of signal transduction processes in reward centers of the brain resulting in food addiction. Over-nutrition produces detrimental effects on human health in general and brain health in particular because it chronically increases the systemic and brain inflammation and oxidative stress along with induction of insulin resistance and leptin resistance in the brain as well as visceral organs. Onset of chronic inflammation and oxidative stress not only leads to obesity and heart disease, but also promotes type II diabetes and metabolic syndrome, which are risk factors for both acute neural trauma (stroke) and chronic age-related neurodegenerative and neuropsychological disorders, such as Alzheimer disease (AD), Parkinson disease (PD) and depression.

✏Effect of 12 Weeks Structured Exercise Training on Insulin Resistance in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus a Pre post Study Book Summary : Title: Effect of 12 weeks structured exercise training on Insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus: A Pre-Post studyAbstract:Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is one of fastest growing noncommunicable diseases worldwide, and its prevalence is increasing rapidly around the world parallel to increase in the obesity. According to International Diabetes Federation atlas (7th edition), 415 million adults worldwide have diabetes mellitus, and it is projected to increase to 642 million by the year 2040. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is characterized by elevated glucose levels in circulating blood, caused by impairment in glucose tolerance development of insulin resistance & relative insulin deficiency. Impaired glucose control & Insulin resistance are reported to be a risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases. Insulin resistance is commonly associated with visceral adiposity, glucose intolerance, hypertension, dyslipidemia, endothelial dysfunction and elevated markers of inflammation. In Indian population, Insulin resistance is one of the strong reason for altered glycemic control, even though exercise training is found to be effective in glycemic control along with the standard medical care. There is a dearth of literature in the effectiveness of exercise training on insulin resistance in type 2 diabetes mellitus.Aim: u2022tTo find out the effectiveness of structured exercise program on insulin resistance by using Fasting insulin level and Homa-IR in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.u2022tTo find out the effectiveness of structured exercise program on Glycaemic control by a HbA1c method in Type 2 diabetes mellitus.Method: We conducted a pre-and- post study with no control group. A total of 17 participants were included aged 30-75 years who are with Type 2 diabetes mellitus on oral hypoglycemic agent with or without Insulin therapy and Exclusion criteria was participants with type 1 diabetes mellitus, known case of Respiratory disease, Coronary artery disease, Neurological disorders, Musculoskeletal problems that would interfere with the exercise training . All participants were screened at Diabetic Foot clinic, Department of Physiotherapy, Manipal University, Karnataka, India. All participants were screened clinically & biochemically and given a set of structured exercise program 3 times a week for 12 weeks along with standard medical care. The exercise protocol included warm-up by stretching and flexibility exercises for 10 min. It mainly consisted of aerobic and resistance exercise like-brisk walking for 45 mins, jogging, weights for upper and lower body major muscle groups with maximum intensity 60% increase in heart rate and then stretching in the seated position for 10 min.The baseline data was collected before the intervention and progression of exercise program done after 6 weeks. At 3rd month all the participants were reassessed for fasting insulin level and fasting blood sugar. Resistance to insulin was assessed using Homeostasis Model Assessment of Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR), Fasting insulin level and Fasting blood sugar. Results: The mean age of the participants was 59.23 u00b1 8.38 years, mean duration of diabetes was 10.82 u00b1 7.82 years, mean Body mass index was 26.64 u00b1 4.09. Significant differences have been observed in Insulin resistance, Fasting blood sugar. The current exercise protocol has been effective in lowering fasting glucose (p =0.005), Fasting insulin (p = 0.000) and insulin resistance (p = 0.005). Discussion: There is now suggestive evidence supporting the use of 12 weeks of structured exercise program training three times a week was effective on insulin resistance and glycemic control in T2DM patients. Several factors could affect the exercise outcome on glucose and insulin plasma levels and insulin resistance in T2DM. ✏Chronic Medical Disease and Cognitive Aging Book Summary : Chronic Medical Disease and Cognitive Aging: Toward a Healthy Body and Brain explores the important and often overlooked connection between how chronic medical diseases of the body can affect cognitive function and brain health. As population demographics shift to that of an aging population it has become more important to understand and improve cognitive function in late life. Chronic medical diseases often increase the risk of cognitive impairment, and those with cognitive impairment may be less able to effectively manage their medical conditions, suggesting a reciprocal relationship may exist where medical disease impacts cognition that in turn may exacerbate physical health. Chronic Medical Disease and Cognitive Aging discusses current research on the association between a variety of chronic medical diseases and cognition and, where appropriate, promising interventions or accepted treatment strategies. While a cure for many diseases continues to be elusive, insights garnered from the interplay between diseases of the body and mind may help point the way to novel therapeutic strategies to improve cognitive function in late life.
